How soon after first picking a bass up did you gig?
BassTractor replied to bobpalt's topic in General Discussion
Hm. Depends on how you look at it. See, a buddy of mine bought a bass, and I had some joy with it without "picking up bass" or practising, even though I admittedly did "pick up a bass". This was in '81-'82. I never learnt to play bass, but did find out how to play "Games Without Frontiers", and taught it to another buddy so as to get him to start playing an instrument. Mind you, this was just about where to put one's fingers. No technique or stuff. Some years later ('85?) I had to pick up the bass without being able to play the bass, when, as an accomplished musician in other areas, I was asked to dep the very next day. So I did. You choose: one day or three/four years. BTW, roughly thirty years later, I still can't play the bass, and I'm still not practising as I should. But noise is emitted from the thing, and I enjoy myself. best, bert -
Hey Terry, Welcome to the delurk side! I hope you've not made a mistake there. Lurking for ages, eh? You Catweazle? (Or are you too young to miss the link here?) Enjoy your new status! best, bert

Welcome, young whippersnapper (no ill intentions - just love that word), I hope you find what you're looking for here. Should be able to. You sound very dedicated. That's good. Don't you forget to live now. Living is also good. Enjoy the Bass, enjoy the Chat. best, bert -
Yeah! G'day, mate! Welcome, Marty. Hope you like the tone here, and the tones for that matter. I've never been in Napier, but if it helps, I've been in a Napier, and was allowed to drive her (carefully) for quite some ride. Something else than a Tudor, I can tell you. Anyway, enjoy the site! best, bert

. Aw! Luverly! I dig that type of refined esthetics. IMHO. And this one again shows what blue and brown can be together. Complex, but bjoootiful. Thinking about this: so now you have a rosewood AND maple neck, you can change the sound from warm and fuzzy to harsh and shrill by just moving your left finger slightly. Man, you own a synthesizer! b, b -
Love them, have recently offloaded a Ray 5 as I wanted a P-Bass more but they are excellent basses, I'd like to pick up a 4 in the future.
Funny how we're different, eh? My new Ray 5 has made me doubt all my four-stringers, including the Bongos with the 4-band EQ that I love so much.
i guess so mate, i just copied one of the online things
Hahaha! The online thing! Never even crossed my mind. Yeah, I guess some knowledge can be found there. Thanks for telling! Inspiring story. b, b -
litereally heated up each fret with a soldering iron then pulled them out with nail clippers works a treat... the photos will be up very shortly
Wow! Sounds great, that. Is the point to augment volume and push away the wood so the frets get looser when cold again? Or am I on a different planet here? b, b -

Aw, no! This will only result in neck sink ... er ... dive. But how did you take out the frets? I always read it's very risky (not that that would stop me, mind). b, b -

Fourteen. Fourteen is exactly how good they are. Oh, and congrats with the new toys! I can't even imagine how you managed to defret one the very same day it arrived. Kudos! Oh, and "fourteen" is the number of exclamation marks in your title. best. bert -
If it's The Jean Genie you mean, I seem to remember there are some (chromatic) slides there? They may originally have played with the button on a chromatic one, though I can't quite remember the technique one uses. At any rate, I feel a chromatic one is the safest bet here, unless you find out all the details of the part first. best, bert
if a band or individual thinks less of you because of the axe you play then they are arses
Yup. The point then becomes how we deal with it. A buddy and neigbour of mine taught me how. Uninterestedly, low-voiced and calmly, he'd just say: "So dumb you are..." Much better than getting in stitches over it. best, bert
Is it fixed? No!
Sorry for not being clearer. I just meant I had fixed your 'transformer' text. I did that just in case anyone could get confused. Point being you needed a step down to 110V, not a step up to 230V. best, bert

Hey - Occasional Bass player trying to get more serious
BassTractor replied to HelloStratosphere's topic in Introductions
Hello HS, Welcome! I'm sure you'll do OK here, especially if you have lots of drummer jokes in stock - as in about drummers. We're a bit overfed on sax player jokes. I'm sure someone will tell you more about the Redwood. If not, ask again on the Bass Guitar forum in the Gear section. Not everyone reads the introductions, I gather. Enjoy the banter and the info! best, bert
