Short scale for less than £200! Perfect for little hands!
BassTractor replied to MiltyG565's topic in Bass Guitars
Just so it's mentioned: the GSRM from Thomann is just £152.72. Still less than 200, I admit. best, bert -
Please help out bass legend Joe Osborn!
/rant
Calm down, man! Did you never even understand it's really for helping out poor bass legend Joe Osborn? OMfG, doesn't anybody read thread titles anymore? best, bert -
Hi Barry, Welcome to BC! ...and an extra welcome coz you mastered the incredibly difficult task of correctly calling them "pedals" and not "foot pedals". Nice list of basses too. How's that Rimini? Awrite I suppose, since you bought it? Anyway, share some wisdom and enjoy the banter. best, bert

If this is gonna be an ultimate band, it can't have me on bass, so I'll bend the rules a trifle. Also, since I got some power here, the ultimate band will be playing my music. For that, I need: vocals: Peter Hammill guitars: Robert Fripp and Steve Howe bass pedals and other keyboards - me drums: Pip Pyle If a bass guitar is granted in addition, then Ray Shulman should play it. Old fashioned, yes. I'm old. best, bert
But the whole special way they are wound around a nonagonal core with specialist metals that were tempered in the fires of Mordor seems legit enough and should coax anyone to give em a try. :-P
Class!

Great thread ... er ... really great thread, but be careful: one too many threads like these, and we'll start assuming you have a brain. Here's my take on some of this - a noob's take, but then you still haven't been granted with a better answer and it's now ... what? four hours later or so? (I'm not sure how they do the timing stuff with different time zones) 1) Windings augment mass. More mass means more change in the magnetic field. 2) My guess is that different correlations make for different overtone spectra. 3) My guess is the structural support is near zero or negative, since quite some windings "bite" into the core. 6) In my book, action is a byproduct. The real issue should be compliance, as the lack of it at the ends (bridge and nut) should mean that the intonation is wrong on most of the fretboard. I'll be very happy to get corrected on this if needed. best, bert

Great plan. Everything to stimulate the youngsters. Personally, I'd keep it though, and buy the youngster another one - for borrowing or owning, depending. best, bert

I'm not totally sure, but I think that somewhere on BC, it was said that any Orange product with the word "crush" in its name is to be avoided. You could try a search. I need some sleep now, so I'll leave it to you. best, bert

Assuming that you want a budget amp to start with, and that you're gonna use it for practising at home: have a look at a handy amp from Elder Audio that Gear4musc sell: http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/RedSub-BP35-35W-Bass-Guitar-Amplifier/IQM At less than 100 quid, imho it blows several 200 quid amps out of the water, and it has practical line inputs and phones output. Funk and slapping and the like are no problem for it. An (almost?) identical amp can be had from Thomann under the brand name Harley Benton, and it's also available as a (Beta 3) Beta Aivin - though I don't know who sell it under that name. My assumptions may be off the mark of course. If you want a really great amp, or want the amp to work at band rehearsals and while gigging, tell us more about your budget and what you're after in an amp. Someone will know! FWIW, you can't go very wrong with a Genz Benz ShuttleMax 12.2 and lots of huge Barefaced cabs. They don't sell those for 100 quid though. best, bert

Hey Jon, Welcome! Yup. it's a great place to chat bass. Friendly gang with community sensitivities. Many people here have returned to playing bass after a long hiatus, so the pattern is recognised. That SH60 is a very nice looking bass. Had never heard about it (am a noob). How does it play and sound? Enjoy the banter! best, bert

Hey Jazzybass, Welcome! I too guess you'll partake soon enough. Roughly same story here: keyboardist for decades, but now, I'll pick up the bass long before switching on a synth. Enjoy the banter! best, bert

Hi Rob (?), If you stick to the late sixties and early seventies from that list, it should be both a nice introduction and a deep dive at the same time. Coltrane and Miles Davis (Bitches Brew, In a Silent Way) are both easy and difficult to get into at the same time, and depending on your reference frame. Sit back and be taken by the flow. Then report back and we'll get you sorted out. Thanks. Yes, I read the Tracers are highly thought of, and used by some guitar heroes. Me, I bought it coz it felt easy to play for a noob like me. Dunno about the DiMarzio's anymore. I do seem to have a vague idea that the different generations of the Tracer came with a few different pickups though. Yeah, like the Jet King a lot. I have this weak spot for everything peculiar, special, unique and quirky - especially if it's cheap and/or old. Must admit I love the Bastard, even though it's far away from what I thought I liked. The highs are not totally filtered out, but subdued, making for a charming sound that people on here called "creamy". I concur. best, bert

Hi Russ, Welcome to the surface. You already know what you're going to, so that's sorted. Congrats with your new life. Don't be a stranger now! BTW, I'll give you £39 for the bass. best, bert

Friends with John, eh? Hm. Awrite, welcome anyway then. Feeling friendly today. Welcome, Lou! It's nice to read you've already experienced something positive here. Please talk us through your bass(es) when you feel like it. Me, I love Hi-Fi sounding, high-powered stuff too, but then i'm just a noob, and will try everything I can get my hands on. Enjoy the site and its banter! best, bert

Hey Robbiano, Welcome to BC, and yes, feel welcome to share some knowledge. Guitars are very welcome of course. We just like to pretend we hate them. Me, I have a Peavey Tracer II and will soon buy a classical guitar in addition. Not that I can play them, mind. As to jazz and classical, ask away. I got into jazz through Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius, then Return to Forever and Weather Report, then Wayne Shorter, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. Maybe there is something for you in that list. As for classical, when you hear something you like, you could post about it, and we could maybe point you towards something similar. I googled the Jet King. What a funky li'l thing that is. Well, enough of my claptrap! Enjoy! best, bert

Hey Paul, Welcome into the fold! As others have said, there's a wealth of info on this site, and a lot of unfo in my posts. Sounds like you're enthusiastic enough to master both, but just make sure that you practise each and every day rather than for hours and hours once in a while. Fifteen minutes per instrument will get you somewhere, but I'd prefer half an hour. Don't teach yourself bad technique. Evening out bad technique takes a lot more time than learning it well right away. Rather invest in getting lessons - even if just for half a year - so you get a good start. Anyway, enjoy the site! best, bert
Ok smart arse....what was the question then?
Demmit, you won. I have just pained my brain cell trying to come up with a really good question, and have deleted every single attempt. Another six hours and 11 minutes I'll never get back best, bert

valve and solid state- what's the difference?
BassTractor replied to MiltyG565's topic in Amps and Cabs
Em, no it isn't?
Technically correct, but it is indeed pinned at the top of the Amps and Cabs forum, which is what Jack meant: http://basschat.co.uk/forum/5-amps-and-cabs/ There's a lot to read in that thread, but of course your question was already answered very well by StingrayPete. best, bert -
Please help out bass legend Joe Osborn!

Pleas of this type get me on the wrong foot. Then, if I can be arsed to check, then I will still vote for the candidate that I prefer. Your plea however is special, as it is dishonest. So I can be arsed to write this, but couldn't be arsed to even read your plea beyond the words "his student". best, bert -
Welcome, Jordan. I think it should be trouble-free, given that the new cover is made for this, and wouldn't contain metals that would affect the magnetic field. best, bert

Hi Bodmin, Welcome to BC. You'll find that huge rivers of info will flow your way. My tip is that before asking a question, you do a search to see if this is readily answered - not to try and hinder you from asking, but so you can take in that info and form an even better question. Your learning will be quicker that way, I think. Anyway, most important thing first: when Leen said "blue", he meant "blue Warwick" of course. Blue Warwick Thumb to be precise. Enjoy! best, bert

Can the X Factor judges hear what we hear on the TV?

Yup! Sony. Not Toshiba. -
Would you buy a bass or amp from Tesco?
BassTractor replied to brensabre79's topic in General Discussion
The 'see it buy it lose interest in it' attitude being critisied on BC of all places is pushing the boundaries of irony.
-
Right away! With a vengeance. Then again, I'd never owned an amp big enough to gig with before, so when starting with bass, I didn't want to repeat that. Bought a 35W for home practice and a 300W with 410 for rehearsal/gigs right away. You yourself just do what falls natural for you. Others are other people. best, bert
