Hey Brensabre, Thanks, man! Yeah, even though much of this was known to me (I must have been unclear) this was much helping indeed - especially your remarks about brand differentiation and its repercussions on different brands. I get "tubey" and "ss", and I get Hi-Fi. What I don't get is what people mean with "that typical <brand> sound". So I was thinking along the lines of a stick list with short characteristiscs of the gear that often is discussed here, say: Gallien Krueger: sounds like <this> Genz Benz: - Shuttles: sound like <this> - Streamliners: sound like <that> tc electronic: sounds like <thusly> except the rh750 which is more like <such> The real question is: "is BC served with such a list, is it doable, and will it work?" best, bert

A head/cab set that will sound great at bedroom volume?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Amps and Cabs
Ah! Great! Thanks very much for the response, guys! Martin, I buy that idea of an EBS immediately, but thought the TCE BH250 had "that tc sound". Could one say it's one of the really Hi-Fi ones? Alex, I see the point of that active monitor. But, if I understand this correctly, I can also just get the Barefaced cab I want anyway (no honey here - just a fact), and a little Hi-Fi head with good EQ. Can I? In case I could buy a Hi-Fi gig set and use it at home as well. I do want to go out and play with my buddy's band eventually. WWH, I'm sure the tech21 is great, but I already have 1 guitar combo and 2 bass combos. Also the Little Bastard set sound bee'ootifully with a guitar. Right now I want a separate head and cab, and experiment with different types of connections. Want to experiment and learn. Thanks again! best, bert -
IMHO, the Ashdown Little Bastard 30W with an Ashdown LB-112 cab sounds wonderful at low volume. But I'd like a second little rig with totally different sound for experimenting and learning. So I aske thee: Does a lightweight (max 20 kg per unit) little head/cab set exist that sounds very different than my Ashdown set, say really Hi-Fi, and that will start sounding great even at very low volume? Listening to a TC Electronic BH500 with BC212 cab, I seemed to notice it needed quite some volume before starting to sound well. From experience in home Hi-Fi equipment, I suppose the same will go for a lot of amps/cabs. Within reason, price is not really an object, as I'll just save until I can afford it, and I'm quite good at that. Thanks for any help! best, bert

So I'm used to expecting (from a bass amp at least) that a tube amp has tubey sound and that an hi-fi style amp has this revealing character that shows the wonderfulness of a good bassist, and bluntly exposes me. So far so good. But then, people rave about or dislike amps that have "that typical GK sound" or "that typical TC Electronic sound". This far not good anymore. So, is there any web-resource or thread here that gives the skinny on this subject matter, as in how different brands or series sound, or what their sound design is about? I've done quite some searches, but haven't found a dedicated thread, and else feel the info is much scattered, and often very unclear for a noob like myself. Worthy a thread? Sticky? Doable? best, bert

great bass players with terrible technique, are there any?
BassTractor replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
Terrible technique - - Check! Bass player - - Check! Great (as in overweight) - - Check! The answer is BassTractor. What did I win? Seriously though, bad technique is what limits you or hurts you, as expressed before. I have no idea about bass players, but as an organist I'm trained to hear other organists' technique, including fingering, through their playing, and it's very often quite revealing. As an example, one can often easily hear it if an organist has practised the piece on a pneumatic organ before playing it on a mechanical one during the concert. The techniques used might be perfect for the pneumatic organ, but in that case are telling (and limiting/bad) on the mechanical one. In popular music, we have this fun thing called "style", which often is the result of the limiting capacities of the players' technique and imagination. Some great music has come out of that tiny window, so I wouldn't care about it too much, and certainly not close it. best, bert -
The crowd are also the same people who bought mr blooby and crazy frog.
Hehehe. Right now I feel like one lucky bastard for not having any idea what mr blooby is, and only a vague reminiscense of crazy frog. As to Mustang Sally, as indicated before by others, it's all about how you play it. Some lazy buggers standing like salt sacks and barely playing it up to speed is murder-type killing, especially if the D.i.C.K uses the ugliest sound in the cheap synth to do the brass parts. But an inspired version with strong beat and drive, and a really personal touch, can be killer. Imagine what a keyboardist with a filthy Hammond can do with this track, changing it each and every performance. Lots of space for a bassist as well, so I can't see any problem other than that it's not Gentle Giant or Zappa. best, bert

Hey CT, As Bluejay says. Sorry I can't welcome you, as the mobile site is down. Better luck tomorrow! BTW, enjoy the site, and don't be a silent partner! (Don't snore either for that matter.) All the best, bert

Not quite new, but a newbie all the same
BassTractor replied to serialslacker's topic in Introductions
Hey Mikey, Welcome to BC, or rather to its surface. Guitars seem like a nice easy start for people aspiring to take it up a notch to bass later. Good luck with the sale, and don't be a stranger. best, bert -
Hey Peter, Welcome to the fold. On here, I gather introductions aren't necessary as much as appreciated. Have fun with the band as well as here on BC. best, bert

Hey Anton, Welcome to the fora. Enjoy the site and the banter, but please don't spend your love on me. Rather use it on Eunice Gayson, Daniela Bianchi, Martine Beswick or, should you prefer her, Karoline Wilhelmine Charlotte Blamauer. best, bert

Twas worth a lot. Thanks for posting that. best, bert

Alyctes said it better than I would have Welcome aboard! As a bedroom player, you need 3 rigs and 5 basses. Minimum. It's the rules, ya know. Enjoy the site! all the best. bedroomplayerbert

Hey BF, Welcome to BC! I hope it will be rewarding for you. As to getting to know everyone: good luck. Apparently there's more than 21,000. But come over and grab a cuppa anytime. Enjoy the banter and sometimes exchange of info. best, bert
1st thread i go to after opening BC is "basses for sale" but i've not got GAS ... Have i
Indeed you don't. Only strong people (with character and without GAS) can even stomach looking there. Me, I'm lost there. Have warning signs hanging on my body: "No smoking - no naked flames".

Hey Seb, Welcome to BC! Your amazing gear is amazing, but if and only if the RBX is black. Not charcoal! If it's charcoal, you're out. Enjoy the banter! best, bert
i've got a mim and 2 MIA's , i trust my mim, ive gigged it many a time without a back up
You see, WishICouldWalk? I was wrong and you're in the clear! No GAS for you! Oh ... Wait! It's MIY ... PS: I trust my MIK too.

Congrats! Live changing event that is. Dunno what "conventional" is in your neck, but here, we bought every newspaper of the day and the following day, and presented them when the kid became 21. As to basses, I'll only mention that 2013 probably will see the lim.ed. 10th anniversary Bongo. Yes, it's expensive, and maybe a nice gift like that should be about typical 2013 style and choice of colour rather than about an expensive bass. best, bert

I'm sure the KSD is MIK, but the sticker, man! The sticker! If the sticker is MIA, you're OK. If it's MIM, you're never gonna trust it, no matter how good it is. GAS will ensue. Just hoping I'm not the bringer of bad tidings. best, bert

Hey Rog, Welcome into the fold! BS? We're up for that, yes. But you knew that. You picked up your old Precision again, or? Enjoy! best, bert

Depends. Is it MIM or MIA?
