I'm sorry to read that the shirts don't make BC enough money (if I understood that correctly). That's a real shame. I'd guess everyone expected BC to make some money off them. How about just setting up prices? We should be willing to pay, shouldn't we? I for one think the new t-shirts are un-effing-believably awesome and way ... er ... [i][b]WAY[/b][/i] more attractive in real life than in the shop photos. I've had a lot of positive comments on the Technical Bass t-shirt especially. That said, once everyone knows the shirts are not helping a lot, we can always just donate in addition to buying a shirt. best, bert

For me it was about offering everyone like myself - be it noobs or people with limited amp experience - a chance to read short texts on the specifics of often talked about gear, and "that typical <brand> sound". But right I now feel it's best left to YouTube. It just hadn't crossed my mind that factory's sound samples would be out on the web. Edit: written before Brensabre's last posts, so my reference to science is not a response to his. Thanks for the contributions, folks. For me this is not about science. Simply put, it's mostly about help for noobs and others who have no substantial gear experience. As long as people can talk about "that typical <brand> sound" and be understood by many others, one can also put words to it in such a way that more people get to grips with what is talked about. In my Hi-Fi days, we'd advise Infinity speakers for people who loved GRP-brand West-coast popjazz. People who'd just play classical music would be advised to rather buy Bowers &amp; Wilkins. Also, we'd be able to put to words how these speakers would respond to different instrument constellations and amps. Surely something of the same goes for bass amps without denying the implications of different basses and different playing techniques. Alternatively, how about if people post links to say YouTube vids when they come across something that really shows "that typical <brand> sound". Us noobs would be greatly helped, I'm sure. best, bert

Personally I'd not forget looking at small bass combos. They're likely to have a lot of functionality that is nice for bassists, like aux input, headphone output, effects send/return and EQ adapted to the bass's spectrum. That and a handle! Of course it all depends on your needs, but I just wanted to make sure this aspect wasn't lost. One of mine (the HB) cost only 85 quid, and is probably a steal. Good luck with chosing! best, bert

Yeah, even though much of this was known to me (I must have been unclear) this was much helping indeed - especially your remarks about brand differentiation and its repercussions on different brands. I get "tubey" and "ss", and I get Hi-Fi. What I don't get is what people mean with "that typical <brand> sound". So I was thinking along the lines of a stick list with short characteristiscs of the gear that often is discussed here, say: Gallien Krueger: sounds like <this> Genz Benz: - Shuttles: sound like <this> - Streamliners: sound like <that> tc electronic: sounds like <thusly> except the rh750 which is more like <such> The real question is: "is BC served with such a list, is it doable, and will it work?" best, bert

Alex, I see the point of that active monitor. But, if I understand this correctly, I can also just get the Barefaced cab I want anyway (no honey here - just a fact), and a little Hi-Fi head with good EQ. Can I? In case I could buy a Hi-Fi gig set and use it at home as well. I do want to go out and play with my buddy's band eventually. WWH, I'm sure the tech21 is great, but I already have 1 guitar combo and 2 bass combos. Also the Little Bastard set sound bee'ootifully with a guitar. IMHO, the Ashdown Little Bastard 30W with an Ashdown LB-112 cab sounds wonderful at low volume. But I'd like a second little rig with totally different sound for experimenting and learning. So I aske thee: Does a lightweight (max 20 kg per unit) little head/cab set exist that sounds very different than my Ashdown set, say really Hi-Fi, and that will start sounding great even at very low volume? Listening to a TC Electronic BH500 with BC212 cab, I seemed to notice it needed quite some volume before starting to sound well. From experience in home Hi-Fi equipment, I suppose the same will go for a lot of amps/cabs. Within reason, price is not really an object, as I'll just save until I can afford it, and I'm quite good at that. Thanks for any help! best, bert

So I'm used to expecting (from a bass amp at least) that a tube amp has tubey sound and that an hi-fi style amp has this revealing character that shows the wonderfulness of a good bassist, and bluntly exposes me. So far so good. But then, people rave about or dislike amps that have "that typical GK sound" or "that typical TC Electronic sound". This far not good anymore. So, is there any web-resource or thread here that gives the skinny on this subject matter, as in how different brands or series sound, or what their sound design is about? I've done quite some searches, but haven't found a dedicated thread, and else feel the info is much scattered, and often very unclear for a noob like myself. Worthy a thread? Sticky? Terrible technique - - Check! Bass player - - Check! Great (as in overweight) - - Check! The answer is [i]BassTractor[/i]. What did I win? Seriously though, bad technique is what limits you or hurts you, as expressed before. I have no idea about bass players, but as an organist I'm trained to hear other organists' technique, including fingering, through their playing, and it's very often quite revealing. As an example, one can often easily hear it if an organist has practised the piece on a pneumatic organ before playing it on a mechanical one during the concert. The techniques used might be perfect for the pneumatic organ, but in that case are telling (and limiting/bad) on the mechanical one. In popular music, we have this fun thing called "style", which often is the result of the limiting capacities of the players' technique and imagination. Some great music has come out of that tiny window, so I wouldn't care about it too much, [b]and certainly not close it[/b]. best, bert
