1.
it just rocked, if I'm allowed to use this expression in jazz context.
Granted, and a good story that was too. best, bert
  2.
My understanding is it's essentially a guitar that sounds like a bass but sized like a guitar.............
Yeah, but it's a lovely, quirky bass (I virtually ruined a concert for my then wife once, coz I kept telling her we needed to see that bass afterwards, and that I needed one badly - this was before I even switched to bass). BTW, thanks for this thread folks! best, bert
  3. What Doddy says. Here's why, and please forgive the lack of technical correctness: Tthere's a physical process going on in the brain where more and more units, let's call them "cells", are reserved for what you're working on. When you make mistakes, these cells are programmed for the mistakes. You don't want that. You wanna program them for the right tones, technique and timing. When more and more emitters and receptors and things are programmed for the correct playing, the brain speed augments and you can do the same stuff of the same quality at higher speeds. best, bert
  4. Hey Sammy, Welcome! Can't tell anything about the bridge, but hope you enjoy BC. I like the bass though. Might even get used to the headstock. The stuff has character. best, bert
  5. Hey Gary, Welcome! You're one in a long line of people who come back to the bass after hiati (must be the plural, now mustn't it?) and stumble upon BC. Enjoy your stay! best, bert
  6. A blissful few days here. Played more than ever - which was a necessity, coz it feels like I now am back to square one. Must ratify the Daily Study Law of 2012 soonest. Took reception of a whopping two basses (Bongo and CV Jazz) and two amps (Little Bastard + LB 112, and HB 110W combo) Got a very good price for the MAG 300 combo I sold. Now trying to sell the car for this. Walking is healthy. best, bert
  7.
Kinda funny this thread is still up and running after 2 years
Twas restarted when Bluejay celebrated her first whole year of being a BCer, see.
  8.
Did nobody know the sockets Ashdown use are dual purpose Speakon/1/4" Jack ??
I didn't. Understood from here that ramming a jack into a Speakon could be bad mkay, if the Speakon wasn't the dual purpose type, so I sent a message to Ashdown with two questions - one of which was answered immediately, at 11 PM or so (whoa!), whilst the dual purpose question was left unanswered. Didn't want to bother him anymore. Got someone to make me one, and do I like Speakon right now!
Exactly my thinking & why I got the MiBass 220
An Ashdown is a modern Hi-Fi thingie? I had no idea. It looked at me with take-me-home eyes, but I had to be stern with it - or so I imagined. Might get me one of those next year then. Right now I'm bleeding enough as it is. So the Mi10 is better than the Mi812 then? best, bert
  9.
is there a specific reason why you decided to buy or change your basses
Noobly speaking, for me it's all about knowing nothing and feeling an eagerness and a [s]need[/s] desire to have experienced it all before settling with the ones that have the sounds and necks that do it for me. Not doing well though, as I can't imagine selling any of them right now. It's also about psychology. I always delve intensely and deeply into stuff that interests me. best, bert
  10.
Long story but I dont mind telling it again. The Ex was a muso and when he moved out he left a bass behind. So I thought 'I'm not going to sit round moping I 'm going to pick up that thing and bloody well learn to play it'. So I booked myself some lessons and was hooked from day one!
Damn you! That was the short version! best, bert
  11. This is just unbeliveble. A person into tautology and pleonasm has a vague dream, and here the gods make it happen. The wonders of the world are not over yet, and we still have more than a month to live! Fantastic! Thanks, Bruno! Great you came to the surface as well. You like basses, by any chance? best, bert
  12.
"really famous pop artist, and my trombone player brings me a sheet" Really!? - I don't think a trombone has been heard in the charts for 40+ years. Who's the really famous pop artist - you can say... this is not a national security issue.
IMNSHO, Faithless neither deserves nor needs the sarcastic distrust that is dripping from your post. Also, have you never seen a broadcasting organisation's orchestra back up a pop singer? Then you need to come out less. Also, "really famous" may well mean "really famous locally, and it's not interesting for you brits to read the name of a Lithuanian pop singer". best, bert
  13. In contrast to my expectations, this thread was not dull at all. I find it interesting to read what people have hoped, thought and experienced, and what basses they have left after this, often long, journey. Thanks for sharing, guys 'n' gals! I'll edit my short list then - for you reading pleasure (? - - one can always hope): Gone: 1980 P-copy (I believe) that wasn't mine to begin with - may have been a Cort. Buddy I lived with bought it, but I used it most, whilst he tracted his g****rs. That P-thing was not too shabby, and taught me that I would thrive on owning and playing basses. 2011 AXL Marquee AP-800. Bought on a friday or saturday just for punch-in tones and themes in otherwise keyboards-based music. Returned on monday as the week-end had taught me that I LOVED the bass, and I was not gonna settle for an Axl with a twisted neck. Still have: See sig. Oh, wait, some people suppress sigs. OK then: 2011 RockBass Corvette. The exchange for the Axl. Beautiful and with menacing sound. Easy to play AND had a "W" on the headstock. 2011 Hohner B2B. Some weeks later, I found this old love cricket bat for less than 1/4 of new price. NEW! Couldn't resist. It isn't set up properly, and I'm leaving it like that - just for the experience. Keeps in tune whatever I do. That, and it's my passive alibi. 2005 EBMM Bongo 4-HH. Some weeks later, I found this love of my life just a mile from my home, used. Couldn't resist and started my long journey of eating rolled oats exclusively. Can do "everything" but a P and a StingRay. The cricket bat will do the P though. 2009 EBMM Bongo 4-HS. Just bought. Was sent to a friend. Will hear it in some years. Then I will equip it with very different strings from those on the HH. Bliss and Heaven all in two basses. 2012 Squier CV '60s Jazz. Just bought. Was sent to a friend. Will hear it in some years. I've always loved the Jazz more than the P. Need to feel that neck, and reportedly the Squier has that neck. Very curious. I hope it will teach my friend to play and love the bass. Since I'm old, and will die in some decades, I don't see myself moving any of these basses unless pecuniar reasons force me. Yup: happy. best, bert
I just get tired of hearing negative stuff about these amps when my experience has been anything but
As you of course know, positive experiences can't be extrapolated either. We have to get an impression from the "data" that fora like BC can give us, and work from there. By large, the impression will do.
Sorry for the rather sarcastic and testy attempt to say that earlier.
Class. best, bert
  15. Relax a little, guys! I will take a punt, but really must wait til I have sold more stuff. Wife's sold already, but am having trouble with getting rid of the kids and the Volvo. Thanks for the input! I'm sure to buy one as soon as I have the dough. As Bert indicated, they're really cheap. Also, I love rolled oats... best, bert
  16.
Did it work Bert? You've gone all quiet like
and:
+30 (watts) lol. We crave an update...
Sorry, guys. Things went a little differently. The MAG combo was sold right after I had put in an ad, and the LB-112 that arrived needed a Speakon cable no shop here had in store. Time came, passed and went away. Anyway, today I was finally able to hear the Bastard through the Bastard speaker. I was overwhelmed with the bass response: full and "round", but clear and defined (I don't mean overtone-defined. I mean the slow movements of the speaker themselves). LUVERLY! Overtones were natural and present, in a modest way. This pair sounds (to my ears at least) less subdued and retired-at-the-back than the MAG 300 with MAG 410, and also more personal. However, in a maybe strange way, I feel the MAG combo seems more regular and general purpose, but I like the Bastards more. Very, very satisfied indeed. I feel secure I will love this set. Have not yet managed to try with the active basses in the LOW input, but am looking forward to some dirty tubey sounds. I've ordered another LB-112 straight away (not rich, you know, but selling everything I see in and around my house to get the dough - Sorry, the wife's gone already). Another thread makes me expect that together, they will sound roughly like a LB-212, which seems good. Mind you, I'm not gonna live with just the LBs. I want a little modern hi-fi thingie on their side. They can marry for all I care, or make bastard babies - I just want both alternatives present in the same room, so I can plug 'n' play 'n' learn. Thanks for the interest! best, bert
  17. Hey Adam, Welcome to BC! 21/10? Whoa! 56/1 here. I'll die before I can play. Anyway, you like jazzes then? Enjoy the banter! best, bert
  18.
sunshine of your love cream.
Always thought it was love cream where the sun don't shine, so this sunshine biz is new to me. Must surely take a punt.
thank you all
You can say! All I can do is bow my head in shame for not having asked the question. Awesome thread. Thanks to everyone involved! best, bert

    Hi!

Hi Svirac, Welcome to BC! I hope you will have a good time here. It's nice that you play everything. I don't yet, but I would love to learn all styles. It sounds lovely to be able to do so. Now enjoy the site. It's enormously large! best, bert
  20. Gone: 1980 P (or J) copy that wasn't mine to begin with - may have been a Cort. 2011 AXL Marquee AP-800 Still have: See sig. Oh, wait, some people suppress sigs. OK then: 2005 EBMM Bongo 4-HH 2009 EBMM Bongo 4-HS 2011 Hohner B2B 2011 RockBass Corvette 2012 Squier CV '60s Jazz best, bert
  21. Thanks, BRX. Will check them out. Seem quite more expensive a first sight, but then that just means saving longer. best, bert
  22. Thanks very much, Schnozzalee! Of course you couldn't resist! I wouldn't have couldn't not neither. Er ... either... er ... It took me some time before I got it though. Alien foreigner and that kinda thing. Anyway, thanks for the info. Hardware doesn't scare me. Only necks scare me, as I can't just pull a new one with the same type of capacities out of my chain saw. Fragility doesn't scare me either. I can well live with using it in controlled environments only, and always transport it in a case - if that is enough for it to survive. Hm. I might take a punt! thanko mucho, bert
  23. Does that refer to the Longhorn? [thinking, thinking, thinking] Yeah, of course it does. I get it now. best, bert
  24. Noob question: I've wanted a Longhorn ever since Rinus Gerritsen in Golden Earring built himself a double neck version. Also, I've read about the signature sound from playing close to the bridge with a pick, and my imagination tells me I probably remember that sound, and will probably love it. However, I also read that many a Danelectro isn't good, but I only want a good one. So, does anyone here know what often is wrong with them? If I order one locally, can I find out about this myself? What do I look and listen for? Or: Is there any seller on the web that sells only the good ones and sends the rest back? I have no trouble paying more for that kind of service. Thanks! best, bert
  25.
I was pointed to the relevant manufacturers website.
To me this is the most alarming part of it all. 1) as if you didn't know 2) as if you're being a nuisance. A normal seller should provide good reasons for not having pics, and show willingness to change the situaton. Then again, it does also depend on seller's standing in the community. Just my two Norse "øre" best, bert
