Bill, you are aware you're responsible for the wave of suicides here on BC, are you? Great playing! Me too, I loved the stuff at the end. best, bert

I'm sorry to read that they're crossover-intensive, coz I suppose that that means the crossover gets more complicated than wished for. If it indeed does mean that, I can see how you would fight against the demon of declining sound quality. <kidding> How about this idea: in a perfect casing (roughly egg shaped), you just drill one tiny hole in the "thick" end, and in that tiny hole you just put a perfectly linear and super quick element with 140 dB dynamics? Now that could have a simple crossover! </kidding> BTW, and unrelated but fun: a buddy of my uncle was a fanatic speaker builder. He had his stereo in the basement, with horn speakers starting there, but ending in the living room. So he'd put on a vinyl record downstairs, set the volume, and run upstairs to enjoy the music in his comfy chair. I loved it, but wouldn't want it. best, bert

Hi Sutty, First: welcome to the site. Should you decide to stay, you'll find there's a lot to learn here. Cheap bass: avoid a bad bass, as in a bass that is not properly built and set up. It will ruin your joy and your progress. Really good stuff: Yamaha RBX 170, or if you go up a little in price also the Ibanez basses. Reportedly the RBX beats the equally priced Ibanez. A little more expensive: Squier VM series Squier CV series Many say also the Squier Affinity is good, but I personally have negative experience with how they were screwed together. May have been unlucky. Good luck! Have fun! best, bert

Hi David, Welcome to the site! I have no views. Sorry! Don't know those. But at any rate I hope you'll enjoy what BC has to offer. best, bert

Hey Hamnett, So 666 is no longer alone, then? Welcome to BC! I see you may like pointy things. Me, I like square and round. Anyway, enjoy! best, bert

Hey Jim, Welcome to BC! Yeah, you been around a bit indeed, but I can't imagine you beng too old to be in a band, unless you really were Made In Japan in '26, in which case you may have to be a trifle careful with the touring bit. Enjoy the site, and join the banter. Tell more and teach sum! best, bert

Hey Duke, You're welcome. The bass tractor sadly may not exist: I can't find it on the web anymore, and it does have a "Thunderbirds" (60s UK tv show) ring to it. Cool though. Crossovers: nope. I was just joking. Had no idea though that they still were more difficult to get right. Live to learn, eh? all the best, bert

It Was 50 Years Ago Today! (Well, In A Couple Of Weeks)
BassTractor replied to Hobbayne's topic in General Discussion
... and those extremely shocking collarless jackets Oh yes, I know the drill. The Shadows? How can an artist with "The" as part of the name be acceptable, I ask you! Bach didn't have any "The"! (annoying twat when he was between 6 and 10 years old) best, bert -
Hi Ben, Welcome to the surface then! <suppress old Jag joke> ... </suppress old Jag joke> Good luck with the sale and the buy, and enjoy your stay! best, bert
that would offend the stapled devotees.
Nah, the stapled devotees aren't stapled so much as safetypinned and razorbladed. Me, I middle-class-hijacked punk music in the late seventies after initially having wished it went to Hull, but I must surely revisit PIL, coz in the mid eighties I saw no reason at all to even finish listening to one song. I do like Muse to some limited degree, but can't be arsed to buy a song. The Jools thing was kinda cool and refreshing to me despite its obvious drawing on U2. However, the use of the Kitara seemed limited. That or the Kitara is limited. Idunno, but the technology allows for a lot more. For the time being, the Kitara sounds like its in baby shoes - judging from the YT vids. best, bert

Hi Duke, I can do it for you. The best thing would be you shipped the casings to me and I'll design [s]my own cro..[/s] your crossovers! Seriously though: welcome to BC! Maybe you'll decide to stay after having experienced something good here. I'm sure someone will step forward for you. I'd do it, but I live on the wrong spot. Good luck! best, bert

How has your day been as a bassist?
BassTractor replied to charliethornton's topic in General Discussion
I received my Letts bass today and I swore I would never buy a production bass again. It is marvelous. I have also secured some lessons with one of the chatters on here, so all in all, an excellent bass based day.
Congrats! Lovely beast! I'd buy it if I had the money. Have a free bump. My bass day was good. Working on some Gentle Giant (though no immediate plans on being able to play it) after having been inspired by this: Three Friends doing "Playing the Game" and "Just the Same" -
Why not just donate a little regularly, to say thanks for the joy, no matter if one has sold something? As far as I've understood the comments here, one often sells either because one is broke or because one needs the money for new gear. Both may make it bad timing. However, a fiver every now and again won't break anyone, I'd think. Or are people more in spending mood after having sold an item? best, bert
if its working for you (be you a bedroom bassist or a legend), and your happy with it, and its not doing you any damage then its all good.
I get this, but does it also work for bedroom legends like me? best, bert

It Was 50 Years Ago Today! (Well, In A Couple Of Weeks)
BassTractor replied to Hobbayne's topic in General Discussion
Oh boy! Then It Was 50 Years Ago Today! (Well, In A Couple Of Weeks) that I tried to get the grown-ups to understand that they shouldn't listen to that simplistic Beatles music, and that they rather should concentrate on Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, ... and also, It Was 50 Years Ago Today! (Well, In A Couple Of Weeks) that I was flabbergasted for the first time about how the grown-ups weren't more grateful about being taught these life-saving insights. So, It Was 50 Years Ago Today! (Well, In A Couple Of Weeks) that, for the first time, I was being that little, annoying twat that I can still sometimes be. Sigh! Did you really have to remind me? best, bert -
Hey Axe, Welcome back! This from a noob and new BC-member. You already know the deal: we'll be needing your full name, card number and internet bank log-in details, dazzall. Enjoy the site! best, bert

Hey Muso, Welcome to BC! Really great job you did with the user name. I'm flabbergasted it wasn't taken. Well done! You must be relatively good on the bass as well, seeing as you got the Curved Air gig. I'm happy to hear the band has reformed, and must listen to the new stuff. Looking at Wikipedia, are you Chris then, or? Anyway, enjoy the site and spread some wisdom. best, bert

Hi Steve, Welcome to BC! You made a wise choice with the procrastination, coz that way you came to the right place. Nice people here (not me). There's already several Bristolonianites here on BC. You may know some of them. Anyway, enjoy the site! best, bert

Hey Jon, Welcome to BC! Nice introduction you wrote. I love you already. After 47 years of playing keyboards (professionally for two decades), I still have no amp for them (don't ask). Anyway, enjoy your stay! best, bert
I don't currently own a car
Just like me. I'll let you in on some info then. Weight becomes more critical then. So how long is the longest walk from your house to a gig?
The Streamliner is 375W into 8 ohms, is that correct? My Promethean only delivers 250W into 8 ohms so I'm thinking perhaps that wouldn't be enough to get the volume that I'd need.
Yes, 375 W into 8 Ohm, but the numbers will not tell you which one is louder, has more volume or is heard better in the mix. Both Streamliner and Promethean are said to be loud. The cab is equally as important. If I remember correctly, both Midget and Compact are effecive and loud as well. If all of this is true, then the Promethean should have no trouble in most gigging situations. Also, even with otherwise equal equipment, other than the wattage that is, the difference between 250 W and 375 W isn't much. If you do chooce two 8 Ohm cabs, then the Promethean does 500 W and the Streamliner 600 W, and that in itself is no difference to talk about. I'd try with the Promethean before using more money - that is if you think it's not too heavy, and sounds good. best, bert

Yeah! You should invest in one of those nice Behringer DI thingies! Me, I'd go the 2 * 112 way or similar. Two light lifts is better than one heavier one, and there's enough of lightweight 112s around. Have you defined how much you want to lift in one go? Edit: Oh, and what type of budget? best, bert

bassist stereotype - which one are you?
BassTractor replied to lowdowner's topic in General Discussion
I may have told this before, but the doorkeeper/concierge at my music college used to tell what instrument people played when he'd never seen them before, i.e. during spring auditions. I didn't believe him, so he proved it to me in an utterly convincing way. Of his descriptions of how he did it, I only remember a few right now: Pianists are the Grands Artistes who come through a door with flapping long coats and an air like: "Here I am! Start worshipping me!" Organists are nervous and nerdy, and use badly styled clothes. The bassist stereotype I was taught in Holland was sth. about honest, serving, hard-working people with modesty and a philosophical outlook on life. They could however both be geniuses and simpletons. best, bert -
To me music is music. The more I do it the less I give a sh*t about how I make it. I play a few instruments, but all I care about is the song. I just make music, and that's all that's important.
Go away. You're simply too wise for these fora. Do not answer. Go away! best, bert

Hi there, young 'un, Welcome to BC from a dino. You'll feel at home here. Lotsa seniors, bikers, grumpy ones and even bass players. Enjoy! best, bert

Wow! A Korg Precision Kaossilator! Must own! I like this concept, if I do get it right that is. Freeing up his right hand for bending and effects, is a welcome feature in my book. Me, I stick my (Kaossilator and) Kaoss Pad on my keyboard or bass with Velcron, and have to move at least one hand from the instrument to use the Korgs. So to me, the Misa-type system seems like a real nice addition to the instrument family. best, bert
