What were you doing when you were Eleven years old?
BassTractor replied to lowdown's topic in General Discussion
Your parents let you drive their car when you were eleven ? Top parents !!
My dad did exactly that. Not that we were allowed to drive the car freely, but he did argue that one never knows what circumstances might suddenly demand that one of the kids took over the steering wheel. As a result, both me and my sister were taught to drive when we were eleven years old, and thus learnt to drive before our mother did (she went to an official driving school later). Our abilities were also used every time we had to tow the car. Oh, and dad of course was a village bobby... -
Just found a new musical style tat I really like, but having looked it up I'm now confused! Improvised Continuo anyone? All I can find is stuff about Basso Continuo, and nothing that really relates to what they are talking about 13 minutes in.
Assuming you mean the part where he says the improvising continuo groups of the baroque are the predecessors, etc. : These are Basso Continuo groups who "improvised" their parts, as was the way it was done in those days, meaning these instruments (often a cello and a harpsichord only, but more or different instruments could be in the group) would typically get a sheet with the notation consisting of a bass note and some numbers, and they would then know what to do. So it's not free form jazz exactly, but the group did only get the harmonic foundation, and would or could decide their exact parts on the spot - depending on allowed preparation time and other circumstances. This would often be very easy (I've personally gone straight to recording without any preparation at all) or difficult enough that the BC group would need to have meetings to decide on how to divide the roles and fill in the details. You may not understand this, but the very worst a cellist knows is when the harpsichordist's left hand is stirring in the cello frequency range! The music you hear when he tells this is a song from "L'Ormindo", a relatively early baroque opera by Francesco Cavalli, probably as sung by Nuria Rial. This highlights how crazy this BC group (basso continuo group!) could go with improvisation. Luvverly stuff! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH8RLaWuLis

OTB 500 vs Streamliner 900 - any experience?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Amps and Cabs
Sorry - I didn't read the very first post properly. I thought some was just asking for opinions of each amp
Ah! You need new glasses too! Then just sell your Jule and Demeter.
Streamliner imo is a superb amp, but yes, cabs make a huge difference. Just as a short point; with B/F Super Twelve, bass rotary back to 9 o'clock, low mids boosted with Scroeder 2 x 12 (tweeter off), bass rotary at 1 o/clock, low mids cut That to get a tone as close as I can get to JPJ on Zepp 11
Zepp went to eleven? I always thought they just went to nine! Thanks, Karl!
Terror does 500 into 8 ohm as well, kinda think that is a cool feature that more amp makers could consider.
Aye. I read an article once explaining something about how that should be the case for all output transistor based amps, and why it nevertheless is not. Forgot the technical intricacies though. -
OTB 500 vs Streamliner 900 - any experience?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Amps and Cabs
Isn't the Streamliner 900w into 4 Ohm?

Yep, the Streamliner is 900w into 4 ohm. [...] it's interactive with itself (if that makes sense),
Oops! Thanks, guys! I've updated him with this now. Yes, Muzz, that makes sense. It has no friends, and talks with itself.... just like me now I think of it, so I'm keeping it! But yeah, I remember that aspect from BC, and had the same experience. The GBE is more straightforward. -
OTB 500 vs Streamliner 900 - any experience?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'd take the Orange over a Streamliner any day.
Shshshshshsh! The potential customer already has a Terror Bass, and I need new glasses! Seriously though, I've told him I believe the Streamliner basically has a different character rather than more guts, just in case he thinks 900W into 2 Ohm is a lot more than 500W into 4 Ohm. -
OTB 500 vs Streamliner 900 - any experience?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Amps and Cabs
I assumed that these were like hot cakes as they seem universally loved.
Yeah, my impression is that they indeed are hot cakes also here in Norway - even though Genz Benz were not imported to Norway AFAIK. Maybe it's just that my price is too high. I don't think it is, but one never knows. A new Tonehammer isn't much more expensive, and that might just be a part of the explanation. -
OTB 500 vs Streamliner 900 - any experience?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Amps and Cabs
The Orange is much darker and grits up quickly. Very 'thick' rock tone. The Streamliner ca add grit, I real shines as sounding like a high end tube pre-amp....and will be able to offer clean pristine yet warm tones.

I'd agree with what has been said - the OTB was quite limited in its tone and the EQ didn't seem to do much either. The Streamliner had a much cleaner tone available that you could choose to grind up with the use of the 'Gain' button on the amp, or a pedal.
Thanks to you too, guys! I had this vague notion in the same rough vain, and you three worded it with heft. I'll just translate what you have said, and tell him that. I'd already told him that my rough take was that the Streamliner stayed clean longer and was way more flexible, but the point about the high-end tube pre was new to me (though I did tell him it sounded high-end to my ears, with presence), and I'd forgotten about the OTB's EQ not doing that much.
Good luck with the sale. Not that you should need it! Lots of people love those amps!
Thanks, M@23 ! I think I do need it! "Fun" fact is that my GBE 750 went for the asking price to the first who showed an interest. The Streamliner gets a lot more attention, but still, people don't wanna pay to get one. At some point, I may just go "Up yours, you effin' spoilt Norse brats!", and rather offer it to BC instead. Thanks for the help! Bert -
OTB 500 vs Streamliner 900 - any experience?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Amps and Cabs
Steamliner = more headroom, round, clearer and cleaner. Orange = growly/grindy, won't stay as clean at volume.
Thanks, man! That fits rather nicely with the impression I had from reading on BC and from the few minutes of experience I had with them on my Little Bastard cabs.
Also, I'd tell him to do his own homework! It's not like it's hard to find info on either of those two.
Nah. I think it's a reasonable question. He didn't boss me around or demand I provide the info. He was just asking a question he assumed I knew the answer to. Reading about both individually is not the same as comparing them directly, which he assumes I've done. Likewise, I do not boss around or demand in this thread. I just hope someone has compared them, and is willing to share the knowledge. -
Trying to sell my Streamliner 900, and a potential customer asks me to compare it to the OTB 500, but I don't have experience enough for a good answer. Can anyone help me here? My personal impression from the few minutes these amps have been switched on was that the Orange basically had one character, but suitable to what I call a broad pop/rock range, whilst the Genz seemed way more flexible to me. Correct? The customer asks about guts - probably as in felt power and the like, but I have no idea. Can one say something in general without knowing the exact cabs he's gonna use it on? What would you tell this guy? Thanks!

Do you think the thickness of a bass neck affects tone? How?
BassTractor replied to Dood's topic in General Discussion
Coz it's physics, that's why! For your roof beams, are you gonna buy 2*4 or 2*8? (sorry if this is not English) -
Sometimes it's (partly) about whether the candidate has personality enough to say "no". IMHO that too is interesting with candidates.

Behringer DeepMind12 Synthesizer - New 12 Voice Analogue Synth
BassTractor replied to HowieBass's topic in General Discussion
It was never really the synth for me, but this new vid from a different source than Behringer is dragging me even closer to actually using the money on one, if only as an addition to the collection, and I'm still an 80s pads hater and a Juno hater : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEdVFSh5uiI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEdVFSh5uiI -
This is my 2004 version
Thanks, Agente. I can't read it, but is does have a different setup than the one from the Behringer site, so I guess you too have the guitar version. I now seem to remember that this should be visible in the setting examples. Could be wrong of course.

Korg announce ARP Odyssey synth - - updated
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Other Instruments
Forgot to mention that Korg have confirmed TWO desktop versions: Rev. 1 and Rev. 3. This is about colours only, as all Rev.s contain all three filters. Haven't read an explanation for the lack of a Rev. 2 -
Here you go, post #21 to download the bass manual
Thanks, MacDaddy! That thread was a lot younger than the ones I was searching in. At any rate this confirms that the one I downloaded from the Behringer site is correct. Solved! Another job well done.
-
Thanks for responding, Dave! I can't really remember what was wrong with it. Also, I can't really compare the PDF with my own, as my own appeared to be in Chinese, and lacks the settings examples. That said, the word "guitar" seems to reverberate in my brain. Maybe the text or part of it was about a guitar version - if such a thing exists.
I'm thinking it could be a stingray neck on a sterling body.
Nah. It's a Stingray body alright. A Sterling is slanted in its design, and has more of a slab approach. I think it's just someone bought an S.U.B. and wanted it to give the impression it was one from California, but failed at that. Might be the seller, or might be a previous owner.
-
To my eyes it looks exactly like a Sterling by Music Man S.U.B. Ray5-BK/M. However, I haven't looked at Chinese knockoffs (Dasyatis sinensis) lately, so it might be a newer one of those as well. A any rate, someone is trying to fool someone else, even if it's only with "careful" wording and bad English. The term "S.U.B." is never used in the ad, and the word "Sterling" only in the title. Mucho piscarado! I'm sure he bought it straight from the Ernie Ball factory in San Luis Obispo, FLORIDA.

What's the biggest gig you have played?
BassTractor replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
As a bassist who couldn't play bass, I think I had an audience of 100 - 120. As a world famous classical organist, my largest audience probably was 6 or so. Nah, 3 more likely. -
It was often written on these pages that the BDi21 manual that comes with the unit was wrong. Would the file called BDI21_P0294_M_EN.pdf downloaded from https://www.music-group.com/brand/c/Behringer/downloads?active=Downloads also be wrong, or would that be the correct version? How can one tell? Yes, I tried the search function. I know it was mentioned often, but I still couldn't find it. Thanks!

Bass trombone with valves? Wattage? Brand? Congrats

I see a bad new thread idea here: who now despises the music they loved when they were 16 years old. I reckon it would be a short thread.
