Do the big name acts make cock-ups like us mortals?
BassTractor replied to leschirons's topic in General Discussion
In the seventies, Daniel Wayenberg, famous Dutch pianist, made a major cock-up when performing Johns Cage's piece 4'33" in a tiny French village. Wayenberg and his team drove this large truck/van/lorry into the village centre, unloaded a concert grand and tuned it meticulously before Wayenberg sat down and performed the piece for the villagers, who of course had had ample time to come and see this marvel - seeing as the tuning took some time. However, the egg timer used by mr. Wayenberg was not that dependable, and it rang too early, and so the piece only lasted 3'57" before the concert grand was loaded into the truck again and the musician and his team made a hasty retreat, leaving a bunch of flabbergasted villagers who, as can be imagined, had never heard so short a version before. ...and as you can imagine, mr. Wayenberg's hat after this cock-up contained the royal sum of 0'00". (Edited slightly as Ganymede whispered some stuff into my ear.) -
Don't know if anyone is helped by this, but just in case: If you have access to an analogue synth, it may be possible to build a very cheap solution with some types of pedal keyboards from old electronic organs. Electronic organs can be had for free ("collection only", you know), and some systems are built so that you can remove the pedals and have one octave that is still holding together, and not just a flock of loose components running away in all directions. BTW, many two-octave boards are built like this, but I assume most people will be after one-octave ones. Anyway, these pedals normally have big ass contacts, so its easy to solder stuff on them, and with mainly resistors one can wire these up in such a way that one can "send in" a voltage at one end and get out the correct control voltage at the other end depending on which key is being depressed. Very cheap and fully functional. This is strictly monophonic, mind. For polyphonic, you'd need some type of scanning - which I assume is more complicated and more expensive (never done that).

Chris Squire however is a different story. He walked in at my workplace one day, and was being very difficult about autographs. After some to and fro with the other people present, I got more and more frustrated, and finally it burst out of me: "Do NOT disturb while I'm teaching Jon, Bill, Steve and Rick, you bloody autograph hunter!" It seemed to put him into place, but to this day I feel guilty about having been so harsh with him. When you don't treat people kindly, who knows how they will start to treat other people again... There's a lesson there, I feel. . . . .
they totally cocked up my generation
NOW you understand? I've known this since '68. My parents taught me so... -
There was a limited 'Praise Jesus' version at one point, for christians who were offended by the Satan stuff hahaha
Must hurry. I LOLed so loud the neigbours have called the police. I hope I can have a laptop in prison. That or it's goodbye! The concept is so brilliant though. Buy a Praise Jesus, and be forever painfully aware that in reality it makes the Noises of Hull. Mindblowingly good stuff. Must say I'm much tempted by these. The adolescent fun is just too much. Problem is I've already got a perfectly good Myrtle Corvid (of course in its Safe for Services Lim.Ed. Leviticus 11:19 Hoopoe version).

Thanks for the info! The Hail Satan Deluxe sounds just like what my church band need for our Christmas Psalms concert series.

Not at all! Geoham responded! (couldn't resist) Idunno, mate, but in general, the idea of a single 110 is not really loved on BC. My knee jerk tells me to think that a single 110 would need to be in a different price range and built specifically for lotsa noise. That said, have you looked through the threads where the MiBass 10 is talked about? I'm sure some must have mentioned something about its loudness. Edit to note that since the MAG does 4 Ohm, how about two MiBass 10s, supposing they're 8 Ohm? One lift at a time and good noise to be had.

Ha! You've been found out, lad! Your name is Simon! Oh, yes. Don't even imagine I could overlook that! I enjoyed that from start to finish. Thanks for sharing! Is the pedal called "Abominable"? In case: great name!

I'm convinced it's a Warr, as it's very close to one of their models, while no Chapman I've seen comes close.

Oh, and what about Icelandic band Árstíðir ? I think they have been on these BC shores before. -
A dozen or so, and trying to sell most of it as this is nuts in my case: dildo horn, cricket bat, flower bass, 4 bog seats, 2 Stingrays, 3 CVs, Ashbory and unfinished Finder Jazz Bitsa.

has anyone heard of eve bass guitars. scottish luthier
BassTractor replied to dnarocks's topic in Bass Guitars
Not personally, but they are mentioned every now and again on here, for example: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/215640-eve-basses/ But I must say that for a British luthier, I feel they're not mentioned that often, so I'd guess few people on BC have one. No idea why. -

You're welcome. I made a spelling error though. It's either Hinn Íslenski Thursaflokkur or Hinn Íslenzki Thursaflokkur, depending on where you look, and not with both the "s" and the "z". BTW, on Iceland, the last word in the name is spelled with the Icelandic character "Þ", but normally searches work well when spelling it with "th". Here are some other names provided to me. Don't know any of them myself. Ale Möller Sofia Jannok Karin Kjellman & Ulf Grufberg Molly på rymmen -
any others you'd recommend?
My memory is failing me right now, so I've asked a bunch of friends somewhere else. They are bound to come back with some good ones. In the mean time: how traditional would you like it to be? Are you aware of Hinn Íslenzski Thursaflokkur aka. Thursaflokkurin? Their album "Thursabit" seems great. -
I'm sorry but I really don't get the point of Dirty Loops. It seems to me to be "music" made solely for the purpose of impressing other musicians. Sure they've all got impressive technical skills on their instruments, but IMO the song should always come first over technique, and unfortunately in their case it doesn't. Their output appears to be overplayed covers of pop songs that mostly lose the elements that made those songs catchy and popular in the first place, and their own compositions are weak in comparison.
Possibly surprisingly, even though I do like this song, I really, really strongly dislike when musicians do stuff for the purpose of impressing other musicians. This song however, does not give me that impression. To me it comes across as a musically felt travel through rhythm and harmonic development, and one that reaches me on an emotional level. I wouldn't have it any other way. Whilst this too may surprise you, to me the song should always come first over technique. It's a pet peeve of mine. In this case, the technique doesn't bother me at all. To me it's just a means to reach a goal, and that goal seems to me to be a musical one. I don't know the rest of their output, and had no idea this was a cover. To me this was just a new song. BUT in hindsight, I feel that there was talk about it in an older thread (but my memory is damaged, and I sadly do forget some stuff). As a result, the aspect of losing elements that made the originals catchy has escaped me. I don't imagine that I would run to a music shop and buy their CD(s) based on this song, but it was a well spent 3 minutes and 5 seconds before they started to lose me slightly. As I've relayed in a previous Dirty Loops thread, on the Dutch bass forum I myself reacted negatively against some Dutch music I felt was cold and a mere display of technique. I was however soon corrected by others who really enjoyed that same music on emotional, musical grounds. It made me see again we all have our different backgrounds, realities and viewpoints. I think I understand everything that has been written in this thread (can never be sure: English really is not my language, and I constantly see that people will not see or believe how central that point is), but still do not get what exactly makes Dirty Loops stand out among all the purveyors of dross that warrants three bashing threads in few months. They must be special somehow.
This is music for musos fundamentally, which does't mean that it's dross…it's just …erm…niche…
That may well be a very, very good point. There are lots of examples of guitarists' guitarists and composers' composers - that kinda thing. Solved! Dirty Loops is the dross's dross.

Thanks for posting! It's a band I like, but that I've heard little of the last decade. But you kicked me into action again: Must . Search . CD . Shelves. As to the lyrics, this is what LyricWikia says: Oh thou Ukko and thou Akka Weavers all of winds and weather Pray I do to a black man Raise a wind and make it whirling Raise a wind and make it whirling Make a gale that's great and growing Tear up tar stumps off the roadside Pull the pine trees off the lake shore Break the tops of giant oak trees Crash their robust roots to splinter Rise thou wind to blow and bellow Gust and gale to whirl all over Rise thou wind to blow and bellow Rage and rave, thou angry weather, Blow thou wind through more than six years Rage through summers more than seven Rapids rise to rush in torrents Aged waters to run swiftly And thou self rush like the rapids And prevail without a hindrance Pray I do to a black man Raise a wind and make it whirling Raise a wind and make it whirling Make a gale that's great and growing -
Why do effects pedals drain the battery when bypassed?

Ah! Well, I do hope it makes a lot more noise than these electric Up! ones that sneak up on you, the creepy besturds. Although something tells me it might. -
I always thought that forums were about opinions. Perhaps in future if we think something is awful it's best if we all say we like to please those who do. Perhaps there should be a sticky saying that so in future we all know.
Well:
Some people enjoy this music, and some don't. Sounds normal to me.
Three bashing threads in a few months remains special, and I still wonder what is so special about exactly Dirty Loops' insipid dross.
-
It's a well known fact that anything that is not Evan Parker, AMM, J.S. Bach or Krzysztof Penderecki is insipid dross, so why the harsh condemnation of exactly this insipid dross? The OP likes it. Several others, admittedly including me, like it. Some people enjoy this music, and some don't. Sounds normal to me. Yet, Dirty Loops almost seems to be kinda unique in gathering all the antis for shared condemnation with harsh wording. Also, this is the third Dirty Loops bashing thread in just a few month, and this time, the OP even specifically asked for opinions about the bass player. FWiW; whilst I do appreciate his playing, I did feel that in this track his timing could be slightly more laid back and rounded. We're talking details here, and I only wrote it so as to comply with what the OP was in fact asking about.

What? WHAT? W H A T ? ? You don't even recognise fellow bass player Malcolm Cecil? Me neither. Or rather, I did recognise Malcolm Cecil, but had no idea he's a bass player. The monster behind him, btw, is TONTO - reportedly the largest modular synth ever. IMS it consisted of modules and keyboards from a range of brands, necessitating they built all kinds of circuitry to "translate" the control signals between systems. Any self respecting bass player in need of some bass synth sounds should get one or two of these.
sorry BT for not being all things to all men .. were would we be without police like you? you got my point though.......sigh......thanks for the repair.
Well, I was just being friendly, and provided the embedding without making a fuss about it, expecting everyone to understand what had happened, and why I did that. If I understand your English correctly, you took it in a quite different way, which is a shame. It also saddens me.
