1.
And don't forget the other "cousin" - the Gibson G-3...
Good call that, and thanks also for the list! I'd forgotten most of it, but after your list now do remember how we used to look at headstock colour when one was on tv. No HDTV then. @GrammeFriday, also note that the G-3 has three single coils, so the three models are quite easy to discern from each other. With the different phasing options, the G-3 might possible rip AND grab, Idunno.
 2.
I dislike far more music than I like.
Just list them all, and I'll present them to my son the music lover. The older I grow, the more music I like. I started out, in 1963 or so, as the little boy explaining to the grown ups why they shouldn't listen to "She Loves You" and other beat music, and rather listen to Bach and Beethoven. These days, I can even muster quite some c&w and blues. Back on topic then: Hearing "She Loves You" always brings back memories about how I as a little boy explained to the grown ups... I was little enough that I could stand in the car, in the back but half between the front seats, so the grown ups could clearly hear all the wisdom. They never seemed that interested though.
 3.
Whenever I hear anything by Rage Against The Machine it always reminds me that I can't stand Rage Against the Machine.
I'll present this to my son the RAtM fan.
 4. Caravan's album "If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You", from 1970 or so, and still strong. The samely named single was backed by the following lovely little ditty in naturally flowing 7/8. Caravan liked 7/8... and 7/4 too IMS.
 5. I'm building a bitsa Jazz but with a wildly more modest outcome in mind (as long as it has two Jazz pups and Jazzy-ish electrics, I'm satisfied), and already that modest one will be more expensive than a CV, as each part is bought separately. But I like the work, so I don't care. Mine: (pricing IMS) Neck £100 Pups £140 Electronics £230 (John East Deluxe) Bridge £50 Strings £50 Body wood £20 or more (hardwood) Templates: £30 or so Pickguard: £30 or so Jack: ? A CV here costs £400 Based on that, I'd guess yours would be more expensive than that again, and maybe even more than twice the price of a CV, if you go the same route of separately bought parts, especially if the parts need to be exactly as specified. No idea about costs when following another path.
 6. Don't be ashamed, Hobbayne! You didn't write that song! BTW, I think you'll find there are actually up to a dozen other people on BC who've had adolescent fumbles in their then girlfriends' bedrooms as teenagers, and who only later turned to the bass guitar.
 7. Reportedly, the Bongo with only one humbucker will be able to come quite close to the StingRay sound. The others are said to be simply unable to do that. From my noob perspective, the Bongo with two pickups does not have that typical rasp, and has a huge, fat, very detailed hi-fi sound. Thunderous. I said noob!
 8. Welcome, mister Wardle, sir! Nice intro. I like your BH500... or rather. I like the BH500. Enjoy the site! Seems you already do. Bert
 9. Milk crate alternative: From eight bits of the stuff from the picture below, weld a little fourlegged frame "table" that will fit nicely over your cab during transport, and will protect its corners. Glue foam rubber on its top so the cab will not slide off during the gig, and/or make sure the cab's feet will fit within the frame. Can't describe it better with my English. Edit: have one of the legs somewhat shorter and weld a length adjustment screw thingie on it. I'm not too fond of the coupling either. Then again, I'm not preoccupied with the lowest frequencies more than once in a while, and find that most bands I've heard have too little clarity and too much boominess. 10.
I feel I could tell from the response of the speaker.
I believe that you could. My hunch says it's the laws of physics that command that different physical capacities must make for differences in sound - even if it's only about dispersion patterns for different frequencies, which could already be enough for an experienced ear. I can be wrong of course, but a simple model about frequency response is not what it takes to convince me otherwise. Somewhat analogue to this is the old story of people getting annoyed with the sound from their neighbours' "huge speakers" travelling through large buildings, and time and again it appears that it was actually small speakers that did that. I can't explain this phsysically, but that same hunch tells me that excursion paired with dispersion is a large bit of it. I might be proven wrong, which of course is only welcome.
 11. Seems legit to me. I'm a secret sopper too. (That said, I do sometimes forget myself, and sop in public. )
 12. Bonjour, Kennedy, et bienvenue au chat bas (oui, je sais ) J'espère que tu seras bien content avec nous. And that is the last of me attempting, badly, to write to you in Portuguese!

Quote
MultiQuote

Wow! I thought I was the only one who could do that! ...and here you are, a complete stranger and noob! Anyway, enjoy the site! Bert ("Bertrand" pour toi)
 13. [s]Cricket! What a great intro![/s] Crikey! What a great intro! Welcome, Scouser Nick, and enjoy the banter. Bert
 14. Welcome, Lownotelover! Well, we've already established that you are older than 30 years of age, and most probably a male person of the non-female variety. This means you're a grown up man. Now, grown up men can play Greensleeves and be done with it before taking their chihuahua for a walk. Seriously though, here on BC already exists a lot of advice. If you have the economy for it, you could get several books in addition to the online lessons. There's a thread about the good ones of the books somewhere. These threads tend to be in General Discussion, but I couldn't find the one I was looking for. One newbie thread I did find is here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/227362-how-to-get-started-on-the-long-road/ . Also there's always the possibility of hooking up with a BC member local to you, which may be the best fast-tracking available, as a person seeing what you do can spare you for many time consuming detours. Good luck and enjoy! Bert
 15. Demm! I felt sure twas about voting for BC compositions.
 16.
Should I ask why you ordered £300-worth of soap? A particularly dirty weekend, perhaps?
Use your cell, Mark! It was high-end soap. £150 a piece. (Notice this posh lot actually had a wheelie bin! )
 17. I'm reminded of the classic story of the nouveau riche man who wants a go at angling, and of course arrives at the spot with a superduper fishing rod costing thousands, a 500 quid multiplier reel, as well as the hookers, bloopers and floopers that go with it (yes, I know ). He's barely had his first cast when a young boy arrives with a thin rope tied to a branch, and a tiny, bent nail attached to the rope, and the boy has to witness the man catch all the fish...
 18.
Also, but I must investigate this first, there's a good possibility that a Kaoss Pad 3 (KP3) will do it, as it has sampling.
Now confirmed. It will allow you to hold up to four samples that can be looped or used as one-shot samples. So the next question is whether one of the cheaper, newer, ones also will do it. Edit: Yes! The Kaoss Pad 2 will record and loop a snippet of max 6 seconds, less than half of what the KP3 will do. My guess is the new KP4 will do a lot better in that regard, as the prices of memory have gone down considerably.
 19.
Sold a rare Unibass pedal on eBay recently with the original box. Wrapped it in bubble wrap, put it in a big jiify bag and took it down the post office. Arrived in Northern Ireland next day for the princely sum of £6:50 recorded delivery. No drama, no issues. It does happen folks.
Liar!
 20. Yup, whatever you go for, if it is to take a bass signal and loop that, then it's one of the expensive ones. That said, they are sooo totally worth it IMHO. The little KO-1 just has two bars (to put it simply), and no switching between four different set-ups like the Pro has, and no form of memory to store anything on. Switch it off, and you're gonna start from scratch the next time (...which btw is one of its charms to me personally: it's very much a "so-so-art-in-the-moment" thing, and ideal during commuting by train and the like due to its size (and its battery compartment!). I always have it with me when travelling, and even when fetching one of the kids (having to wait is not boring anymore). I love it, and will certainly not sell it once I have a K-Pro+.)
 21.
Mr bass tractor , you are a man of many talents. I salute you
Salute all you will, but you'll only be saluting a man of many lacks of talents. Thanks though!
The(almost) last paragraph , where you record a loop on the kp pro is what appeals to me. The cheaper way( the mini kp ) looks good but is a bit difficult , as you have to have your finger on it to record. Cheers .still waiting for someone to say "do it" "get one"
Ray atM, I love you like a brother, but hold your horses! I know this stuff is confusing, but that's not a KP-Pro (a non existing Kaoss Pad Pro), but a K-Pro (Kaossilator Pro) (which incidentally often is called a Kaoss Pad Pro by innocent bystanders). The Mini-KP OTOH is a Kaoss Pad, and will not do this. It will take the signal from your (somewhat amplified / stepped up) bass, but will not store the signal, and will not loop it. AFAIK, the only model to date that will loop what you play on the bass is the Kaossilator Pro and Pro Plus, but I must hasten to add that there may be a model I don't know that will do it. Also, but I must investigate this first, there's a good possibility that a Kaoss Pad 3 (KP3) will do it, as it has sampling. The Kaossilator app for iPads and the like might do it, but I guess it doesn't. I haven't seen such functionality on it myself yet. It's quite different (in a fun way) to the other Kaossilators through its visual access to what I'd call style bits (too much to elaborate right now). For clarity's sake, I own the Kaossilator (KO-1), Kaoss Pad Mini (Mini-KP) and Kaoss Pad Quad, and have the manuals to look stuff up should you need me to. The Kaossilator Pro Plus and the Kaoss Pad 3 are next on my shopping list, but I don't know if I can afford them this summer.
 22. The residential area bit is probably just because it's a small firm that has the administrative bit at home. They may have storage rooms somewhere else, though it is also entirely possible that they first order in when a product is already sold. They do allow fetching, by appointment and during limited time frames, so it looks to me as if this is a somewhat limited business. To me it looks like a person having an extra job - doing this in the evenings, but still like a serious one. I do believe the bit about them selling to schools and music schools. In fact to me it looks like they specialise in that direction, which seems logical to me. They claim that everything that you can see in the webshop either is in stock or will arrive very soon. That last bit seems to me to be open to interpretation, and might also mean that they think they can get hold of it fast (not only that it's already is on its way).
 23.
Btw; I still don't know how to upload you pube clips onto Basschat
No worries. That's quite easy: Go to the vid in question, click on Share under the vid, copy the code from the code box and paste it into your BC post. The forum software will automatically ad 'media' forum tags around it so it gets shown correctly when your post is read.
 24. Ah, I now seem to understand there's a bit of mixedupness going on. Ray atM, when you refer to a K Pro, you're referring to the synth Kaossilator Pro. (The effects unit of same shape and generation is the Kaoss Pad 3 (KP3).) When you refer to the Mini-KP, you're referring to the effects unit Kaoss Pad Mini. (The synth of same shape and generation is the Kaossilator.) My guess is now that you want to play the bass, and have a Korg effects unit connected to it. That can be done, but you'll appreciate that the Kaoss Pads excel when one is trimming their effects live, with a finger on the touch pad, which can be demanding for a bass player. A totally different way of working is to play something on the bass, and store that in a Kaossilator Pro, and then use that snippet in a Kaossilator loop. I'll try and dig up a YT vid from NAMM 2010 that demonstrates this use. Edit: here it is:
 25.
Kaossilator has no input function.
Well, the Kaossilator Pro has. BTW, for the uninitiated: Kaossilators are "synths". Kaoss Pads are effect units.
