I've been thinking of getting a GK head for some time now, and what with the imminent end of the Take It Away scheme I need to get my arse in gear! I originally intended to go for the 700 RB - classic amp, great tone. But I find myself increasingly drawn to the lightweight MB 200, which recently got a stunning review in BGM. Are there any GK users out there who can offer a comparison of the two? I am not really in a position to try either out but I have had experience with the 700 in the past - do the two amps make a markedly different noise? The boost facility is important I play a Spector bass, and make very loud, heavy rock/metal.
I'm sort of after both however the MB200 though a great little amp started to distort too much for my liking above 75% (gain) so I'll just go for the 700RB-II & not bother with a back up as that was the purpose of the MB200. I recently sold an older late 80's 400RB & that sounded great but again felt the 200w not quite enough & started to distort once you got to near full volume. I also play in a loud rock band so I don't recommend the MB200 as main amp but I cannot comment on the 500w models.
OK, so I've spent a hatful of time and money narrowing down what I'd really like for a bass, and I can't buy it off the shelf. Life's also too short (as is the money) to wait for a luthier to build it for me, so I'm going the bitsa route, which has so far proved to be very successful with the MM neck/SX/Schaller 3D I've currently got. I was all set for a nice birdseye Warmoth Jazz neck to go on my Wizard-equipped P/J-Bass, but I keep going back to play the Warwick Fortress (which some of you may recall from a previous whinge I can't love because it hurts my eyes to look at it. Not really, but I'll never love the looks, and you lovely people have convinced me I'm not terminally shallow in this). Ugly to my eye it may be, but that Wenge neck is juuuust great to play. Not specifically the profile, but the wood. I love it. Sooooo, the logical step is to trot off to the folk at Warmoth, and then bolt an unfinished Wenge neck with an Ebony or Wenge board onto a P/J, but I'm unsure if that'll radically change the tone of the bass away from the 'normal' (albeit Wizard-enhanced) P/J tones. I know it's bound to change somewhat, I just don't know how much. Anyone replaced a maple neck with a wenge one? Did it completely change the tonal character of the bass out of all recognition?
Not a precision but I've a Warmoth jazz - ash body/maple neck + wizard 84's & sounds great (got as spare for Geddy Lee jazz but ended up selling the Fender) then had a custom made jazz (by the late Paulman rip) this jazz has a very heavy amazaque (ovangkol) body & has a beautiful wenge/ebony neck + Nordstrand Big Singles .. sounds fab, not as bright as ash/maple but warmer/growlier .. if you're ever near Bingley come check it out .. sadly not getting used now I've gone 5 string .. anyway I think it's a nice combination you're after & think Warmoth parts are really nice .. not sure what they cost now as I bought mine a few years ago. hope this helps a bit cheers Si

Markbass Classic 610 cab - Amp traded - Cab traded
sifi2112 posted a topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
I'm probably really going to regret this but due to complete rig/setup change I've decided to put this exceptional rig up for sale .. no longer have a van so am going down the compact route so as to fit in hatchback. Actually no longer in a band or gigging (maybe just occassional jam). I have owned both amp & cab from new (still have receipts) have had custom (astroboard) flight cases esp made for them so are immaculate .. cab front just has butterfly locks (on front panel so no chance of vibrating when playing (loud)) & comes off easy. Total overall cost £3535 .. this rig has only been rigged about 4-5 times though used in rehearsals without a glitch. A BCer asked about how this amp sounds, this is what I told him 'difficult to describe the sound but when I went to Electromusic to check out the Ampeg SVT VR vs Hiwatt I also tested them against the Laney Nexus all tube head ... all nice but all big & heavy .. I noticed the Markbass in the corner & thought I might as well try it too ... well it just blew the others away at the time .. notes (harmonics) just seemed to pop off the fretboard when I just tapped the strings, so warm & musical but with that valvey goodness, very 'alive' sounding .. there was just something magical about it & I new that that would be the one .. a total no brainer (except the price) coz it almost half the weight & quite a bit smaller plus the micro management meant no worries if a tube blows it'll still work / re-bias etc ..' only negative I'll give this amp is the fan, it works great but it's the variable kind so increases / decreases etc but can be a bit noisy (you don't hear it at any decent volume tho) I'd consider trading for quality amp head, not really after class D & rather not too big but not bothered about lightweight, pref something that sounds good at low volume, prob + cash my way (will split also) or trades that I can sell on pretty easy also considered. Pickup from Bingley/Bradford...................price reduced ! .. now £2000 (open to offers) Half the weight of SVT (21.8kg) & quite a bit smaller .. goes down to 2Ohms & auto tube biasing (works even if a tube blows according to manual but has never happened) cheers Si http://www.markbass....etail.php?id=80 http://www.markbass...._allegato_1.pdf http://www.markbass.it/upload_area/files/f..._allegato_2.pdf http://www.markbass.it/upload_area/files/f..._allegato_5.pdf -
Not really sure about this as I've hardly used this amp since bought new couple of months ago but rig/setup completely changing so may have to go. Only thing I'd consider trading for would be a Gallien Krueger 700RB-II (+ cash my way unless it was as new) Pickup from Bingley/Bradford but can post due to compact size .. at seller's cost cheers Si SOLD
