Never had or tried one but there's no way I'd be without a big valve head.. Love 'em!
2. Some companies do make specific power amps for bass (no current production amps spring to mind but SWR, Ampeg and Trace used to) however, ones you've already looked at for PA will do the job just fine. All the usual suspects from the pro-audio world such as Crown, QSC, Crest and C-Audio are all premium brands with Crowns being my personal faves. Decent performance can be had a little further down the line from the likes of Citronic andPeavey also. Be aware of power ratings (and how they're achieved - I'll not get into that now), minimum impedance, speaker connections, input sensitivity and plus size and weight. Someone will almost certainly make one that suits your needs although it might take a bit of sifting through the pile to find the one..
3. I've recently had an old 15" JBL re-coned for use with my 60w valve head. It plays surprisingly loudly, I'd happily gig it despite the modest numbers. Loving the new / old JBL! I once gigged it with my old 10-peice soul outfit with a wall of old Trace speakers - well, not a wall but a 410 and 115..
4. I always liked and used the pre-shape too although dialed the 50Hz (30, 40 & 60 on 12 band) and 2K6 slider down a bit as I don't like that component in my sound. I miss having a graphic Trace; I'd love another 400SMX but since having the V4 back, I just can't justify or if I'm really honest, simply don't need it. Nostalgia could be expensive couldn't it!? Kind of agree about the 15" (1153 cab) having a sound of it's own too, bit of a hump low down in 60Hz region and an almost scooped midrange. I rarely used mine without a 1048H on top but I can't say it particularly upset me but I do agree with them being a 'coloured' speaker. Plenty of good advice here TwinCam, hope you get it sorted man.
5. I had a passive RockBass Streamer when they first came out and that was low on output requiring the gain knob to be nailed on an SMX to light the yellow signal LED. It buggedd me so much that I took the knob off and repositioned it so it read '7' when it was actually on ten..
6. I found that with that particular speaker / enclosure, I had to roll the 50Hz slider down a touch as there seemed a bit of a hump around the 60Hz area. You'll find that effect exaggerated when using the pre-shape so a larger cut may be needed. To reduce the metallic quality (something I hate and is not present in my sound) reduce the 1.3 or 2.6kHz or both sliders and then possibly add some 5K. If you're lacking note definition, try boosting the 250 and 660 sliders. The dual band compressor works over two frequency bands with a different envelope for each. The low part has a low-pass filter and operates to around 250Hz has a slow-ish attack and release times. A high-pass filter takes over above 250 and has much faster envelope times desinged to catch and release high frequency transients. The two combined are designed to give a smooth transparency to your sound. Too much however will be a squashed mess - I never needed more than 10 o'clock on the 7-band version of the compressor. A last and essential point is setting the input level correctly, if you don't, the compressor won't work properly. Early models will just have a clip light whereas later versions have the 'traffic light' style input meter. Set it just below clip (never mind the old keep the pre down and use the master volume, doesn't work the same on a graphic Trace) which may mean setting it above 7 but thats normal on one of these even if it does seem odd. Hope that helps. Matt
7. Thats a terrible shame.. When I first had my Warwick many years back, I emailed them to register my warranty and spoke of how pleased I was wiith the instrument and they replied very promptly and in a friendly manner. This was back in 2001 when they only made German basses and the range wasn't as vast or complex..
8. Why do we go round this same subject time and time again?

Same lovely Digico SD8, same lovely Lab Gruppen amps although the L'acoustic ARCS rig has gone, I was on what are still my favourite speakers - EAW 650 and the partner 2x15 subs. All went without drama I'm happy to report. There's a threat the SD8 might be for sale and to be replaced with an S21 in the next 12 months or so.. Sorry about the quality of some of the pix, I'm pretty useless with a camera..
10. I had a 130w model with the HF component on loan whilst my 712 Trace was having a replacememnt speaker installed. That was a while back - probably around '00. I was surprised by how loud it would play and liked the extra 'zing' the HF driver gave given it's modest size and power rating - I thought it sounded great. The weight was a bit of an issue although it was more of how that weight was distributed for me.. I have no desire to go out and buy one now but for what it was, I was suitably impressed. The SM pre-amp was pretty good too although I prefer the SMC models with the compressor. Thinking about it, I think they did do a BLX SMC with the 150w power stage and an HF component covered in green furr. I'll have a look in my old Trace catalogue..
11. On the subject of Digico, I'm using it again on Wednesday at the Victoria Hall again..Yay! I'll try to take some more pix this time..
12. Just been on the Digico site.. Oh my! Oh my!!
13. Best you can do is to mike it up.. There's no 'magic' microphone thats immune to feedback nor is there any sound system with an infinite amount gain before instability sets in but there are a few things you can do to maximize what you do have. If an instrument has a sound hole(s) don't put the mic in the hole as it will probably howl long before it's anywhere near loud enough. If I have to mic an acoustic guitar, I'll do my best to angle it slightly and have it placed by the end of the fret board sort of halfway between the hole and the board although this can sometimes be in the way of the player. Another technique I've seen used is an 'over the players shoulder' at a slight angle although a stand over where they're trying to play can be off putting also. Secondly, careful use of a graphic equaliser can help stabilize system and iron out dominant and resonant frequencies. You can raise the threshold of feedback quite significantly although if you go too far, it'll be worse than when you started. You have been warned! Lastly make sure your players and singing and palying near the mic - inexperienced musicians have a terrible habbit of moving away from them. Hope that helps. Secondly
14. You can buy a three pack of the Behringer '58 style microphones for about £60 or so.. I think they're called the XM85 or such similar. I have previous on these and they're actually pretty good on a voice but save yourself some greif if you do get some and tape the switch up as musicians will meddle! Personally, I like a Beta 57A on pretty much anything but you won't get much change from £120 for one of those. As for miking quiet instruments up in a noisy pub type environment with a small PA has any number of pitfalls - might be worh grabbing a few DI boxes to plug people in where possible. DI boxes can be had from about a tenner - I have a passive Cobra one bought from Terralec and despite being cheap it works great.
15. Thats what I liked the look of with the 01v96i, the fact it's compact and capable for mobile applications.. I'm sure prices will come down in time - LS-9 is plummeting at the min.. Lugging the 02R about isn't an option as it weighs 8 tonnes..
16. Forgot to mention.. I bagged another ADAT card really (like £25!) cheap off the dreaded ebay last week so I swapped out the redundant cascade card. I don't really need it but It gives me another 8 in / out should I need it in the future. Quite fancy a TC Unity card for it too..
17. Oooh.. GLD Sadly I've never had the pleasure but I thumbed through the catalogue when they came out a few years back. I may have salivated a little as I thought it looked a far more slick and 'finished' in comparison to the iLive setup. I've had a look round the iLive (T112?) when I dealt with the support band for 'Fozzy' as their engineer used one (I was on an LS-9 at the time) but felt a little underwhelmed by the british product sadly.. I understand that both of my existing consoles are getting a 'little vintage' but to be fair, I'm still happy with them for both live and recording mixes. With the Motu, I'm running up to 18 in and up to 26 out not including FX returns.. I'm also considering a similar setup for home rather than having to travel to work during the winter. A MOTU 2408 plus PCI card can be gotten cheap these days so one of those plus an 01V96 with ADAT card (not the i - they're still pricey) might be a winner.
18. Hi Mike, I looked at the Yamaha 01V96i too but all of the above are beyond my budget at the min. I've heard many a good thing about the X32 but there's something about it that doesn't float my boat - it's not because it's a Behringer. I know a couple of chaps who love them but for the money I think I'd rather the Qu-24 or even a 2nd hand LS-9 32 with the 16-way ADAT card. As I'm sure you've seen, I've had goood experience with Digico gear although I've never looked at the S21, I didn't know it existed! Maybe next year..
19. Sweet - 6x EL34! Lovely..
20. I use a little squash on my LMB-3 and good dose of it on my V4.. I like it!
21.
I've got to confess I'm a bit lost?
Have a look at the 'TC Electronics customer service' thread and all will become clear..
22. Top service! I always liked their products too, the old HD350 amp is a stunner.. Does the OP need to storm off at this point? I notice Tom has chimed in here too.. Ha!
23.
oh you have no idea how substandard your watts are. Tell you what ill help you out and buy your amp off you so you can buy something better? The things we do to help each other on here
Brilliant!
24.
Trace Elliot watts are not the same as any other watts.
So where do my 200 Trace Elliot valve watts sit in all of this? (Chuckles and watches from afar )
25. So, I stood my trusty Soundcraft 328XD down this evening to try something a little different and somewhat newer.. Allen & Heath Qu-24.. I'll talk about it in detail another time but in a nutshell - its's awesome! I'm very impressed with the ease of use, the sonics and quality of build. Sadly, it's not mine, it belongs to a mate who was kind enought to lend it this evening. The only reason I won't be rushing out to buy one is the lack of direct outs on ADAT or analog so live recordings are out of the question with my existing MOTU setup. Shame really as the rest of it really is ace.
