1.
End of the day though, tube pre + tube power = tone
Whilst I'm not an Ampeg user (I do like them but prefer a Trace) the above is very true IME
2. My Warwick Streamer LX5: It's been everywhere and done loads of shows with me since 2001 and whiilst I don't gig as much as I did back then, it's still my go-to machine.
3. As that the one that was on eBay? Is it still available?
4. Very interesting, cheers chaps. I think I simply need to have a go of one with a familiar bass and cabinet. Not that I'm planning to buy one of course, just need to scratch an itch and do some research or something!? Judging by the comments above, I think they're a bit more Ampeg / Hiwatt which was kind of like my Ashton BV300 was. Different from the V4 but again, not better or worse just different. I love the V4 and it's particular response through those little SWR boxes and will never sell it as its so comfortable and right but there's somethiing about the 100w CTM that keeps tappiing me on the shoulder..
5. Having reviewed recent threads regarding The Ashdown CTM models, I couldn't find anyone that had directly compared the two model series. On a different thread, I postulated that the pre-amps of the two may have been similar but Mr Ashdown suggested their CTM was more of a Dave Green / Matamp than a Trace / Fender design. Has anyone compared the two? I'd be very interested to hear if they have.. I'm not normally an Ashdown lover but the CTM100 really appeals.
6. Glad you found a cab that works.. Whether it a Peavey, Barefaced or SWR or whatever, as long as it works for you then that is all that matters. A conclusion is a conclusiion however that is achieved. Nice one, enjoy!
7. I have no experience of this model but I have used Matriix amplifiers before.. Ours was excellent and worked solidly without drama although it's been relegated to monitor duty for now since the arrival of another JBL MPX..
8. It might have ben MrTCat (I think thats right!?) as he used to be an authorised builder..
9. Interesting.. Teenage Kicks: The Undertones.. The first song I ever learned School Days: Stanley Clarke.. It's simply a masterpeice on every level Rio Funk: Lee Ritenour.. I needed my bass to sound like that Cut the Cake: AWB.. The perfect '70s funk track with so much feel Canned Heat: Jamiroquai.. This rolled me over, I had to play like Nick If I was to be really cheeky, I have to stick Kula Shaker on there too as this was a pre-curser to me going down the jazz / funk road as Alonza Bevan is an excellent and influential player to me..
10. I spoke to Wembly and to be fair they were quite helpful and knowledgable but couldn't do anything with my Goodmans. Shame you sold them, they're great cabs. if you ever need anything re-coning again, speak to Roy, he's the best I've seen. He does his own speaker range too which are like a Precision Devices on steriods. He also mods PDs to his own specs too. I'm sure he'd be able to do something clos to the original PAS drivers. Not to worry John shame they're gone but glad you're well.
11.
When the drums need PA, the Bass usually benefits from some PA too.
This is very true indeed.. I'd nearly always run a line into the PA for a little (or a lot of) support even indoors as long as the system was more than just a vocal setup. As for a single ten, I think thats probably a bit marginal whatever impedance / power the amplifier is running at. Especially outside. I'm happy with 2x 210 inside although I wouldn't expect it to go far outside without PA help. Maybe you could sell your 1x10 and get two 210 for a bit more sensitivity and more power from your amplifier? This would give you a bit more volume and help you feel like you're not thrashing the nuts off your amp to keep up.. Hope that helps a little..
12. Thats part of the reason Neil sold the SWR boxes to me, he preferred the weight of the eminence but somehow lost the sound. He's since moved to Markbass. Luckily, with mine came a number of PAS drivers so I currently have three spares for those 'just in case' moments. As for recones, I can highly recommend Roy Johnson (RMJ Loudspeakers) for unusual and / or tricky jobs. He'd probably tackle the PAS. I couldn't find anyone who would touch my old Goodmans Audioms but Roy did me a top job on both drivers installing freshly wound coils on new formers and making use of 14" (thats not a typo, the 15" Goodmans range were like a Peavey Scorpion which too is 14" cone) Tannoy cones as originals haven't existed since way back. Both drivers work great - he was concerned the tannoy cones were a bit stiff but I've had no problems.. He'll do the K140 and the 2226 when I get round to it too..
13. I've had my Wariwck for nearly 15 years and wouldn't change it for anything.. And I've had a Jazz in various guises since '98.. The current is probably the best passive bass I've ever owned so thats a keeper too! Very happy with all my gear at the min!
14.
I eventually replaced my peavey stack with an eden 2x10 mostly for the massive reduction in size/weight. Next step was an epifani what was even lighter, then a compact which was lighter still.
My SWR boxes are the lightest cabs I've owned although I 'heavied' them up a little by re-installing the O/E ceramic magnet PAS drivers in place of the Eminence Deltalites they came with. They're still lighter than the Peavey 210 owned by a mate. Winner! To be fair, I borrowed said 210TVX and it was great with my old 400SMX..
I used a Peavey 115 last night as the provided cab at a gig - very nice. It was the one with the Black Widow speaker in it. It was surprisingly clear, though I did have to up my volume settings - probably an 8ohm cab and not too efficient. But no matter to that, every band who used it got a great sound from it, and we all used our own amps with it.
To my knowledge, the BW they used for that was the 1502DT variant which was unique to the bass guitar cabs / amps. A lovely driver, I think it was designed to be a little EVM-L / JBL style..
15. From memory, the voicing of the Peavey wasn't a million miles wide of the SWR cabs I run now.. And i really love those little Goliath Jr's! And I think that was the winning formula for Peavey at the time, the voicing of the cab. If we wind the clock back and look at what was 'top dog' 15 or so years ago then SWR, EBS, Eden and the such like were popular (and expensive!) so one can only assume Peavey looked and listened and produced the cab we all loved. On the downside - as already mentioned - the cabs were massive and heavy but another issue I recall (and a couple of friends with the 2x10 and 8x10 variants) was that the drivers weren't that tough. The pressed frame Peavey speaker (no doubt a basic Eminence to Peavey spec) was electrically fragile (burned coil) and I replaced a couple in my own cab as well as friends cabs too. Would I have another? Possibly but the SWR are lighter, tougher and are in a more convenient package..
16. Oh dear.. This is going downhill fast and haven't we strayed somewhat from the original topic? I personally have taken inspiritation and advice from a number of pro players over the years. Two in particular of which I have massive respect for often suffer the same stage blights we all encounter especially in difficult / reflective acoustic environments.
17. Loved my 410TXV.. Big and heavy but sounded great so good infact that I sold my Trace 1048H as the Peavey was so much better in every respect.
18.
I ran K140 and D140's in a 4560 bin with some tops with bass and the sound was huge... Not the bass sound that you'd be able to use, mind, but good fun at the time.
Hey John, the K140 is still needing a re-cone but the D140 is running just fine.. Hope you're cool. Sorry for the thread jack!
19. Awaiting a response from Dr Decibel at Celestion. He's been very helpful in the past.
20. I've used an old AKG D190e for guitar cabs.. They look like something from a TOTP session from the early '80s but sound lovely on instruments. They do sound a little different than a '57 but I'd be happy to take one anywhere. Can be had cheaply from that auction site too..
21.
i always thought its best to concentrate on playing from the B string. don't treat it like a 4 string with an extra string. really get to know all those notes on the B string.
This ^ +1..
22. Did they ever do T/S specs for these? I did a search but didn't find anything.. I was wondering how one would react in a reasonably small vented box tuned to around 50 Hz but without data, I can't model it.. As above, I removed it from an old horn so I'm kinda guessing it will have a high motor strength as well suitable compliance for use in a small enclosure. That is assuming it was appropriately specified in the first place. Lots of assumptions and educated guesses here but if anyone has experience and / or data, please share as it would be appreciated.
23. Practice, practice,practice.. Eventually it will feel comfortable and natural. I'm not sure what style of music you play but you might find that playing your usual lines in a diifferent place on the fret board and making them more 'vertical' by using all 5 strings will help. I still find switching between Warwick (5) and the Jazz Bass (4) a little odd if i play them back-to-back although I suspect thats more to do with the string spacing rather than 4 vs 5. Maybe thats something to consider? Keep going with it, I'm sure you'll work it out in time.
24. Sony used to make the SRP-E300 - I use these for monitors.. 30 band graphic EQ 4 band fully parametric Delay on outs Digi (AES) and Analogue in Recallable patches All in a convenient 1U rack device. Each one has two channels so if you ran one into the other you'd get 8 bands of parametric and 60 of graphic..
25. I have a K140 however it's waiting for a recone.. I do have a D140 which is very similar and is lovely for oldskool sounds. As above, it doesnt have that super bright edge you might expect but it is a very clean sounding speaker.. If you get a pair, follow Bills advice and you'll not go far wrong.
