Good introduction. A big band will (or should) also have a rhythm guitar, which adds to the driving rhythm; and there should be less emphasis on beats "2" and "4" than in that video -- all four beats should pulse equally. E.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tlc0s2ROPOY

Two 8 ohm speakers in series is 16 ohm - so I think you mean parallel. Your power amp is 200W at 4ohm per channel - so let's say 120W at 8 ohm. Previously, each FOH speaker was getting their own channel, so 120W each. After your change, the two speakers will be sharing a single 200W channel, which is 100W each, which is less than before.

Auralex BabyGRAMMA v2 isolation platform £30 collected from Southfields (London SW19), or £35 posted. Edit: sold https://www.auralex.com/product/babygramma/ The idea is that it goes under your speaker cab to isolate it from the floor. I found it helps particularly on boomy/hollow stages. I used it with my Barefaced cab, which I no longer own. The size is 15"x15". I don't have the original box.

It's a monster! You should try it out - perhaps during a sound check before the singer plugs in, or any other time when you can nab a free channel. Let us know what happens.

Yes, an HD 10-A matches a Barefaced One10 (powered by 500W amp) - both in general volume, and quality of bass response. I play in a large function band which mostly has PA support and so use my rig just for monitoring, and found either setup can match a reasonable drummer. I ended up with two HD 10-A, for the occasional situation where I need to cover the room without PA support. (I also had two One10s for the same reason.) The HD 10-A are both up for sale if anyone's interested, as I decided to swap to using a single RCF 732A instead (but if so be quick, as also on eBay auction which happens to be finishing this afternoon).

Seymour Duncan SPB-1 pickup Manufacturer's website: https://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/vintage-p-bass N.B. the website shows a slightly different cover (with no logo). Mine look like this: https://www.thomann.de/gb/seymour_duncan_sspb1_vintage_pbass_pickup.htm £40 collected from Southfields SW19 (London), or £45 posted. Edit: sold A popular pickup choice for a vintage P sound. There is some light scuffing, which is hard to see in the photo (or in real life). Screws not included. Includes half the box, which is cracked. It will be packed well for postage.

White PJ body £33 collected from Southfields SW19 (London), or £40 posted. Edit: now sold I don't know the brand or wood type. The pocket and holes are Fender sized; a Fender neck was previously attached. Includes the P pickup and bridge seen in the photo. There are many marks, bumps, scratches, and dirt - please examine photos. Weighs 2.55kg on my cheap electronic scales.

J&D mini jazz bass £35 collected from Southfields SW19 (London), or £50 posted with the neck off. Edit: now sold https://www.musicstore.de/en_GB/GBP/Jack-Danny-Bass-guitar-JB-Mini-SBL-Sonic-Blue/art-BAS0007170-000 Short scale at 29". In overall good condition. Please note however that the electronics have been modified to have the pickups wired permanently in series - so, unlike a normal jazz bass, there is just one volume and one tone. There is correspondingly a hole where there originally was a third knob. The stock black pickup covers were changed to cream ones as in the photos. The pickups are standard full size, which is useful if you wanted to swap them out. It's strung with Fender 9050 flats. Comes with a Stagg gig bag of the correct size. Great weight at just 3.03kg on my cheap electronic scales.

Harley Benton PB-20 precision bass £40 collected from Southfields SW19 (London), or £55 posted with the neck off. Edit 9th Jan: withdrawn from sale https://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_hbp120bk_ebass.htm In fair condition. The top edge has been rubbed down (see photos), which is not that visible and (IMHO) makes it more comfortable to play. Volume and tone controls work fine, useable throughout their whole range. Upgraded with a tort pickguard. The top edge is slightly unaligned, and there is a screw missing because the hole does not line up (see photos). Strings supplied will be roundwounds (nearly new D'Addario EXL-170SL), not the flats in the photos. Good weight at 3.99kg on my cheap electronic scales. The balance is ok - not a problem with neck dive, but is not sublimely balanced like, say, a Maruszczyk.

The neck has position dots where the frets would be. Good weight at just 3.98kg on my cheap electronic scales.

Power Amp into Ampeg SCR-DI...? Or small Class D head?
jrixn1 replied to Misowaki's topic in Amps and Cabs
I wouldn't say it's oversimplifying; in fact, it's taking things to the logical modular conclusion -- i.e. the separation of the tone shaping and amplification stages. An approach which works if you don't want the in-built tone shaping that a cab provides, or otherwise happy to recreate/simulate that via a pedal etc. -
Yes, on my upright I have steel E & A and nylon D & G, which seems to work for me (but I haven't, and don't intend to, spend decades and £1000s trying out all the combinations...) I applied the same idea on my 5-string bass guitar, so my B & E are whatever roundwounds comes stock with a Yamaha -- I think it's D'Addario Nickels, 130 and 100. Then the A, D, & G are Fender 9050ML flatwounds, so 85, 65, 50. Basically I like flats, but found I lost a bit of definition on the lowest notes.

Power Amp into Ampeg SCR-DI...? Or small Class D head?
jrixn1 replied to Misowaki's topic in Amps and Cabs
Btw the One10 are great cabs which can handle many watts and go loud - if powered right. The BH250 and Nano Mark are, what, 150W into 8ohm. The PF500 would be 300W. When I had a One10, I used a Shuttle 9.2 which is 500W. It might be something to consider, depending on your volume requirements. -

If the idea to create the physically smallest possible rig, one small power amp is http://www.guitarsoundsystems.com/gss-baby-sumo-ampxlite-bass-guitar-power-amp-c2x21844846 -- but that costs the £200-£300 you don't want to spend. -
How was the crossover set?
-
Does the direct signal sound horrid because it is "unprocessed" -- was the Ashdown DI set to "pre-eq"? If so, then the bass might sound horrid to the audience as well! What about a pre-amp pedal like a Tech 21 SansAmp? As for controlling your volume, you get that set during soundcheck; or during the gig by catching the sound engineer's attention. The above would present (IMHO) the most "correct" solution i.e. avoiding having two separate monitoring systems running side-by-side. However, I appreciate perhaps it wouldn't work in your real world scenario for one reason or another.

One thing you would lose is the DSP of an active speaker. My understanding is that it flattens the response and protects against over-excursion.

I've not used one (and I think it was linked earlier in this thread), but the QSC CP12 is 30.3 lbs (13.7 kg).
