@julietgreen You mentioned "a few fast jazz numbers". Do you mean you are fine at slow or medium tempos, but struggle when things get too fast? Which particular numbers or changes are you looking at? Perhaps people here can give some ideas of how to find a way through, if that would help.

Is it the same (or very similar) to the Alto TS312, which is at the lower end of the market? I have not tried an Alto product myself, but my concerns would be (for any purchase really): 1. How would it cope when things get loud. 2. What is the build quality - will it still be functioning after a couple of years of being gigged? The makes which come up most on the "Interesting FRFR story" thread are RCF and QSC.

You still might be ok. This page explains it better than I could, but basically the human brain can extrapolate the missing information: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missing_fundamental For example, the lowest note on my 5-string bass is 31Hz but it sounds good through my RCF with its range of "only" 50Hz-20kHz.

It seems that the Rafferty is a series 2M fdeck. There is a table of differences here: https://sites.google.com/site/hpftechllc/home/hpf-pre. The main one is that series 2 has one 12 dB/octave filter, whereas series 3 has two ("The first filter has a fixed corner frequency of 35 Hz, and 12 dB/octave slope. The second filter is adjustable from 35 to 140 Hz, and also has a 12 dB/oct slope").

Whoever arranges (i.e. pays) for the courier is also responsible for sorting out anything which goes wrong. The seller might not want to take on the responsibility of that potential hassle.

Are there rules about the type of comments members are/aren't allowed to make on "sponsored" topics? I made a comment on the thread https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/327176-new-pedals-from-the-prof/ which has since been removed. I was pointing out some factual errors regarding their website. I suppose I wasn't overly cheery, but I don't think I was negative. I recall they replied saying they would address the issues. Anyway, the topic was renamed - https://www.basschat.co.uk/topic/327176-bassics-amplification-and-effects/ and those comments were removed. Just wondering what the rules etc are.

Help needed to understand Ohms with split bass cab

Which heads and cabs are you looking at? I.e. the make & model. Because things vary a lot between brands. For example, a brand new Harley Benton BB115T and five-year-old Barefaced Compact are both "1x15 cabs", but the Barefaced would completely destroy the other (and weigh half as much). Similarly, what was the make & model of your previous combo, so we know where you're coming from? The more information we have, the specific and better the advice can become. (The advice has been good so far btw!) Budget, musical style, and type of venue are also useful to know. Can the bass be put through the PA; and if not currently, can the PA be upgraded? Because then things might sound better to the audience, and you could use a smaller amp on stage. Some bands using good PAs might not even have a bass amp at all. -

Yes, I've had the other members of the band saying "what is that?" and "why is that over there next to the drums?" but it's not negative in any way - just the first time of seeing a PA speaker where they weren't expecting one to be. The way it looks (functional) is fine with me - although if they made a version with a cloth cover I would trade mine in for it. The closest I saw was https://www.thomann.de/gb/friedman_amplification_asm_12_active_monitor.htm but it's expensive and heavy, and perhaps lower spec than my current one. Yes, double bass sounds very very good through this! 😀

For a reasonable definition of "best", then yes! Would not have kept with it if I felt it was a downgrade or compromise.

For gigs when there is no PA support (like in my above photo): the RCF is behind me, providing bass for both the stage and the room the QSC K10s are just for vocals (and maybe horns) the kick was unamplified keys had his own backline amp However, typically we do have PA support, which is two QSC KSubs along with the K10s, in which case: the RCF is in front of me as a stage monitor (just with bass through it) everything for FOH goes through the QSC PA (vocals, bass, kick, keys, and everything else) (BTW... the K10s might in fact be K8s - I can't remember.)

My setup is quite straightforward - a Fishman clone for upright and an Xotic Bass BB clone for bass guitar (P bass with flats). Zero regrets about selling all my bass amps and cabs. FWIW those were Genz Benz & Barefaced, then before that Gallien Krueger & Hartke.

It depends on the gig. Mostly I do have FOH support, and I use the powered speaker as a monitor. But some of the smaller gigs there isn't FOH and so I use it as a backline. I actually currently have three RCF speakers - two HD 10-A and one 732-A - as I am figuring out which options work best for me overall. For example, last night I used the 732-A as backline at a wedding, doubling with a six-piece band (drums, keys, two horns, vocals). (The QSC K10 on the pole was just for the vocals). The venue was this place - it's not a huge room, but the doors were open like in the photo and many people were outside.

First, I've reduced the collection/meet-up price to £750. I live in south-west London, but I'm travelling to Oxford this Saturday, and to mid-Wales in a few weeks. Second, I'll now post this within the UK, at cost (£20) - but I'm only comfortable doing this if it's in a hard case. Unfortunately I don't have a hard case to hand, so I would ask the buyer to either send me one or I can arrange the purchase of a new one (at the buyer's expense). I hear things a lot better when they are in front of me pointing at ears than when they are behind me pointing at (as you say) backside. What is your PA - do you have access to try out using a powered speaker? I sold my bass amp (also a Shuttle) and cabs, and now just use a modern powered PA speaker, in front of me on the floor in the 45° monitoring position. If it's too sterile, use a pre-amp, overdrive, or cab sim. It makes it very easy and relatively cheap to experiment and tweak - unlike buying/selling cabs which generally have a baked-in/signature sound (it might be a very good baked-in sound, of course - the point being though that it's something you have no control over).

Do you own something which powers those cabs? I wondered if you could use that, which you already own, instead of buying a power amp.

Some things to consider: I've never used one, but it looks interesting: http://www.guitarsoundsystems.com/gss-1000w-sumo-guitar-bass-power-amp-c2x23791314 It might seem like going round in circles, but the smallest power amps are often found in class D bass heads rather than PA power amps. E.g. the above Tone Hammer 500 contains (of course) a 500W power amp - you can bypass its preamp and go straight to the power amp section by plugging into the "return" of the effects loop. What type of gigs are you doing? Have you considered selling the Barefaced and getting a powered speaker like an RCF 735-A? This is the route I went down.

Can you restring the original E to see if it makes a difference? That might eliminate (b) and possibly (c).
