I had mentioned to a friend recently that I was looking to get a fretless. He very kindly told me that their set this year doesn't involve any fretless so I shouldn't go buying one but could try his out. Take it away, use it, look after it, but don't buy one when you don't need to What a great and kind offer. So I picked it up and set to getting my eye in. It's a Mex Jazz with line fingerboard, (or fongerboad as they used to say on alt.guitar.bass) It's sporting some upgraded pickups, and that's it. Wearing some flats too. So, got my eye in this week and took it out today for a 6 rehearsal. The owner was there too as he runs the rehearsal facility. Had intended using it for a couple of specific tunes but ended up using it for the whole 6 hours. Great for the mellifluous stuff, but also just generally great for everything. The poor old Yamaha TRB5 sat unused on the stand. The band loved the bits I had targeted for the fretless and everything else just worked fine too. Anybody else just play a fretless for everything ?

That'd maybe be a step too far. Major believe suspension required, or just forget keys altogether and do the shapes and relative comparison method which I sometimes use. (Once I'm up and running, I think and play in sol-fa whatever key I'm in.) I'd need to think about this.

Both of the 5 string Jazz basses I have had were conventional BEADG. So was my Hohner B Bass V a million years ago. My recently acquired TRB5 came to me tuned EADGC. My first reaction was that I would have to splash out on a new set of string. Then I thought I would maybe leave it as it was and see how I got on. I'm quite taken with it actually. The low B is maybe a bit easy to access ordinarily and it's tempting to hit those low notes. Not having it, maybe makes me appreciate that a low E is far enough down and a D or C is just fine an octave above that. Having the high C without needing the 6 string feels quite liberating. I think I'll be leaving it tuned EADGC in the meantime. There's always an occasional possibility to drop down to DADGC if required. Fairly taken with it, it's a lovely bass. There'll be a lefty player out there who is looking for a TRB and can't find one. Ebay currently has a lefty TRB1005 which is maybe on its second or third time round the block with no takers at £560. If you want to sell, it's a bit less than that, even though that's a TRB1005.

As per The Rules, stating a value here of £350 on this. Looking for a sale or trade. Had this a few months now and quite taken by the 6 string concept such that I've arranged a deal on a Yamaha off a friend, it's a TRB1006, so this is now surplus. It's been my entry route to the 6 string world. Looking for a straight sale or a trade. If you're offering trades, I like woody stuff and Statii of all forms. 4 or 5 strings, all welcome as suggestions. If you've got something you want to move on, try me. Cash either way depending on the item. This here is a Spector Q6 pro. and it's in beautiful order. Neck's lovely and straight and it plays like a dream. Big deep awesome sound, it sounds utterly mighty through my Trace stack. EMGs with active, all 100% stock. Comes ina decent padded gig bag and I'm a capable packer of stuff for courier if required. Have recorded tracks on the soon to be released album by my band Comedy Of Errors and it's been great. My head has been turned by a blonde Yamaha, so this beauty needs a new home. Over to you for offers. Hopefully you'll agree it's not dear at this price.
