I've had experience of a pretty untunable B string before. In that case it was an old and utterly dead string which had zero overtones or harmonics left in it. Pretty tuneless thing with no music left in it.

Like this one in every way. Rosewood, pearly scratchplate, maple top laminate, translucent red, matching headstock.

Thanks to the Gumtree app on the phone, I found this beauty today. Local to the office, good price and the seller offered to deliver it to me for free. It would have been rude not to. Not a Stingray sound by any manner of means, it's at least a set of new strings away from that. But it does have a lovely middly burp to it. I like

To this eye, untrained in Musicman Minutiae, it looked identical. To my mind, I find the quality / price balance jaw dropping with these. I Will have one. -

I tried that very bass last week. It's a beaut. Instant Stingray. Had I not had my head turned by the Spector in CC and bought that, I would definitely have pulled the trigger on this instead. Their Squier Jazz Fretless is also lovely. Both were very well set up. This makes such a difference. The ones in GG were dogs in comparison. -
Thanks for the efforts of all of those who are fixing these issues. I'm reminding myself that this great resource is free and it is a Sunday, so thanks for all your efforts. I'm off to watch the F1 and will check in later or maybe even tomorrow. I'm sure we'll all survive.

I've given the twin truss rods a bit of a tweek this afternoon. Feels much better and I think I might be happier with the narrow string spacing than I thought I would be. It'll be a few days before I get it plugged into a proper amp, but so far through iRig and garageband, it sounds lovely.
For me personally theres no interaction, it's the same thing over and over. A band I used to be in wanted to try the backing track thing. And my argument, which won, was that having backing tracks defeats the purpose of having a live band which is what the singer wanted. You can't just call out another chorus if the mood takes, you can't play with false stops unless the backing track was made like that. And if a singer misses her/his cue it becomes very very obvious. I know it's horses for courses and all that noise, but if it was me in that pub I'd feel really cheated for watching someone play to some CDs, which is harsh but that's how it looks to me. Dan
Dan, you're 100% right, all spontateity is completely lost and yes indeed, if a singer misses their cues, it is immediately apparent.

Vintage AV4 any opinions (yep I know it's a cheapy)
JohnFitzgerald replied to Gilby's topic in Bass Guitars
Nothing wrong with a cheapy. A well set up cheapy will do everything you need. Anything more expensive is just vanity. Deep down, we all know that. Set up is everything, don't be scared of your allen keys, they can transform a bass. -
My new Spector being a fairly dark cherry colour seems to suck up the light. I tried taking pics indoors, but it didn't really work, outdoor light seems to have worked though. Hopefully these pics will be the right way up.

I'll fess up to once playing in a band that used backing tracks extensively. The functions that we played at they couldn't care less about my playing ability, it was all about the singing, so that's what they got. They got four great singers, two of whom played guitar. (Yes, I played guitar there.) Everything else was backing tracks. I was comfortable, I had done all of the backing tracks. If you play a wedding and get paid £xxx (3 digits) each for it, for playing a bit of guitar and singing, it's not the worst gig in the world. Conversely, I also play in a prog band where it's only ever cost me money and the level of musicianship is the highest I've ever experienced. I like both. One gives you financial reward, the other, artistic reward. You can feel comfortable with both, I do.

I think I can contribute to this thread. I am as of the last 24hrs now a Spector owner. Had been checking out lots of stuff over the last few weeks and finally plumped for this bad boy. It doesn't seem to photograph particularly well, but I've tried my best. Being such a deep cherry red, it really needs strong light and I'll need some daylight for that I think. Anyway, here it is. I've had 6s before, but not what you might call anything of great quality.

I've tried my best to like Ashdown stuff. I just find the sound indescribably wooly and unresponsive. I regularly have a play through a 6x10" ABM cab with ABM 500. It may be almost industry standard, but I'm afraid I'm just not seeing the logic. Plenty of woof, no mid, indifferent top. Not for me. On the flip side, a 2x10" Markbass wedge style combo that I used at Summer's End was everything I ever wanted a bass amp to be. Costs less too but just has a far more audible sound.
