This is what I try to do and I do agree, without a clip, you'll never know. I guess I'll have to try and sort that out. I guess it's as simple as continuing practising and concentrating on what I feel are the issues. A clip if I can work out a simple way of doing it.

I've long thought that I suffered what is best described as poor economy of motion in both my fretting hand and also in my plucking hand. It's something I consciously try to avoid, but it always seems to be there. I'm not even sure that I do actually do it, but it feels to me like I do and it often feels to me like it limits fluidity and dexterity. Obviously, it's only right that I offer up some excuses here. I'm left handed and play right handed. I know, that's no excuse, but there you go. Also I believe I have particularly long fingers. Never held Stanley Clarke back, but I'm sticking with it. Any suggestions or techniques for keeping the fingers limited to doing what they need to do and no more ? It feels to me like they move around more than they need to and I'd like to address it. Cheers JF

Gumtree "Fender" P Bass?
JohnFitzgerald replied to Fuzzbass2000's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Closer to a Lakland headstock. What that needs is a few quid worth of headstock decal with something like Lakeside or Lake District on it. Had it been the right shape, it could so easily have worn a Fecker Pretender logo with pride. -
Superb live vocal harmony processor. As simple as can be. Feed it a guitar signal and it'll provide 2 harmonies to the original line. Also has reverb and compression effects. Really, the only setting are where you want the harmonies. Lower or higher than the original. Only for sale as I'm trying to get the wedge together for another bass. Still boxed with the transfromer and in excellent order. Here's a link to a typical new advert. http://www.reidys.com/index.pl?submit=View_PLU&PLU=8727&utm_source=GoogleBase&utm_medium=Feed&utm_campaign=PriceComparison And a video demo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4-SYz3_BCA Best used by a single backing vocalist who then provides it all to a lead vocalist as it's much more real when used like this. £100 posted or £95 picked up.

FS: Squier Jazz Deluxe Active V £175 + P&P
JohnFitzgerald replied to JohnFitzgerald's topic in Basses For Sale
Ah, my mistake for not mentioning where I am. I'm just to the north of Glasgow. I have no problem in packing it properly and posting it in its own good quality padded hard case. This survived the cargo hold of a 737, so should be up to the job. The bridge is a fairly chunky thing indeed and standard fit. -
Which one to buy. Went for a Saturday morning soiree into Glasgow yesterday. The plan was simple. Guitarguitar to try out the Squier Jazz fretless which they had in stock and also try out the Mex standard Jazz fretless. The mex had slightly punchier pickups but had a slight neck discrepancy up arounf the 15th 'fret' where the G string choked as it passed over the line. Close, but not close enough. The Squier was pretty equal in terms of quality but was a truss rod adjustment away from being a player. Let's go round to Merchant City Music. Pretty identical Squier Jazz Fretless, but this one had actually been set up. Instant back pickup, tone rolled off Jaco vibe. It's why I'd buy one. I pretty much committed on the spot that this was "the one". Pending confirmation from The Management of course. Just at that point my mate unhelpfully pointed out a Sterling Sub which I hadn't clocked. Jacket straight off, I had to try it as I've always wanted to see for myself if they really can do the Stingray tone. Bugger me, what a sound. Instant Stingray. Lovely to play, bright punchy sound with super mids and as much bottom end as I'll ever need. So what do you do when you go looking for something, find it, but also fall in love with something else too. I suspect I know what some of you will say and I'm currently trying to move enough stuff that I can make this happen bit it looks unlikely. I can make one happen though, so which ?

Spoke too soon. Went to pick it up at lunchtime. The only thing missing was a pair of green tights and a quiver of arrows to wear whilst playing it. Yes, the neck had a bit of a shape to it. Who knows, it might well have adjusted iut, but then again it might not at which point I'm stuck with it. Walking away is sometimes the best approach. Next !!

It does a bit I suppose, if you squint a teensy wee bit. (I'm a Musicman novice, so had to Google this) Like this one. Now looking forward to input from McNach on all things OLP.

Always wanted one of these and managed to snag one at a very fair price at last. It always helps when your local Gumtree throws one up at a very good price and within 10 minutes walk of work. Some pics. price was a very fair, I think, £80. I'm sure I'll be conisdering P'ups and preamps soon enough.

Squier CV50 Precision: I love this beast... with a preamp?
JohnFitzgerald replied to mcnach's topic in Bass Guitars
The CV series does manage to capture most of what I would look for in a bass. Having said that, the Stingray type bass is rather calling me. Probably a Sterling Sub ? -
I occasionally look in on alt.guitar.bass but rarely post these days. (s/n ratio is atrocious). Anyway, one of the regs Derek Tearne posted the following. Great for critiquing your own technique and a use of a GoPro camera I hadn't thought of. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_vz-LgjF50
Blimey..! What a cheerful-looking bloke you are..! No, must be just an unlucky shot; it looks like a great time was had by all (including yourself...). Well done, lad; the show looks splendid. Keep it up.
Nothing unlucky about it.... I have one of those faces.

And a much delayed thank you very much indeed to bozzie for sending me some first pics of the band. I'm still an ugly bugger, but it's nice to have some pics at least. Thank you very much again.

What a fantastic experience. We may have left home 27 hours before the gig, but it was well worh it. We arrived to find a cracking lighting rig with moving heads and all the other fancy stuff and an engineer who knew his stuff. PA ewas a Martin line array system, Yamaha LS9 desk and a sound engineer who was oustanding. Setup was a bit delayed due to the demands of others being a bit elaborate, but we just got on, set up and were soundcecked in no time at all. It sounded great right out of the box. The actual performance just ticked off with no issues at all and the crowd were wonderful and receptive giving us a warm reception. Such a great experience and certainly ticked a few boxes for me. I feel humbled to have been a part of such a great festival.

Bozzie I've replied your PM. 12.30 start for us Sunday. Yes, I do feel quite fortunate to have landed the gig. Lotsa moves :-)

Mark's a bit of a tart when it comes to amps. I did however feel a wee burst of pride to see him using a Trace. In fact, I made SWMBO pause the telly till I got my amp head out and held it up next to the telly. She pulled 'the face' - "yeah, he's using a Trace Elliot. Yes, I know you've got one too..." Amp sheepishly put away.

Jazz bass Jaco pastorius : Tribute or Artist signature
JohnFitzgerald replied to Emanew's topic in Bass Guitars
I don't think any of us will ever sound like Jaco. None of the famous names who played the reconstituted Bass Of Doom in the video on youtube sounded like him either. What they did sound though, was good. There's also a fair bit of potential for many of the fine players on here to sound good using a fretless jazz. It's an iconic sound, a fretless jazz on the back pickup with the tone rolled off a bit. I really don't see the issue with any of us getting a hold of a Fender Jaco if we can afford it or either the Vintage reliced job or the VM Squier fretless if that's more to our budget.. I think we're all aware we won't sound like Jaco, but there's nothing wrong with buying a fretless sunburst jazz. I'll never be a millionth of the musician Jaco was, but I'm unapologetically having a fretless jazz. -
Very happy with my Squier Jazz V. As I often tell people, I also had a Fender Jazz V too. Both of them are active. Back to back testing, I was happier with the Squier and that's the one I kept. Totally happy with that decision. Ideally, I'd buy another identical one, but fretless. Unfortunately, they don't do such a bass.
