1. With apologies to those of you who don't do Facebook. You probably won't be abel to view thes images. The shop we use, CC Music in Glasgow, recently had Jack Bruce's Warwicks in for repair. Here's some pics of them on the bench whilst the work was being done. Very cool indeed. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Jimmy-Egypts-Guitar-Repair-Shop/223453997720476#!/media/set/?set=a.277817535617455.66209.223453997720476&type=1 The bloke playing the bass, John, works in the shop. I'll be sure to tell him I'm very jealous when I next see him.
2. My point of view, is that there is a most definite effort to turn up the desirability on Fender badged ones compared to Squier badged. As above, neck tints make a huge difference to the appearance. They could do it with the squiers, but I would suggest that they don't to keep the ranges apart. Same with scratchplates, there's a hierarchy up through squiers into Fenders. I love the squiers, but would struggle with an affinity because it's been so decontented as I believe the car industry calls it. Turn up the wick on desirability and you'll always find the price point for any given punter. My own price point, no mistake, is with the Deluxe Jazz five I have and I now realise it's just me. I don't think I'll ever not have one now. Hopefully the standard Squier J I've just acquired will be the same. If it's any help, the Mexican Jazz Five Active I had, I didn't much care for and preferred the Squier. Both bought new. As ever, buy the one you like and can afford.
3. Just acquired this off a friend of a friend. Can't beat a basic Jazz. The 5er I have is active, I'm looking forward to having nothing more than a passive tone to roll off or on.
4. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/167139-pair-laney-pa-cabs-l20-twenty-quid-working-100/ These are actually PA cabs, but you wouldn't regret using them as a dinky little stack for home use. Any trial welcome, you would love the sound, and for practice, stacks are always cooler than little combos. £20 !! Uplift only from Cumbernauld, or if you insist, I'll post at cost.
5. Pair of dinky little Laney Theatre 1100 pa cabs. 1 x 10 plus piezo in each cab. Ideal as a little vocal only or maybe vocal plus acoustic guitar pa system, also fine for sidefills for vocals to a main pa - work great for that. Also work admirably as a little bass mini stack for home use. Lovely for that purpose. I need to empty my gear cupboard to squeeze another Jazz bass in there, hence the sale. Uplift only from Cumbernauld or can deliver within 20 miles for the cost of fuel. £5 or so for that. They really do work 100%, but £20 is all they owe me, so that's all I need back on them - £20. If a picture of them plugged into my Trace helps you out, I can do that too, for all your ministack needs.
6. Adding to my own question. An interface that also give mic or instrument pre inputs woudln't be unwelcome. All my desktop stuff gets down via na old Soundblaster livedrive, so hardly the most up to date solution.
7. Oooh, there's a blast from the past, ADAT. Since ditching my ancient Tascam 3340, I've always recorded on hard disk but have experience of ADAT in astudio environment some years ago.. Now, however, I find myself in a position where I have a good excuse to embrace the obsolete technology which is ADAT. I'll explain. We've just been given (free and for no money) an original blackface ADAT machine. We also got a Studiomaster P7 16-8-2, but that can gather dust. Anyway, it's occured to me that I would like to rack up the ADAT with our live mixer (Mackie CFX12) and use it for live recording. This would involve direct outs from each channel strip right into the channels of the ADAT machine. What I would then like to do after capturing to ADAT is connect it via the lightpipe ADAT connection directly into a PC to fly all the tracks into Sonar for all the tweaking and fixing that we seem to do these days. So. Suggestions please for a bit of kit which would do the job detailed above. Had this machine not been given to us, I wouldn't be looking to do this, but right now we find ourselves in a position to do multitrack live recording for zero outlay. I just need a means of taking it tothe next level and into the PC. Cheers JF
8. The rehearsal room we use (new facility in Cumbernauld, check it out http://www.amrehearsals.co.uk/index.htm) has Ashdown stacks in all 3 rooms. They're, mmmm, ok is all I would say. I think I've said this previously, but I've tried to like Ashdown stuff on so many occasions. Compared to my old Trace head and Peavey 410 cab, the sound just isn't there. Enough volume, but really no clarity. Regardign EQ, I could easily be convinced that the tone controls aren't actually connected to anything. Through any three of them, my Squier Jazz sounds pretty dull. Through the trace, there shed loads of snappy top end. As I said, I've tried to like Ashdown many times, to the point of having owned 3 or 4, but for me it just hasn't worked.
9. I'm a trace user of old and still am. Whilst they are known for that pre shape sound along with the smiley face, they can certainly do other things. I go for a much more middly sound nowadays as I have become more educated as to what actually works. You have to remember that before Trace Elliot came along, other than an SVT or an Acoustic, bass amps in general were pretty grim, certainly the ones that were generally available to those of us on an average working bloke's budget. Then Trace came along with these amps that put the sound right out there. Anybody who had to wrestle with an old HH / Carlsbro / Ohm / Laney / insert mediocre 70s-80s amp here, will know what I'm talking about. Yes, we have much more choice nowadays and lots of very capable amps, but other than the Acoustic or SVT, which you just didn't see anywhere for sale., your local music shop was full of garbage until Trace came along. I'm hesitating to use the phrase 'game changers' here, but.... Regarding weight. Yeah, I'm with you regarding the cabs, undoubtedly. Regarding the amp head, sorry but if you can't lift an AH-whatever, you need to see a doctor. My AH150 weight no more than my bass in its case. Anyway, as soemone said previously, each to their own.
10. FFS Lads ! (With the exception of all you techy dudes who do all this stuff for a living.) Please don't tell my old 150W Trace head that it's only 150W or I'm screwed. For as long as it doesn't know that it's 0nly 150W, it gets on fine. Maybe the fact that I don't wind shed loads of subsonic rumble and smiley faces onto the graphic helps, I don't know... My sonic space, right above the bass drum, below the guitars helps. They've also had all the bottom tweaked out fo their sound too. There I am, 150W, Above the bass drum, below the guitars, in my space. 150 watts, plenty. I must be doing it all wrong.
11. The 4 x 10 has been plugged in at home once, just because, well, you do, don't you. Just one at least. My little diddy Carlsbro practice amp is more likely to see service is a plug and play home amp. I have however used my aH150 along with the two 1x10s I got recently and that's a lovely little home stack, although the amp's a tad wide for the cabs. Volume wise, with the pre amp set just right, the post gain is useless. On the detented volume knob, 0.5 out of 10 is as high as you can go. Little point about it all really. If I'm being honest, if / when the gigging stops, the gigging amps will be gone in a flash.
12. Is there anybody in there ?
13. Awesome sounding Peavey 410tx. Fabulous crisp sound and built like a tank. Cerainly not in brand new condition, but most presentable indeed and you wouldn't want for any spare capacity. Great cab. Photos in aminute. A bit weighty shall we say, but hey, I'm asking £50, whaddya want already !! Parcelmonkey tells me that I can have this couriered for £17.39, so to allow for some packaging, materials, it would be £20 to courier it which seems like the bargain of the decade to me. That's based on a packed weight of 45kg. The cab is 42kg. It would be delivered by night freight. If you did buy and wanted it couriered, I would need a few days to get this all sorted, but we'd get there in a week or so. Photos shortly. ----------------------------- Stuck it on ebay and it sold in about 12hrs. Pick a selling price, not an aspirational price and give the buyers reasons to buy and away it goes.
14. Hello, hello, hello...... (Bump is just so boring.)
15. That is a keen price. I got, I think, £350 for mine 3 and a bit years ago now.
16.
Gorgeous!
Isn't it just...
17. As per the pics below. Lovely order throughout and plays like a dream. Need to get my fretless groove on, hence the sale. If you have a Squier VM Jazz fretless that looks like the twin of this, I would be delighted to speak to you about a trade / swap. Otherwise £175 plus P&P. More pics on request.
18. Honest answer to an honest question ? I genuinely think you're a little bit strong with your pricing. I love Trace gear and it's been my first pick for most of my playing career and still is. I just don't think it does that strongly on the used market. Sorry if I'm wrong or not what you want to hear.
19.
It's both, as are all speakers, depending on frequency and how far away the listening position is. Practically speaking all electric bass cabs should be considered point sources, save maybe a pair of 810s stacked vertically.
A pair of 8 x 10s stacked vertically.... Now there's a thought to dwell on. Provided you don't have to move it.
20. So, I said to SWMBO earlier. "You might want to go out for a bit, I want to try these little cabs to see how much noise they make and whether it's any good." So, she did. Stacked up, like in the pic, I fired it up at the same level as usual. Pre just on clipping on the Trace, post on 2.0 Certainly didn't produce as much bottom end as the 410tx, not that it should. Half the drivers, less than half the cab size. usable sound ? Too right it is !! If I might be churlish enough to criticise the Peavey 410, it's got a bit of a hole in the nice audible bit of the mid range. Plenty of the top and bottom, but a tad lacking in the mid honk that I love - the bit of the spectrum that pokes out above the bass drum and below the guitars. These little £20 boxes address that issue quite nicely. I'm going to try this hooked up to the PA and see how I get on. Wouldn't fancy going out with them and no PA support, but they might just be enough for me with the PA doing the real work. Might be just the job for my aching bones not having to lift that Peavey cab any more, rich sounding as it is. I'll be sure to tell you all about it when the inevitable happens and it all goes 'orribly wrong.
21. I don't think the Ampeg will begin to be a replacement for your Trace. Completely different sound IMHO. I'd be looking out a used Trace head. My AH150 (immaculate) cost me £79.99, delivered. Why have anything else ?
22. Alex We're very much a band that likes to keep backline levels sane and let the PA do the heavy lifting. That's why I don't need monster sound levels. As I said previously, my amp on 1.5 - 2 through the Peavey moves all the air I would want. I would hope that means I've got a fair bit of headroom there. Using your yardstick above, it seems that I may have somewhere between 4-6dB of headroom. Must go and look at the wieght of the Barefaced cabs again.
23.
Probably two of the cheapest basses in the thread but i love 'em. My two Squier's, now upgraded and im very pleased with how they turned out. The Jazz is pretty much stock other than Wizard 74's and a Gotoh 201 bridge, the P only has the body remaining from the original CV, it now has a Lakland JO neck, Fender 62 Original (RI) pup, Gotoh 201 bridge and new pots and wiring. Not on the couch but leaning against it, i hope that counts.
