1. Not strictly a gear pron post, but maybe there are some people out there who like this sort of stuff just like me. Here's my little corner of the stage. Last night, was very tight, hence the strange positioning of the bass cab, but there's a PA to make sure all the loveliness gets out there so it was onyl for personal monitoring. Anyway, my domain with a short description of what's going on here. Crappy mobile phone pic on poor light. My Trace AH150 + 4x10 cab. On top, amp rack with a pair of Crown XLS602 power amps. 1.2K each. Behringer Crossover. Sennheiser wireless receiver. Off to the side there, Mackie, CFX 12. It's not very handy haivng the same setup whether you're doing a town hall or a tiny pub, but you use what you've got I guess. Out of shot are. My Squier V string Jazz active. 2 x Marshall 100 watt half stacks with angled 4x12 cabs. Les Paul Goldtop / Les Paul Traditional / ESP Les Paul / Vester Tele (my favourite.) Roland TD12. This use a total of 4 channels on the mixer. 2 stereo pairs. Beats mics. Logic System PA. There you go. Maybe a slightly strange post for the gear pron section, but maybe there's others out there who like this sort of nonsense too.
2. That's several generations newer than ye olde TNT though, isn't it ?
3.
Interesting that while the Yanks say "Aloo-min-um" and we say "Aluminium", they say "Nee-oh-die-nee-um" whilst we say "Nee-odd-mee-um".
Really ? Nee-oh dimmyum here Here is Scotland admittedly. We proably invented it...
4. I have to say, my approach to this is just to keep the internal metronome running all the time. Maybe I take it too far and I know this will sound ridiculous, but from the minute I wake up to the minute I fall asleep, I have a weird sort of internal metronome that pretty much never stops. If I'm sitting still and not using my hands for some other purpose (leave it ! ) I'm probably going to be tapping out a rythm. Drumming away. In my head, I'm sub dividing each beat into four semiquavers the whole time. There's always a rythm in there. Frustrated drummer ? Maybe. Before playing any other instrument, I played some drums at an early age and have certainly never forgotten it. Being the bass player, I see my role in the rythm as being just as important as the drummer's and want to influence it just as much as he does. So, I keep the meter going in my head the whole time. This sound ridiculous, I know, but's that's my approach. I didn't set out to do this, but it's what I've always done. Clearly, this approach won't work for everyone, but it does for me.
5. I just got rid of an old TNT 130. It must have been like lb/ft compared to N/M. Only 130 of those watts, but each one was a full sized time served full fat watt. Could hold its own anywhere. Having said that, it was very much an old school sound from the days before we had the good sounding amps we now have. I know that there are old and good amps, but once you take out the SVT and the B15, a lot of the old stuff that we could all afford when the TNT was current was pretty naff sounding. HH Bass Machine / Carlsbro Stingray anyone ? The TNT had a fairly pronounced lower mid clank and no real crisp top end to speak of. Not a bad sound as such, but not a great sound either. Workmanlike and dependable, as ever with Peavey though. Maybe I just discovered the Trace sound and never moved on.
6. Have you ever tried a Carlsbro Cobra 90 Keyboard Combo ? 90 watts, 15" speaker. Tweeter. Sound glorious. Really works with acoustic guitar too. Keyboard amps are mini PAs and I love them. Having said that, I'm loving my new to me Peavey 410tx. Weighs a fair old bit, but the sound. Oh lord, the sound.
7. Andy Top bloke. I now need to work out how to snag the right veneer.
8. Just like this one... If only. Cocobolo just looks so luxurious.
9. Yeah, that's definitely the way I'm going with this. I always but always feel drawn to anything with exotic looking natural wood finish, especially when it is so striking. Just dreaming, but in keeping with my ongoing Alembic fantasy, would you think that Cocobolo or anything similar might be available in these veneers ?
10. You're a gent sir. Duly noted and having a gander as we speak. Your Ibanez GSR200 on your website. I've just had what I believe the victorian referred to as a "crisis" of the trouser area. THAT'S what I'm talkin' about baby !! Sorry, turned all Nooyork there.
11. Just found an interesting link. http://www.projectguitar.com/tut/veneer.htm
12. Yes, you're quite right. Only once the finish is off can I consider the way forwards with this one. Let the sanding commence then.
13. McNach. You're right, the BC212 really is very very light and transportable. A big consideration. Enjoy your new cab.
14. You know how you sometimes think you've snagged a bargain ? But you keep shtoom about it until you've verified you haven't actually just bought a pup ? I think I'm clear now, because it arrived this morning and checked out A ok. Trace Elliot AH150-7 in green rat fur. Absolutely imaculate with not a mark on it. As the pic below will hopefully show. Saw it on ebay, being sold at - of all places - a cash converters. Price including shipping ? £79.99 It's fair to say I'm a bit chuffed. Through my recently (yesterday) acquired Peavey 410tx (thanks McNach, you're a star) it sound gorgeous. Sorted
15. In thinking about a response to this thread, I realised I had forgotten an amp which I had. Amp wise, I've just got a new one, but read on. From around 1986 or so to around 1996 I had a Trace Elliot AH250 and either a 1048 or a 1518. Loved the amp head and was happy with either cab. Then in 1995, I decided I was giving it up for a bit and did so. My replacement in the band inherited my gear and I got some kit off him. Fast forward to 2001 and I sort of got back into it again. Had various Ashdowns, a Trace Commando ( I think I need to add that to the list) and an ebay special Peavey TNT which I paid £40 and ultimately had for about 6 years. Sold it last week for £80 and promptly put the cash into another Trace head which just arrived this morning. Been fiddling with it this morning and as soon as I turned it on, there it was. The sound. Straight away, no messing. So, in response to the question. Yes, I'm happy. But only because I eventually returned to the place that I never should have left in the first place.
16. Agreed. The opening notes from Edith and the kingpin on shadows and light are just glorious.
17. I've just remembered some wot I forgotted. Before the RB924 Squier Jazz Squier Precision. These would both be 1983. Yeah, I got rid of early Squiers too... Kay through neck bass thing. I was heavily into Alembics at the time and this was as close as it got.
18. Per above. And have now got hold of a lovely Peavey 410tx off Jose too. A gent as ever. Thank you very much.
19. Lots of presence north of the border, I see. Good stuff
20. I like the Stingray style control plate and had already considered that. As you rightly say, doesn't help with the other issues. Might do both. A colour not standard to Yamaha and a control plate might look cool. Regarding the shape and manufacturer of the plate, I'm handy with CAD and as luck would have it have a friend who has a waterjet cuting machine. I'm thinking a bit of thin mirror finish stainless, cur more like a scratchplate, maybe. I like what Bud Lecompte does with this sort of stuff, so may go for that approach. Black bass with metal scratchplate, only with a modern body shape. A modern take on the classic Lynott homage.
21. The back story. Mate buys his son an RBX170. Passive, two volumes, one tone. P/J pickups. Plays absolutely fine. Son plays bass a little, he's just learning. Gives up. Decides he likes a small sherry more than playing bass. Comes in one night having had one too many sherries and the bass is sitting in the corner unloved. Result. One rather compromised bass. How very rock n roll...... I now have it after dad reclaimed it. No money changed hands. What to do ? It's really about repairing it because it's a viable bass. Nothing more. I'm confident that the crack in the top is largely confined to the finish. Most likely, I'll remove all of the finish, refinish it and do a repair to where the pot was smashed out. Thin liner to the underside of the control cavity and surface finish on top. Thoughts anyone ? Daft ones welcome. Or alternatively, feel free to have a rant about the daftness of youth.
22. No worries. Apologies if I appeared a little strident in my opinion there. I'm really not like that, honestly.
23. Last gig I did was for a biker rally. If anybody likes their volume, it's these guys. I used my old Peavey TNT. I tend to go as flat as possible on EQ, as I believe that the mid is where my voice is and don't want it lost. With the TNT on about 1/3 on the post gain and half on pre, it was way more than enough stage volume with the PA doing a bit more heavy lifting. With my old Trace AH250, I don't think I ever used that at more than 1/3 volume. We didn't use a big PA back then, it was vocals only, so backline had to do it all. Both of these stage volumes were enough to convince you that there was some pretty convincing bass volume going on there. I'm getting to the point, honest. I don't think I've ever ran any amplifier flat out in my life and if the gig called for that sort of level, I reckon I would be looking to make my excuses and call off. Seriously, are you looking for Lemmy equaling stage volume here ? If the amp can make 400 actual watts and the speaker, I would reckon you'll be backing it off wayyyy before full tilt. Having said that, I've tried supposedly 1000 watt amps which couldn't begin to approach the sheer grunt of the old TNT or my old AH250. Still waiting on the new one arriving, fingers crossed it'll be as good as memory tells me it will. We have a 2.4KW Logic System PA to do the real work
24. I have pics of all the old Statii somewhere. If I can dig them out of the old hard drive, I might just do that.
25. Ah, the Westone. It was a thunder 1A. Just like the one in the adverts with Henry 'king thumb' Thomas throwing shapes. Mine was blonde ash coloured. Active electronics and a single 'P' type pickup. Then I decided that I wanted a Jazz pickup so chiselled out the body to fit one in. Badly. Then decided I wanted it to be a darker colour so bought some stain. The Westone didn't like this. The wood was as hard as nails and sealed so well that the dark stain just sort of fell off. Then I decided I wanted it to be fretless. Hey things were going pretty damn well at this point, I had to keep going ! So, I removed the frets and that was it finished. Badly fitted J pickup. Finish falling off. Nae frets. Finished !! I left it in a mate's house and never went back for it. Thankfully, when I spoke to him a few years later, he informed me that he had chucked it in the skip since we last spoke. I like to think that he cut it up into little bits to put it out of its misery first. I thanked him graciously for that and we never ever spoke about it after that point. What's it called ? Cumbersnecky !! Actually, just outside Cumbernauld. But, that's close enough.
