Received the fretless today from Koval123. It's a rather nice match for my existing six string fretted. A bit chuffed !! These are sold as Fame, through Musicstore.DE but are old model Mayones BE Exotic, made in the Mayones factory in Gdansk.

Just received a beautiful Fame / Mayones from JK. Excellent communications throughout, the bass was packed impeccably and it arrived in prefect condition, exactly as described. Highly recommended !!

Flamed Bubinga ? (One for the luthiers ? )
JohnFitzgerald replied to JohnFitzgerald's topic in Bass Guitars
I don't know if it would be called flamed, but I have an example of that sort of figuring in bubinga hanging on the wall at the other end of the room. A 1987 Thumb. Not as extreme as yours but still quite unusual.
Unusual in a lovely way, I'd say. -
Flamed Bubinga ? (One for the luthiers ? )
It's definitely a stunner! I wonder how the re-branding came to be. Was it an old Mayones that didn't sell, or was it commissioned directly to be branded Fame? And why are they so reluctant to talk about it?
I wouldn't know ho it came to be, but suspect it's been commissioned to be made as Fame. I don't that they're reluctant to talk about it, as such, however, you really won't find much online other than a comment that they're made in the "M Guitars Manufactory in Danzig". My own suspicions are that if you're making instruments for someone and they're selling for really quite a bit less than your own brand, you'd keep relatively quiet about it. Just my thoughts. Here's a pic from Mayone website from the 2005 NAMM show - looks the same to me, with the exception of the pickups. -
Being on the same bill as Yes is a different matter. I'd have happily done that one for free - free gig with backstage pass init?!
Backstage pass, fed all day, backline rider, experience of a lifetime. My rig was an SVT classic, as is the standard for these things. Backstage, there was a spare SVT - identical to the one on stage, just in case. And had the unimaginable happened and the spare had broken down, there was a third identical SVT classic stack. Just in case...

Flamed Bubinga ? (One for the luthiers ? )
Shedua seems closer in colour. Don't know if it's ever used for solid bodies, though. How heavy is the bass?
I think you have it spot on. It's now decribed as Bubinga, but 'was' described as Ovangkol. I'ts 100% Quarter sawn Ovangkol. Thank you !! (Mayones won't tell me anything. They really don't say much at all about making these). -
Are you unhappy with it?
Lord no, I'm delighted with it. I think I won a watch as I was expecting something far more plain looking, No, I'm just curious as to what it really is. If it's flamed Bubinga, that's fine. -
Bb. A string first fret. You cant tell me that's not a pukka note.
This is the best note ! The Chicken, played in Bb works best and it suits horn players down to a tee. Makes it easy to play all of those jacoisms too.

I did a gig earlier in the year. My band played, then another two other bands played, (David Cross, from King Crimson 0 then Ray Wilson) then ARW played. ARW are Anderson, Rabin and Wakeman. They now go out as YES. There would have been around 5,000 there. What's the least you'd have played our slot at such a festival for ? Or if I might ask that another way. If we'd pulled out with a week to go, and you were offered the slot, for zero fee, how many of you would have taken it ? All I'm saying is, the pay or reward doesn't always come in the form of money. (We consider ourselves massively fortunate to have had the opportunity, so please don't misunderstand me). I'm well aware that this is different to the original post, but I'm talking about the circumstances in which the actual cash fee kinda doesn't matter any more.

I've had this bass a little while now - around 6 months. From day one, I always thought it looked very pretty, but now I'm looking at it rather closer. When I ordered this, I knew 'some' of the details. Exclusively from musicstore.de or DV247, the same business in reality, it's a Fame Baphomet 6. There was no chance of viewing due to it coming mail order, and the pics on the website show some quite plain wood. Described as made in the "M Guitars" workshop in Danzig, that's Mayones in Gdansk, Danzig being the German name for Gdansk. In reality it's an old model Mayones from around 2003-2005 Anyway, it arrived, and it was stunning, much more highly figured than the stock photo. It's described as Bubinga, but that looks like flaming to me. Is there such a thing as Flamed Bubinga ? Details are thin on the ground. I can find one reference to such a thing on a Benavente bass and not much else besides that. Any thoughts ? - This is mine. Front view Rear view

It sounds decent, yes. I end to avoid the volume arms race, this give it a little more authority and is more audible at close distance, rather tan just warming your ankles..

Already had the Markbass JB Player's school combo and figured I'd snag an NY Blackline 151 cab to go with it, whilst they're still available. It is an identical looking cab after all and I'd hate to not be able to get the matching cab because I couldn't make my mind up. I'm please how it's turned out. Both modern and old school at once - 2x15" !!
£60! I never find bargains like that!
Spotted it on Gumtree, down in Kilmarnock. The lad had bought it new, stuck some flats on it, and really didn't get on with it. I stuck new rounds on, tweaked the truss rod to suit, and there it was. That sound. My only complaint is this. Obviously, these look cooler with a more 'live in' look. I'd never intentionally 'relic' an instrument, but I do sometimes leave it lying around in the hope it might pick up a little bit of 'life' about it. Regrettably, the finish is so hard and thick, it still looks mint.

I have a Harley Benton JB40-FL, the poor man's bass of doom I call it. It makes 'that' sound, now I have the right rounds on it and the action just nice. Havign previously a MIM Jazz, I wouldn't ever swap back and I wouldn't play or sound any better with any other bass. (I bought mine S/H for £60).

My band 'supported' Yes in a Similar fashion in Germany earlier this year. Us David Cross Band Ray Wilson Yes. I'll dine out on it forever.
That wood is stunning!
I certainly lucked in there ! Heartily recommended purchase.

Fancied something new and nice looking for some upcoming gigs this year. Made in the Mayones Factory in Gdansk for Musicstore. I think I lucked in with the wood on this one.

I voted other. It's complex. As of today, I'm up to 3 basses again. The dearest one is a slightly battered version of a British built bass, a Status. The other two are a USA built bass - a Peavey Foundation, and a far east built Harley Benton fretless Jazz copy. I love them all for different reasons. Two of the three are both beaters and also quality brands. The one in the best cosmetic condition is the new low end bass. I'd hate to mark it, it's not a beater. For a recent gig- the gig of my life - I hired. It was cheaper than flying one of the above to the gig. To those of you with the collection of high end basses, I feel your pain.

NBD (new old bass) Peavey Foundation Five String
JohnFitzgerald replied to JohnFitzgerald's topic in Bass Guitars
That group will be the death of me... My Status came off there as well as my effects processor and one of my amps, and my acoustic and electric guitars. I'm going to put some dodgy posts up with no prices just so Jimmy Devlin bans me. -

This may be an older one he's playing, but I've wanted one since I heard this dude. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3yUniSTH1w I'm also taken with the maple and black combo.
