I'm a fan of MIJ Fenders, they're very good basses.
+1
I like the colour of that 51 P Bass, what do they call it?

Is it butterscotch blonde?
Correctomundo. Opaque. Not the see-thro' one.

Mid nineties MIJ '51 re-ish. I believe it might have been the first one in the country. It is the one from the display case at the Fender UK showroom when that was based in Nomis Studios. It was photographed for the review in Guitar Magazine. I've owned it from new. Green leather sets it orf beautifully, don't you think? Ex. Flat Eric > ex. danweb22, CIJ '62 re-ish, no new photo's as yet. It's been tarted up with all US hardware and electrics; GB8 reverse tuners, solid nickel string tree, spiral saddled bridge, Custom Shop P pickups, CTS pots, cloth covered loom, Jensen .047u paper in oil cap. Just requires a period correct pickguard. P*****s all over the Custom Shop Pino model - at a fraction of the cost! New photos when finished..... Carry on. .

Without calling anybody's expertise into question.... I was on my fourth Jazz Bass by 1973, and the second one I had from brand new, bought in November 1973 from the erstwhile Norbury Music - latterly "RipOff's Music Store" . The serial number was 500861. I know I was surprised at the time as the first three I'd owned had all been comparatively recent, two had been second hand, and all had 3***** range serials. It's been accepted and acknowledged that Fender must have had a job lot of neck plates in the 3***** range and there has been no pattern to which backplates had been fitted to which bass in which year. I've had '69 Jazzes with later serials than '74s - or '74s with earlier serials that '69s, depending on your point of view. What is acknowledged by Fender themselves is that the 5***** range was brought online before the 4***** range - few of which appeared until 1975. I have no connection with the vendor, but myself, I'm inclined in this instance to give the OP the benefit of the doubt. I'm baffled by his need to post twice, mind. Carry on. .
Maple with black blocks looks cheap. Rosewood with pearl blocks looks classic.
....is the correct answer.

Nominally it was 1973, but I've owned a 76 Jazz with four bolt at the same time as owning a 74 with three bolt. There's just no real telling. The "rules" are fraught with anomoly.

1970 - 72 Although the serial number suggests 1974, and although there were anomolies to what features stopped and what started when, I just can't reconcile that bridge pick-up positon with anything later than 1971. Having said that, I've got a Jazz with so called 70's position pickups where every other mark decries it as a 1969 issue. Go figure. It's not a combination of two different basses is it, by any chance.... older body, newer neck? .
Big Stingray fan here, have two, No1, a pre-EB, rarely used as I'm scared of dings etc and No2, a superb, bog standard 3eq from 2001 which is used all the time and not sacred so not so scared of dings etc. I have recently struggled through two Jazzes. Both instruments have been fine, but just haven't got on with them. Seemed like I had to fiddle and tweak all the time to get a sound with definition that would cut through the mix (very noisy keyboard player), sound like a Jazz and be satisfying. Never really made it. Could get the Jaco sort of sound, ie back playing on and through the back pup but this never seemed to be strong enough in a normal band setting where some low end is required to complete the sound. Going back to the Ray No1 was sublime, the sound was straight away there, lots of comments from others and it made me decide to trade in the Jazz for a Ray I could use everyday. Long story, but this is what happened, enter Ray No2. Straight away, great sound, just plug and play. Very powerful, definition all there, whack up the treble is needed, whack it back when not. Whereas a Jazz can sound like a Jazz, unmistakable in the right hands, we can all give examples of Precisions (whether low thump from Dunn and Jamerson or clank from Entwhistle and Burnell) and we can recognise a Rick. Can anyone recognise a MM? No question they sound great, for me its been the major attraction. But while I can think of examples of superb sound from a MM ('Nard Edwards, Tony Levin etc) I can't say I'd recognise a 'classic Stingray sound', I just happen to know a Stingray was being used. Anyone?
" 'Nard"...? Sheesh!

[sup]I used to sing reall well. Top chorister when I was a kid. Wasn't the best at singing and playing bass at the same time but fared reasonably well, until....[/sup] [sup]....I gave up smoking about eight years ago because of a touch of COPD. Within a few months my throat turned into something resemling an old sock. It went sort of 'baggy' for want of a better description. I lost my pitch altogether, I can't hold a note anymore or anything, and I'm really quite saddened by it. If I'd known this was going to happen I would never have given up smoking, honest. [/sup] [sup]They said that giving up the tabs would give me a better quality of life, which kind of made me further evaluate what "quality of life" actually implies. If it means "longer Life" then I have to disagree with whatever medical genius came up with that judgement. I think I'd rather have the shorter QUALITY life than the longer LESS QUALITY life, and still be able to sing.[/sup] [sup]Some conundrum, eh?[/sup] [sup].[/sup]
