What solder/iron.... for pick-ups and pots?
mckendrick replied to mckendrick's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks so much, chaps.... I got all the peripheral gadgetry... stands, sponges, and stuff. Does the 60/40 come pre fluxed? I'm used to using seperate acid fluxes with the brasswork. . -
I've never soldered up any electrics on an instrument before.... no, honest! Tho' I am aware of the technique through tinplate soldering and white metal and brass modelmaking. I've got a few old pots and stuff to practise on.... so my question is: What type of solder and what power iron should I be looking at for pick-up and pot wiring...? Any personal faves among DIY'ers and pro repairers? Cheers.

Frustration - Bass Tabs that aren't quite right!
While I share the dubiousness about tabs and how inaccurate they are, I've come across proper notation that was incorrect as well.
I've come accross loads and loads. -
They may be CBS, but they are held in high regard with quality - they are said to have been made with the tools used on the original basses, also some of the original team were still around when they made these.
Pre CBS, CBS, post-CBS.... those original '82/83 Fullerton reissues are - in mine and many other people's opinions - the best instruments ever to come out of a Fender factory. That's a stupendously good price too, man. Good luck with the sale/deal. Have a bump on me.
....I just need these two old jazz basses?! Wow, what a great job you have done Leo! What about you?
Got a clutch of Jazz Basses meself, margus', and like you I have two in particular that are my "go to" basses; an all-Fender 'bitsa' from various years, fashioned after early sixties types..., and an all original '69. I've owned and loads of different types both active and passive but I returned to these two everytime, gigged with a few basic pedals, a Sans Amp Bass Driver.... and straight thro' the P.A. - if that's an available option. If I can get away sans amp (no pun intended) then I will! Cheers. .

[sub]I've owned a '74 Jazz with a three bolt and a '76 with a four bolt. Also, care less about what Fender and any books on the subject say about serial numbers being issued in god-given years. [/sub] [sub]If any of my numerous past and present instruments are any refrence I think you're likely to find three year overlaps on any given Fender Jazz between 1969 and 1978. [/sub] [sub]Between those years the matchng of serial numbers to date stamps is very, very loose. [/sub] [sub]Between 1969 and 1973 it's almost as if they had three years worth of pre-stamped neck-plates in a box and picked them out at random. I've had a 332*** from 1970 and a 305*** from 1973.[/sub]
She's all over the media. Initially loved by the music press but now derided (especially if you read the review of her album in Rolling Stone magazine). At first music journo's seemed to fall for Del Rey because she appeared to come from no where. However, now a little more is known of her she has almost become a hate figure. Much seems to focus on people's believe they have in some way been duped....
You know what music journo's are like; they hate musicians getting more credit than they get themselves. Journos know more about music that musicians, you see. And just to be pedantic: she was derided first - about eighteen months ago. Then she was loved. But now she's having some (deserved, IMHO) success the journos can't handle it.... so it's derision time again. The album's very good. .
Hi my name is Miko, I live in SC in the US. I happened upon this site when I was looking at pictures of bass heads for my boyfriend-his amp kicked the bucket and he needs another by this weekend for his house gig. I have been playing bass for little over 4 years-I taught myself, and it went from there. I am still learning everyday. and yes, I am a chick. 41 year old mother of three! My boyfriend is also a bass player for a local house band. We been together for 4 years on Feb 8th. Funny thing is when we met, he didn't know I was a bass player (a newbie then ) and I didn't know he was one. His band was on break and he came to my table and started talking to me. I think it was meant to be. My gear...oh lawd there is too many to name again-you will have to look into my profile. Let's say I own 10 basses! Talk about G.A.S.! I hope it's ok for a foreigner to join this site...I was really impressed with what I saw before joining! this was when I owned like 8 basses, before I moved into this room, it was set up as my studio...I forgot to add the drums to my gear list-they are stored away for time being.
Greetings BassGirl. Nice post.

So what is a Jazz bass and what is the best example?
mckendrick replied to Linus27's topic in Bass Guitars
So which are correct for a jazz bass? Blocks or dots?
From 1960: dots. From v. late 1966 - @ mid 76: blocks.
Personally I think five strings are wrong too.
Word up, braveheart. For me it's not even a Jazz Bass if it's got a maple neck. Not even if it's a Fender. Moving the bridge pick-up back was cool, but CBS took it too far over the line with maple necks and moving the tug bar up top. They were all generics after that. The rest of you can sling yer brickbats this way. I don't care. .
