Wot? Post-Colonel Bruce...? How dare you? Actually, it's the Burbridge factor for me - anywhere he goes, I go: ARU, Allmans, Tedeschi-Trucks.... -
alanbass: An enlightening and entertaining account. Thank you so much for that. I see the other screw hole, now.... just thought it was a ding when I first looked. Lovely bass. Cheers.
I was reading some posts on a basschat topic today about a Trace rig on ebay and how great they sounded back in the day. Different strokes for different folks I suppose but I've never got on with TE stuff. I can never get (in my opinion) a good sound from the things. When I was getting serious about bass, in the 90's, these were the holy grail of bass amplification but I never got on with them. In the past whenever I turned up at a gig where the backline was TE or a rehearsal studio (where all old TE gear goes to die) and one of these greeted me I knew I'd be spending most of the first hour trying to get a halfway decent sound. Thank goodness for lightweight bass heads because now if the bass amp is a Trace I can just plug my TC head into the cab and get a decent sound right away.
Word up. I'm there.
Does anybody else have a dislike of TE stuff.... or am I just a weirdo?
1) Yes. 2) Possibly, I don't know you well enough.

Total Jazz Bass nutter meself but often noodled with the occasional P Bass coz some of me fave players get so much out of them. Tried loads but never felt right with any of them except for the one I could never afford - a 1960 S/B R/W Tort sweety with staggered magnets. Felt great, sounded great, bank manager disagreed. I did however recently purchase, via Dan, what was formerly Flat Eric's Fiesta R/W Tort CIJ 60's re-ish and I have to say, it really is rather stunning and already I've decided it's a keeper and it's going to get seriously gigged. One of the very nicest I've played. Can't understand why this one has passed folks by. And what a steal!!!

A very thought provoking post, la bam. I would argue you missed out sixties pop and the melodic bass playing styles and lines of the likes of McCartney and Brian Wilson - styles pretty unknown until their time came - although you did mention Carol Kaye I would say she fit into this category, but even the great bass player as she was I would say she was hardly inventive. A great reader of a song and gifted in being given a line and repeating it off-pat with barely a rehearsal. What a great skill. And what a great player for the likes of Wilson to call upon. Eminently suited to his working style. 's funny innit, I found Martk King kind of embarrassing when they stuck him with the rock greats at those RAH Prince's Trust Concerts although to be fair he'd be the first person to admit it didn't really work. I think parts of his style certainly influenced a few players, but when he got too notey it might aswell just been a rhythm guitar.... saying that I suppose it was - just a few octaves lower. Level 42 were quite interesting at first but I got pretty bored pretty quickly with what soon appeared to be a one trick pony. At the end of your penultimate paragraph you say 'there's dance music'. Are you refering to the the likes of the stuff you'd hear at Manumission and on Ministry compilations...? If you are, there really is no bass 'style' involved, just a part of the programmed equation via your controller and whatever imstrument sample you chose to play in the 400hz area. Bass frequency.... and so some could argue it's a 'style' of sorts: it is 'bass playing' - but not as we bassists know it.

You might never outgrow that Jazz, wannabeebassman. Loads of us here didn't! And you might be needing to drop that "wannabee" bit, soon. Happy Christmas.... and welcome!

Much to my delight I purchased what was formerly Flat Eric's Fiesta Red Prec from Dan today. Easily arranged, no messing about, deal done. Wouldn't hesitate doing buisiness with Dan at anytime in the future and wouldn't hestitate recommending to others. Lovely fella, too. Cheers Dan.

Did a sweet deal with Herve last week for his CIJ Jazz. Lovely fella, lovely sounding piece. Wouldn't hesitate to do business with Herve again and would recommend the same to anyone else thinking of doing so, His band's pretty good, too. ;-) Nice one Herve. Thanks, man.

Good stuff. When I was knee-high to a kick start I always wanted a Jazz Bass, don't know why, they just looked slicker than snot somehow. Could never afford a proper one, but itching to play my first bass became an Ibanez EB-3 copy - a very good instrument it was too and saw me through to my first Jazz Bass which I acquired in 1973. I've always had Jazzes ever since. I'm not a snob (right!)..., I've gone out of my way loads of times over the years and tried s***loads of other basses, both rank-and-file and exotic, yet although I've been through a few other makes and models, it dawned on me just recently that I've never ever played a gig in all of 39 years where me weapon of choice has been anything other than one of me trusty Jazz Basses. Just saying, like. Just two of many....
