With regard to the holes thing.... Fender claim these instruments are more exacting replicas than even the original V series. By totally replicating the originals one would expect the holes to be there given the originals came with the tins fitted. Anyone not wanting one with holes in it shouldn't be looking at basses claiming to replicate the originals - just get yourself a current standard. Voila, no holes!

Luthiers around South Bucks / West London area?

The Gallery. Although NW as opposed to W. -
Personally I'd suggest trying different strings over a different bridge.
This. I'd even go as far as to say try a different capacitor.
The 74 jazz doesn't have a bullet trussrod in the photo even though it says it does in the blurb. How did that happen? Is the pick a photoshop jobbie? Frank.
BIt ambiguous innit, Frank? I read the first paragraph as them explaining that late '74 was the time of introduction of that feature - tho' not specific to these models. The second paragraph clearly states the use of a four bolt neck which would imply truss rod adjustment at the heel. The models demo'd in the videos don't have bullet russ rods, tho' I did notice they had the later Sans Serif logos where the still photos clearly show the earlier Serif logos. I'm getting a bit of [s]a boner[/s] GAS for that blue P as it happens. And the blue Jazz, of course.
As I said before, the old catalogues (pre mid-70s when the rest was moved above the E string) used the term 'finger rest' not 'thumb rest', if they referred to the rest at all. I don't really see what pedantry has to do with it.
You don't?

No mention of a nitro finish in the specs though. The 57 and 62 seem to be taken off the site which is a shame IMO. They've hardly stopped them after 30 years have they?
It’s mentioned on a separate page overviewing the series, to quote: “The finishes on most new American Vintage guitars and basses consist of three coats: sealer, color and a topcoat, all of which are 100-percent nitrocellulose lacquer and are hence quite thin. This is a vintage-style finish treatment that lets an instrument "breathe" with a more natural resonance since it doesn't "constrain" the instrument's body as much as thicker and more confining modern finishes.” Here: http://www.fender.com/en-GB/series/american-vintage/#
Agreed that 'tugbar' is a more recent formulation but the old catalogues I've seen call it, if they mention it at all, a 'finger rest' not a 'thumb rest'. And I think Wilson used his thumb not a plectrum.
Thumb style/plec action. How's that for pedantic. Catalogue description - "ORIGINAL THUMBREST P&J BASS BLACK TW P.N. 0992036000" Let's all be pedants! What fun! *smiley* .
Looked like he was just strumming his thumb downwards..... rather than first/second finger upwards?
It's not really called a tug-bar - that's a nouveau-colloquialism that has sprung up over the years describing the way many people utilised it's position. Conversely you can call it a finger rest; it's catalogue description is 'thumb rest'. In the vid above, you'll see Mr Wilson has one finger over and finger under utilising it to steady the plec action. It was put there by Messrs Fender and Tavares as it was precluded that more former guitar players would switch to or double on bass, an assumption being that players would use a plectrum and that this would aid those people. Finger style precluded it's use and made it pretty redundant - tho' I always keep mine on there for the sake of the original aesthetic. .

Fender Jazz vs Squier Jazz - what's the difference
mckendrick replied to KingMacca's topic in Bass Guitars
Yeah for sure, though I don't buy a bass with regards to how much I will get for it when I sell it.
Bit flippant, that.... especially with the smiley. So you spend a grand on a bass and you don't baulk at only being able to get two hundred quid for it at the end of it's use to you? You're either stinking rich or........ ....something. . -
this puts me off of fenders just a tad..
mckendrick replied to clashcityrocker's topic in Bass Guitars
So after reading lots on here about fender qc, and personally only seeming to have had 'good' ones, this worries me a little http://www.fender.co...inyl-pickguard/ Is it just me or can everyone else see the massive gap in the top of the neck pocket? If the one bass you use for your own shots has that Qc I'm quite worried about buying one to be honest. Problem is these deluxe actives never come up second hand and no where near me stocks them, kind of don't wanna buy blind now
If you run through the selection you'll see that the photos are all of the same basic piece but the body colour and neck colour are "photoshopped" in. In some of the pictures the colour isn't completely filled in some areas - lined areas being particularly amateurish. Not saying there's never a gap between the heel and the pocket of some Fenders, but in this case I think it's the badly applied photoshopping that's tricking your perception. And mine. -

Fretless Fender Jap' 51 reissue Precision project - any advice?
mckendrick replied to Walker's topic in Bass Guitars
I'm going for a lined fingerboard to retain the look of the original as closely as possible - and make it easier for me So yes, position markers on the frets. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
If you're having a lined board, surely you want the side markers between the frets as per norm...? If you have a plain board you'd have them on the fret position. N'est-ce pas? Maybe it's just me. -
There seems to be a lot of Sunburst & Black Bass VI around. Candy Apple Red seems to be a bit elusive!
Fender Geddy Lee basses - where are they made now?
mckendrick replied to Conan's topic in Bass Guitars
I was speaking to an american guitar shop today about the Fender Geddy Lee bass and he said to me that the reason that they're all made in Mexico is because the Japan plant has been closed down.
When did they stop having string through bodies?
They didn't. Generally speaking string through began in 1995. This looks like a 92/93. It also looks more like Dakota Red than Fiesta - although reds are never the easiest thing to reproduce digitally. And at the price it's probably the bargain of the moment. Great bass, great looker, great price.
3. Machine Heads. These are all original, but the large domed screws at the back of the headstock have been replaced with bolts, and look a bit crap, unsure as to why this was done, but apparently it's been like this since its last owner got it in the 80's. To maintain originality, should I source an original full set of tuning machines, or simply track down some replacement screws.
Fender aren't unapproachable. Send them an email with a picture of the machines and the back-story and ask them if they'll sell you a set. The worst they can do is say 'no'.... but I've a hunch they'll help you out if you give them the details.
