Off The Beaten Track Covers That Go Down Well
DaveFry replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
My band sometimes does the music from Barry Norman's Film 98 ( or any other year around that time ) which is called something like Oh For A Life of Dreams I think.
Maybe you mean " I wish I knew how ( it would feel to be free ) " by Billy Taylor . If so , then good call ! Also covered by Nina Simone , The Lighthouse Family and maybe others ; -

The old memory banks have filtered out a moment in 1977 . In the middle of a Clapton Old Grey Whistle Test special he handed the stage over to Yvonne Elliman ; -
If you could make a fresh recording of just the interference from the phones , then copy/paste and align them on a seperate track so that they occur at the same time as the original , then a phase reversal of the new track would make the interference disappear . - tricky longshot , i know .

Try to not look at the fingerboard , use your ears . Practice in the dark . If you can sing it ( in tune ) you can play it ( in tune ) .

New DB on the way from Thomann - "kerbside" delivery?
DaveFry replied to franzbassist's topic in EUB and Double Bass
3-part reply ; Yes , the box did merit investigation on the cat's part , but she did tend to prefer ; an empty bass hard case left open on the floor, or, a freshly warmed up combo : The fingerboard gluing mission ; Firstly I must point out that this was the cheapest of the range of Thomann DBs . I could not find any hide glue down here in this one-horse town so I ordered some granules online . Whilst waiting I acclimatised the bass in the living room with a bowl of water by the radiator and filed a few sharp edges off the pressed brass tuners , lubricated them and the endpin thumbscrew with vaseline and scraped/cleaned off the old glue on the neck and fboard . Hide glue is applied hot and sets as it cools , so I warmed up the fboard on the radiator whilst the glue was heating up so as to give extra working time . When the glue was ready I just brushed it on both sides , lined it up , clamped it and wiped off the excess . If ever it needs to come off , a wallpaper steamer will soften the glue again . 3rd part ; Fingers crossed for safe deliveries to Messrs Walbassist and Geddy's nose . -
A Tololoche is the Mexican equivalent of the double bass . The name , from the Mayan language, means " bull embrace " . The softwood body is matched to a fingerboard and bridge of very hard local woods , designed for slapping . ( English translation of Spanish Wiki page ; http://translate.goo...che&prev=search ) There seems to be a traditional party number called " El Tololoche Chicoteado " where the player demonstrates his skill at resembling riding a bull : - Hope that inspires/interests someone .

You may find you can tweak it back come Oct/Nov .

I've had a similar thing happen on a fretless with roundwounds which I had set up for as little relief as possible for maximum mwah . At some times of the year the G string would rattle behind where I was fingering when playing 10ths around the middle of the neck. A tiny seasonal tweak of the truss rod cures it . You can test to find out if this is what is happening by just bending the neck forwards fractionally by gently pressing the headstock against a wall and pushing back on the body as you play the offending notes .

New DB on the way from Thomann - "kerbside" delivery?
DaveFry replied to franzbassist's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Thomann DB box outside my door . It wouldn't fit through my door so I had to unpack there on the stairs as quietly as I could to avoid the nosey neighbours . I could carry it on my own , it was just taller than the doorframe and there wasn't enough room to tip the top down to get it in . Mine arrived with the fingerboard loose and the bridge in bubblewrap ; The (claimed ) ebony board was about the same weight as the rest of the bass . I glued it on with hide glue. It has all been fine for the 2 1/2 years I've had it . HTH -
They called Wes Montgomery's bass playing brother William Howard Montgomery ( aka " Monk" ) .... Mark ! Surely a typo . I have seen the fnords .

+1 for Lloyd Brevett. I hear a lot of him in Sting's lines .

Natural wood finish on a budget? Advice needed.
DaveFry replied to Veganarchist's topic in Repairs and Technical
I see the new diy craze in the motorcycle world is a thing called hydro dipping . It takes the "swirling" idea further by using a water transfer film which is laid on a water surface , then after a minute an activator is sprayed on which dissolves the backing . This leaves a ready-made design for dipping objects into like the swirling method but more regular or predictable. Kits are available with different sized films and patterns , such as camo , flames , woodgrain , marble etc . Best to seal /finish after with a durable clearcoat . I guess a poly-coated bass body would just need ; Light sanding to provide a key , Bare wood ( eg neck pocket , cavity ) masking with waterproof tape, Screw holes ( eg strap pin holes ) masking with blu-tac -and a big enough bath ! Search YT and Amazon for hydro dipping . I'm tempted to try a carbon-fibre pattern myself . For a natural wood finish however , I would recommend an orbital palm sander to get the worst of the poly off , then hand sanding , followed by tru-oil ( or Sainsbury's Walnut Oil on a budget ). -
It depends on ; Your computer specs Your operating system The recording software Your computer's soundcard and The driver for your soundcard. An audio interface is just a soundcard , usually external , but with drivers ( software instructions for the operating system ) specifically written for it to prioritise audio with minimal lag ( known as latency ). You may get acceptable results with your existing internal soundcard and it's existing driver . If not , try again with the free driver ASIO4ALL . After installation it will show all the available audio inputs and outputs on your system on a graphical set up screen . Simply select your jack-to-usb as the input and your souncard's outputs where your monitor speakers are as the outputs . Next configure the buffer size in the set up ; test by recording , then ,if the sound is ok ( no breakup or crackles ) but has a delay when you play :- lower the buffer size . If you start getting breakups ,dropouts or crackles :- increase the buffer size . You have to test to find the best buffer size setting for your system . The better quality.a soundcard-and-it's-driver is the less latency you get . Your existing set-up may be adequate for your needs , but you have to test/configure to suit . Hope that helps .

sanded my maple neck to bare wood - what oil to seal it?
DaveFry replied to tedmanzie's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yes , to fake a 3-piece laminate neck . It was just an experiment on a £35 bass that I defretted and coated the fingerboard with superglue . On the front I experimented with pyrography ; ( Lower is a HB f/less ubass ) Because tru-oil is linseed based you can tint it with artists linseed oil paints . I used yellow on the front of the body to make the alder look more like spruce , and red on the back to resemble mahogany . -
sanded my maple neck to bare wood - what oil to seal it?
DaveFry replied to tedmanzie's topic in Repairs and Technical
Below is a maple neck I treated with tru-oil . ( Lower , obviously , - upper is just a work-in-progress lap steel ) I had sanded the Stagg neck back to bare wood , but before I applied the tru-oil I masked off the centre and headstock with tape and treated the edges with a home-made ebonising solution . Recipe ; Take steel wool and wash it in hot soapy water to remove the anti-corrosion coating then put it in a glass jar . Fill jar with white wine vinegar and leave overnight with the lid loose . Apply to wood with paper towels , renewing towels as necessary to avoid contaminating solution in jar . When dry sand again to flatten the raised grain . Note for using tru-oil ; It is possible for rags soaked in tru-oil to self-combust if scrunched up in an enclosed environment ( eg bin ) so unravel them flat on a non-combustible surface to dry before throwing away . -
And next , a real post on the local Open Mic farcebook . This guy wants us to think he is doing us a favour by letting us play for free .;

Not the oldest ever , but three songs that go back further than generally assumed are ; Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out - Written in 1923 https://en.wikipedia...re_Down_and_Out The eight bar changes are worth knowing . I read somewhere that Sting based one of the Police numbers on the changes . ( I like Popa Chubby's version on YT ) Blue Moon - Written in 1934 People tend to think it is a 50s or 60s number. http://en.wikipedia....%281934_song%29 Smile -Music written in 1936 by Charlie Chaplin , lyrics added in 1954 . Michael Jackson's favourite song . https://en.wikipedia...Chaplin_song%29 Chaplin played 'cello and violin left-handed and also piano . After he made his first million he had a pipe organ installed at his home in Beverley Hills and ensured that the cue sheets for the cinema organists in those silent movie days followed his instructions for his own films . Genius tune .
