There is meant to be a new documentary about him to be released next month . " Jaco " , directed by Stephen Kijak , and financed by Robert Trujillo ( of Metallica ) a lifelong fan . - Looking forward to that .....

I guess you'll have to explain to the guitarist what the Monitor Mix knob is for . Show him/her the third paragraph in the " Recording with the Lambda " section of this Sound On Sound article ; http://www.soundonso...xiconlambda.htm

Thanks . I read somewhere that a dealer in Scotland bought a lot of Fenix stock after the Fender lawsuit . Young Chang was licenced to make Squiers , but also made their own range called Fenix which were said to be better than the Fenders they were copying so Fender sued , or threatened to sue , so they stopped . I'm just curious about the black designs . Mine seems to be under the clear poly . It does sound great , even with ( I guess ) 20 year-old strings !

I picked up this Fenix p-bass a few weeks ago from a local charity shop . It is on the right in this pic ; ( left is a Sunn Mustang ) The serial number in silver on the headstock says E 1056361 So I have two questions ; 1) The only serial number info I can find is via the Wiki page for Squiers http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squier which is a little unclear . Was it made in '90 , '91 or '87-'88 ? 2 ) Did the black design on the front come from the factory ? I have found another pic on the web of one in Germany ; but none of the others I have found have any designs there . A puzzle . Thanks for any answers from the collective wisdom .......

^ I was stalked by the Boots Store Detective when I kept oscillating between the different aisles of nail polish with my open rucksack in hand on a quest for Surf Green . This body was in the rucksack , and I ended up with two shades because the 15-yr old poly had faded unevenly ; ( The two little bottles are indeed nail polish )

Try this Audio Illusion ; http://philomel.com/...Tritone_paradox It is just four pairs of tones , each pair consists of tones a tritone ( aug 4th ) apart . But each tone is so harmonically rich that the fundamental is indeterminate ; it could be in any octave* . By the third pair I can't tell if the two tones go up or down ! How do other more experienced ears here get on with it ? * Missing Fundamental : http://en.wikipedia....ing_fundamental The illusion comes from http://deutsch.ucsd....pages.php?i=206 where they conclude that the way each of us perceives the illusion depends on the speech we each heard as children , but further research http://www.klinikum....hp?id=5503&L=en suggests that the left side of the Auditory Cortex of the brain is responsible for recognising the fundamental whereas the right side perceives the harmonics ( spectral perception ). I only know that for me they both get confused by the illusion above . I just want to be able to play fretless in tune

Just stumbled across this young NS Artist via the NS website . He is using an alternative tuning for Northern Indian Classical Music to emulate the vocal sound in the same way as a Saranghi or a Dilruba . Tuning is as follows ; ( Where the E string would be ) he is using a high C string tuned to D ( " " A string would be ) " " " a regular D string tuned to D ( " " D " " " ) " " " a G string tuned to A ( " " G " " " ) " " " another high C string tuned to D So DDAD ( In case you are wondering what a Dilruba is , here is mine with my NS NXT for scale . It is played with a bow like the Saranghi , but has frets like a Sitar ( which is plucked ) 21 strings , the camel bone bridge sits on a tensioned goatskin ( like a banjo ). Only the two top left strings are played , the other two main strings serve as drones , and the 17 sympathetics are tuned to the Raga ( scale ) of the piece which can be varied to suit the vocalist .) So , he is seeking to imitate the sound of a Dilruba , which in turn was created to imitate the sound of the voice , which is considered to be the " purest " form of Music in the Indian Classical tradition . - Funny old world

When you're lying in the park and you think " Wow , that dove is cooing in 7/4 ! " and you start making up basslines to it in your head . or ..... When you're clearing up the half-empty glasses after a party and you end up arranging them on the kitchen table to make a scale .

Just picked up another slightly obscure acoustic instrument this afternoon , a Dulcitone made in 1895 in Glasgow . It is the same as the one in this video , but with different fold-up legs and without the artwork on the front . Sounds like an unplugged Rhodes so I shall experiment with one or more piezos , phaser , overdrive etc

The organisers of the Olympics in London this year are trying the same trick ; http://www.corporatewatch.org/?lid=4290&fwcc=1&fwcl=1&fwl ( They have even asked for Keith Moon to play at the closing ceremony ; http://www.nesn.com/2012/04/london-olympic-organizers-ask-for-deceased-who-drummer-keith-moon-to-perform-at-closing-ceremonies.html ) I like this approach ;

In Ellington's day Satin was a slang name for gin . So during the Prohibition a satin doll was like a jazz groupie who would follow bands around because that was the easiest way to access the illegal alcohol . Switcheroony !

Slightly obscure acoustic instrument ? A friend gave me a Dilruba last summer , she had brought it back from Northern India a few years ago . Here it is next to my NXT EUB for scale ; It is made from one piece of tun wood ,and the camel bone bridge sits on a goatskin stretched over the hollow body . The neck is hollow with a thin soundboard of it's own nailed on with thorns from the Honey Locust tree . The movable frets are brass tied on across the back . It has 21 strings ; one main playing string , 3 drones and 17 sympathetics . The sympathetics run through holes in the bridge and under the hoop frets . It is played with a bow . ( I use a double bass french bow ) This is a bridge from another , not sure if it is camel hip-bone or ivory (!) but you can see how the sympathetics run through the bridge , while the drones and main string sit on top ; ( Damaged on top left ) The best demo I have found in english is the first video on this page ; http://www.chandraka...ic/dilruba.html 66cm from nut to bridge . ( I am saving up for 20 metres of 0.12 guage string , and I need to make one bone peg for the soundboard that the sympathetics divert around .)

You thought your pissy little bass blisters were bad?

There are pictures of a sarangi player's left hand on each of these pages ; http://www.sarangi.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Sarangi.html http://chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/sarangi/sarangi_fingering.html A sarangi is played upright with a bow like a 'cello , but the strings are stopped with the top of the figernail or the cuticle above the nail . Players develop big callouses like in the photos -
I don't play guitar , but a neighbour left this here for me to check over . He had just bought it for £20 untested . The top E string was missing , so I found a " good " tension on the D string first , then tuned it to ; Root on the E Fifth on the A Tonic on the D Major 3rd on the G Fifth on the B Then I turned the webcam on and improvised...... https://www.youtube....h?v=Q4YUi6NdntI A Jack Daniels Miniature bottle makes for a handy slide if you don't have a real one ! ( Grace is my Great-Niece , four weeks old at the time .)
