20 Greatest British Rock Bands
No. 8 Wire replied to hiram.k.hackenbacker's topic in General Discussion
The reason why the term "The British Isles" is not used much these days is precisely because most of the people who live on one of the islands are definitely not British.
It's more complicated than that though isn't it? A whole load of overlapping definitions and identities; geographical, political, historical...as you say, best left well alone. I think the only definitive thing you can say is if you hold a UK passport you are British... even though you may also be something else too. -
My mistake I always thought they were British because of Brian Johnson 😳 Technically Fleetwood Mac are classed as British-American rock band so the line is a bit blurred
Brian Johnson must have been convicted of something at sometime so that makes him an honourary Aussie. Besides he's possessed by the spirit on Bon Scott.... Fleetwood Mac - which was greater, Peter Green era or Rumours era? -
Half the band is English (The Edge was born in Barking, Essex and Adam Clayton was born in Oxfordshire) and the other half of the band is Irish so maybe they could be classed as a Irish/British band????
British in the sense of British Isles? AC/DC are fair dinkum aussies though, someone mentioned them above. Surprised no one has mentioned Fleetwood Mac? -
To be even more precise. Maiden was seen as a new wave of British heavy metal.
Yes, but a lot of what was once thought of as metal is now seen as hard rock. Kind of irrelevant though as all heavy metal is still a kind of rock. -
They are just trying to cover as many genres as possible but keeping it to 20 total as typical cliched online lists go, hence they have Zep so can't have Deep Purple, they have Floyd so can't have Genesis or Yes. It's all pretty pointless.
Yep, he probably just copied the list from somewhere else anyway. Its done the trick though, generated loads of hits from people who wouldn't normally hit evening standard clickbait. Got to pay Osbornes fat cat salary somehow... -
+1 Although Maiden is technically heavy metal
Technically heavy metal is sub genre of rock so it fits. In any case Maiden is heavy rock compared to what gets touted as metal now. +1 for Maiden though, must be the most overlooked yet most successful, influential and popular British band of all time. -
All sorted now. CameronJ is back in action!
PMed you on SBL just to see which CameronJ you are. Would the real CameronJ please stand up......
-
Hmm that's weird. Well I'm logged in and functioning as normal!
Have you tried the campus section or are you just using the lessons section only?
-
Yep, I am indeed!
You're still showing as 'alumni' so I guess you haven't reactivated yet!
I’ve taken the plunge on the lifetime membership. Now let’s hope I have more discipline now than I did last time I signed up!
Great, see you on there. Are you CameronJ there too?
-
Ah, yes. I was a member but it expired a while back. Spoke to Laura from the SBL support team via email and she’s been very helpful. She said I can just send her an email whenever I’m ready to go for it and she’ll email me an invoice for the lifetime fee. I’ll ponder on it a while but I reckon I may go for it. It’s a bargain and I enjoy the content.
That's great. Good to know they are pragmatic about offering you the lifetime even after your subscription has expired.
-
Sorry to dig up an old thread but is SBL still offering the lifetime membership? I can't seem to find it on the website...:/
Lifetime membership is offered to you after you have done a year of the standard membership - you can then renew year by at a reduced rate or sign up for lifetime membership which works out at a bit less than two years subs. I'm assuming you aren't a member already? If you are a member then the site admin send you the lifetime offer as your 1st year sub runs out.

If you do some serious stalking on YouTube like I have, you will finds stacks of clips of Billy playing straight. Usually always on his Sig bass, but just plugged into the P pickup into whatever stack or studio gear.
It says "for various charities" on the official website, I've read it.
Interesting one this. In 2015 and 2016 the festival was explicitly in support of H4H and NABD (New Amp and Bass Day??) https://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/news/2015/november/ilfracombe-rocks/ However, this years festival doesn't explicitly state that but still has those charities listed on its links page. If you go to the ticket page, you can make a voluntary donation to NABD, and last year it seems you could do this with NABD and H4H. The festival says it is not for profit but that's easy isn't it, no event makes a profit once you paid all the businesses that support it and the event management company! I couldn't find any PR releases saying what the Festival had raised for these charities, which seems odd - surely it would be good publicity for the event to advertise that. I think for the charities involved they'll get something for nothing which is good, but it does smack a little bit of using the charity tag line as a way of generating free publicity (and therefore profits) and also in this case as a justification for procuring free services and sponsorship from business and bands. Hopefully these suspicions are unfounded and this is a great money spinner for the charities involved. Given the lack of charity information on the website (ie no endorsements, registration numbers etc), it may just be that the only donations are those taken voluntarily by adding them to the ticket bill or by the charities themselves directly at the event. -

That's a bit outrageous really. Its not a free or charity festival by the looks., In a holiday park, so they'll be making off the accommodation costs too. Best avoided. -
It means that when you take them off a bass to put on another bass (i'm constantly swapping and changing) they fray and look like crap! I'm all for a good quality flat without silks, dont DR Legends have no silks?
Been following this because I tend to swap strings around and silks don't play that game. Pretty sure DR legends have silks, but not 100%. D'addario half wounds don't have silks, not quite a flat but sound a lot like them when old.
Which is normally called price anchoring and is an effective marketing tool. Every marketing person needs to understand how that work. You should too, then you can make better purchasing decisions. http://www.bonzamarketing.com/4-examples-of-effective-anchor-pricing-tactics/
Thanks for putting a name to it, at some stage I need to put a little time into studying marketing and pricing strategies- for a business I have in mind. Are you in marketing yourself?
The cabs seem to be a perfect concept for 1985 when heavy was viewed as desirable and an indication of quality.
Maybe darkglass doesn't expect to sell any or many to the general public. They could just be a marketing tool so that endorsing artists can have a wall of darkglass cabs behind them in music videos, concerts and YouTube promos. After all, you can't see a pedal or a class D amp from the back of a gig can you? The pricing is just there so the other gear doesn't look quite so expensive!
True... Although not of Greek but of Latin origin from "constant" (in honour of Constantine, name of the first Christian Roman Emperor and founder of the Byzantine Empire). For some unexplicable reason (although I have a strong theory), Greeks believe that Kostas is equivalent to English name "Gus" History/linguistic lesson for free....
Constantine's full name: Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus Ie his true title was Augustus hence Gus? -
Just bought a Tuner from Pete. Great service! Just like amazon but with more personality!

More seriously though so many amps are stacked in weird ways and are fine. My Mesa walkabout for instance is usually found stacked knobs up in its back pack on the combo, and that thing needs a lot of (fan) air. I can't see how orientation would hinder cooling in a fan driven amp, unless the vents were blocked.
-
These barefaced cabs are light as a feather aren't they? And the trace is a brick... so stack the cabs on top of the amp....

Stick your jazz neck on your p bass?
-
Rip the guts out of a TC Spectracomp and install it in the bass with a 9v battery. Set up a toneprint with high gain and compression and use your switch to patch it in or solos. Even easier, just tape the mini pedal and a battery to your strap and use it that way (as long as you can hit the stomp switch while playing). Edit: Fairfield circuitry accountant above looks even better for this being analogue.

Rechargeable power supply station....?
0949 Conducting an experiment. I'm going to measure how long it takes to discharge the 20000 mA battery to get an idea of how much 'real world' capacity is available. Plugged in a single pedal to see how long the battery lasts. Its a Mooer Tender Octaver with a (hopefully) 128 mA draw, can't measure the current to check unfortunately. The step up converters have an efficiency or around 90%, so the pedal should be using 1.28W of power, which on the 5V side equates to 256 mA current, or a max of 86 hrs battery use. So we'll see how close it gets! I've fully charged this battery, but immediately on plugging in the pedal, its already dropped to 3/4 full. Also I'm fairly sure the battery self discharges (maybe the charge control circuit always draws). So I'm fairly sure the life will be well below the ideal! After this I'll try out a representative number of pedals from the board - say 3 on and see how that goes. Edited to correct some figures!
2116 - and its off. So that's basically 36 hours - less than half the capacity of what it should be! Anyway from my previous experience of these batteries as phone backups I knew they wouldn't be up to spec, hence over speccing the size. So I'll conduct a test with the full pedal board in a week or so and see what 'up' time we can expect.
