1.
Having just viewed that clip, it has to be said that the Beeb clearly did NOT do rhythm guitar ...
Maybe Phil decided where the mics went that day.
 2. Having a bit of a Thin Lizzy / Gary Moore moment last night on youtube. This video brought to mind all the complaints we have on here about the beeb not doing bass on live recordings. Well, they used to know how to do it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9xyWxXyOOg&list=FLpYWcKxDi6vFvWjYQk73bjw
 3.
I had a Squier Standard P Bass Special V which was a Precision 5 with jazz pickups, much like this: The four-string variants all seem to be PJ though.
There's one of those on the bass players market UK Facebook group right now.
 4.
I'd assume the two individual coils of the P pickup are wired in series, as per usual, but surely the P and J aren't in series with each other? Wouldn't that sound monstrous? Or maybe I don't quite understand how electronics work.
Ah yes, quite right, should have read the question better. I was talking about the two halves of the P not PJ. Could be an interesting experiment in there somewhere though....
 5.
Hang on...does this mean that PJ basses are typically wired in series? This would explain a few things and possibly lead to me kicking myself...
Yep, typically wired in series. I think there are some oddballs out there that aren't but I think its very much the exception. AFAIK anyway!
 6. There were some model changes in 2012, most notably the pickups changed from no-name 'vintage' to fender custom shop. You might want to check that yours is at least the current spec.
 7.
Good tune. I know some have derided stings lyrics. But I have always enjoyed them and found them very apt. He seems to have a song for every emotion.
I'll second that. I've never actually heard criticism of his lyrics, but then I've never bothered to read any music magazines etc - and i was too young to notice when I first heard the Police. You also have to take into account he's singing while playing bass too.
 8.
That's what I was thinking. I've got a S1 bass from way back when and that was the idea. It's a decent enough impression. How does a Jazz bass sound anyway?
Jazzy? A quick google search indicates it's definitely an option - looks like some P pickups work better than others though. I guess you want a high output P pickup since you'll be halving the output by going parallel?
 9. Could this be achieved with a PJ bass, but wiring the the P pickup in parallel (or having a series/parallel switch). Would that give the P pickup more of a J flavour, especially when combined with the bridge pickup??
 10.
Or one of these...
Or one of these from Maruszczyk: https://www.public-peace.de/index.php/bass-guitars/maruszczyk/jake/4-string/508-jake-4p-c3pu-el-comandante130137 Just turn down the P pickup volume and there you have it.
 11.
Now fitted and I see what you mean. Yes they do make my P bass sounds a good deal more flexible tonally and probably ideal for blues fusion. And yes they do have a nice tone. And yes they do feel nicer than new nickels. Are they worth the extra money? Reminds me of when a crazy clay pigoen shooter (me) paid £30 to a gunsmith to shorten his stock by 1/4 in 'because it might make all the difference'. Right.
Got any examples of the music you mean by blues fusion? When I hear the phrase I think of John Mayall and bass playing I think Pino Palladino (don't know why on that last one maybe confusing Mayer with Mayall). Anyway, what I'm saying is a P with Tomastik Infelds would probably be the business for this caper - especially if slap is only a once is a while activity. Or try a set of half-wounds.
 12.
This genre often has quite prominent bass so Stingray or Stingray 5 is ideal. Many people use active basses for this type of thing - in my opinion you need something with an authoratitive sound. Warwick/Wal would be another choice.
Just about to chime in and say a Stingray. An actual single pickup MM Stingray though, not a copy or a P bass with an extra pickup (in the wrong place). Plus the OP has been through every other type of bass so it's probably time!
 13.
Quote. I play with both a pick and fingers. I prefer fingers from the point of view that there are more dynamics, accents, etc possible, but obviously a pick is easier for stamina / fatigue / injuries. Three fingers is also good if just straight speed is needed. Quote. I agree. Now about the bass playing !!!
Hey! What I do in my bedroom is my own business....
 14. Thrash player as a student, now just a bedroom player of thrash. Looks like your predecessor played with fingers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtqlgpnRPA0 Had a great listen, really enjoyed it. I play with both a pick and fingers. I prefer fingers from the point of view that there are more dynamics, accents, etc possible, but obviously a pick is easier for stamina / fatigue / injuries. Three fingers is also good if just straight speed is needed, but I'm not too good at playing complex lines with 3.
 15. Here is a Twin Pack of 5 String EXL170-5 Nickel Wound Regular Light (.045-.130) 1 set is completely unused and sealed. The other set has been fitted but taken straight off. It was fitted to a Sire V7 5er (4 + 1 headstock), strung through body and with 3-4 turns on the pegs. So there is a lot of length there to fit all but 5 in a line headstocks. I mean the D string is actually uncut. [s]£24[/s] £20 posted in the UK. It's this set: https://www.amazon.c...0?ie=UTF8&psc=1
 16.
Happy Jack... you're never too old. I picked up the upright at 41. After playing jazz, swing, Irish etc, I joined a rockabilly band at 56 and learnt to slap. I was in that band for 9 years. At 69, I have my own rock n roll band that only requires slapping on a few Bill Haley numbers (Marty's Juke Joint on farcebook) but it's good to keep my hand in. Fact is that most rockabilly bands overdo the slap thing. A whole night of slap gets pretty boring for me anyway. I'd rather it were used only on songs where it enhances the song.
Hey, that's encouraging, I'm 41 and just trying out upright. I pretty much only want to play rockabilly, rock and roll and blues though. Its tough going but it seems to be beneficial for my electric playing too. Unfortunately I'm too far away to be of any help to Jennifer but its the sort of thing it would be great to have a crack at.
 17. I have the fender aby for a similar purpose (at home only so far), but I wouldn't recommend it. Seems to generate noise on the A channel. Would sound terrible at gig volumes. I ignored all the advice to with the super expensive isolating /active units, but now I see as usual the experts were right! This may be solved for me in the near future by purchasing a HD500X, however if I was to actually play out with this rig is spend some money on a really good aby, or modify a bass to have two independent pickup outputs, ala Billy Sheehan attitude bass.
 18.
What is people's opinion on this? Are there better resources for the money? Only been playing about a month and I've found his youtube stuff really useful.
Quite a bit of info here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/287321-scotts-bass-lessons-sign-up/ Doesn't quite answer the question but scroll down that thread and you'll see a few answers on value for money and also some alternatives. For me, its been great value. Doesn't mean i don't check out other online teachers free material though, especially talkingbass.net. Its got to be said though, that's SBL isn't only Scott teaching any more, quite a few top class players giving seminars and creating courses too. I think basically we're all different, so we'll respond in different ways to tutors. If you like Scott's free material, you'll probably really enjoy the full courses.
 19. Here's the link, hopefully it works for you, its a big file. Extract and then drag and drop the drum pack on the drums folder in the ableton browser. https://s3.amazonaws.com/focusrite/Focusrite_Drum_Pack.zip
 20. I've got one. Use it for home recording, great sort of Swiss army knife bit of kit. Does sound great used as a preamp into a power amp too. Quite a remarkable bit of kit considering how old it is, although I find the compressors a waste of time and no octaver or envelope filter. I often run a spectracomp, tender octaver and envelope filter before mine. I'm thinking seriously about getting a HD 500x but I'll probably wait and see if one comes up locally.
 21.
I've just got one. It wasn't advertised as a HB but that's what it is. It's had the headstock reshaped (very well), new Wilkinson bridge and bridge and pickup covers and an unused set of flats. I've not really had the chance to have a good go but so far I'm very impressed.I've got a Seymour Duncan PB 3?in my drawer that I might put in and also a set of Wilkinson big tuners. I'd quite like the colour of the neck to be less white but that's no big deal
Any pics?
 22. I use it, only by default as it came free with my focusrite. Only use it for recording, not loops etc. However there was a free download somewhere with about 1gb of loops. I'll try and find a link later. It works fine for what I user it for, not very intuitive, but I don't even find garage band intuitive so could just be me.
 23.
No.8, I was in a similar quandary, whether to upgrade from the PODxt Live to the HD. I added the Bass Pack to the xt, and used the SVT model, which sounded great. I added the HD Bass Pack to the HD, and the SVT model is definitely my favourite. The upgrade to the HD was well worth it, as it sounds loads better than the PODxt IMO. I must admit that I haven't tried the HD HiWatt model with the bass, but I would expect it to sound pretty good.
Thanks mate. I might just have to take a chance on it. I guess my problem is my favourite amp sim is the DR201 (bass) and that's not present on the HD500 at all. I did some experiments using the XT Live late last night. The XT has 3 Hiwatt models, DR103 and DR201 (both guitar models) and a DR201 Bass model. Now strangely the DR201 for guitar and bass sound completely different to my ears. I also can't get a tone that approximates the DR201 bass sim out of the DR103 model. hmmmmm.
 24.
Agree with a fair amount of this being a member on SBL as well. It's well worth the money (imo) and have got a lot out of it just in terms of the inspiration it's given me. The only thing I really struggle with is that there is so much content on there that I will never get around to watching or reading it all. I like the fact that there aren't any slagging matches on the forum - a breath of fresh air having been on forums for the last 16 years where slagging matches are accepted as the norm . It's just a bunch of really great people helping each other out with music and bass stuff in general. Judging from my encounters with Scott, he comes across as being a good bloke. If he's made a ton of dosh out of it - fair play to him, especially as he's from a working class background, and from what I can see, he's grafted for it and he's got a good team of people working with him. Comparing his first videos he put up 6/7 years ago to what he's created now shows how much he's learned about selling his business, but it's a business that's at the forefront of education for bass players.
+1 to all of this.
