No. 8 Wire

I'm looking for recommendations for Stereo Loopers with a Rhythm guide - preferably drum tracks. Totally new to loopers but need something to quickly record bass and guitar for mainly practice purposes, especially looking for a looper with a drum track as I'd also like to practicing keeping good time as well. I don't know if I'm barking up the wrong tree but I want to be able to run in stereo so I can send bass (and rhythm) to my bass amp and guitar to tube amp. I'm really only assuming this is what the stereo function is for! I think the obvious option for me is a Boss RC3, but they seem expensive for they are and I'm not about just the one footswitch. Holy grail would be able to have to loop tracks (verse/chorus) or be able to switch memory slots on the fly. That is truly epic. AJFA was actually my favourite Metallica Album as a guitar playing teenage numpty, but I really lost interest in them from the Black album onwards. Just lately I've been getting into the Burton albums again, but not AJFA - I really like the version above though. Better with fingers than pick I have to say (sorry Jason!)

I think it's the creativity that is the difference. Ellefson and Bello (and Burton) are responsible for some iconic basslines, Newstead... not really. Maybe not his fault, but that's the way it is. I was thinking the other day about the other new boy in Metallica, Hammett. He pretty much always gets derided but many of his solos up to the black album are iconic too. If you could cut off their careers in 1989 they'd all be legends!

Frank Bello mostly plays fingerstyle though doesn't he? Although I do know he plays pick it the song needs it.

I think it is relevant. The legal definition of custom isn't difficult it's in the directive, pretty cut and dried. However it's not needed as the customer isn't claiming no fault return, he's claiming a return/partial refund based on a defect. This is covered by his legal guarantee. If this was bought from Germany, they are pretty hot on consumer rights. It wouldn't be that difficult to enforce barring language difficulties. That all being said, it seems crazy to me. Surely the manufacturer should just accept it back, repair the finish and send it back, that's all he's after isn't it?

That's a good question. The word the EU directive uses is 'personalised' or 'an order to the customers specification'. So, I would say this bass definitely falls into that category. Your ordering in the right standard colour from the manufacturer would not be a custom order as that item is offered as stock. Of course, there may be further guarantees offered in the country of sale (DE?) That would be over and above the EU minimum, so that would have to be looked at too.

Actually this does not apply to custom orders. It's in the list of exemptions to the 14 day rule. The 2 year EU guarantee does apply however (goods must be repaired or replaced at no cost to the consumer). You would have to look up the law in the country it was purchased in to know the details of how to enforce that. If it's cross border the credit card company or PayPal would probably get a result easier. Although a lot of businesses on the continent ask for payment by bank transfer to avoid such issues...

Fair enough, that makes sense. I didn't used to be fan of F basses either, but I've mellowed about it over the years.

That's interesting, I've never heard Jags described as ugly. Was there something more extreme about your one? I have a five string one, they seem to go for ok money (as do most of the Squier 5ers). I find it a really comfortable bass to play, for me it's the same as a jazz bass, but without the lower horn getting on the way. I wouldn't have any issue playing it in public, I'd class it as quite a traditional shape than pointy like the 80s hair metal basses.

I don't know why Laney doesn't get more attention. Seems to be great gear at good prices. I think my dream rig would be a Laney Nexus Tube plus a stack. No space, money or need though...

Luckily they don't take themselves that seriously - especially Iron Maiden. Megadeth can be a bit overly serious, but even in that video I posted there are a fews stops where they are doing a stupid head banging move and you can see they are laughing through it. Now I think about it, I'm not sure any music or art in general should be taken entirely seriously...

Just adding to that, you can also hear him playing just as tight on any number of bass clinics on YouTube and indeed live for Megadeth. This one at Hammersmith Apollo is my favourite Also, I wouldn't change anything on Krist's track. It's exactly how Nirvana should sound.

This is actually the thought I had. I have a pj5 bass with a j retro, I don't particularly like the pickups, although the J retro helps. I wanted to use the j retro elsewhere and was looking at perhaps the emg set as a replacement. Lack of time and money has shelved that though! Just as an aside, the is one annoying thing about the j retro for a pj. In passive mode, you can't solo the P pickup. You either have both, or solo J. So I've wired my pickups back to front so the P can be soloed.

I drew a blank when I was looking around for a set too. The problem seems to be the P pickup, not many 5 string options for that, especially in the budget ranges.

Have you checked out the EMG PJ5 Set? About £150 but does come with a solderless loom etc, so saves you a little bit in the electronics department.
