Thanks, I usualy use them, have to mix them around though to get the 'right' sound. Not sure how you can get the wrong sound for Clash though..
Easily His basslines can be a lot more involved than they first appear. White Man In Hammermith Palais is a great line

A guitarist I work with is buting a Vintage Les Paul for his son for Christmas so looking forward to um....assessing it Just hope he makes it clear he wants the Vintage with the capital V or his mortgage has had it

What notes are you playing? The chorus might sound a little weird as the original bassline is quite busy and an integral part. Cheers Alun
Cool stuff, sounds like a good 'relationship'. I wonder how many basschatters are endorsed? Cheers pedro
I'm lucky enough to be endorsed by Elixir and, although not officially "endorsed" by them, recently got a very good deal on Markbass gear via the UK Distributor, Proel Cheers Alun

Fodera Victor Wooten Re-issue Bass
Alun replied to JakeBrownBass's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I really don't like plain backs on basses - would much rather continuity. Still a crazy price when, for the same price, you could but a custom bass and a small car to transport it round in -
I have no problem with slapping in the appropriate place but.. <rant> Why do so many people just slap when trying basses???? Walking round BassDay this year, you'd think that everyone there slapped on every single song and did nothing else. </rant>

Congratulations The Vintage stuff is getting some great reviews, sound like really nice instruments. Cheers Alun

Thanks OG The songs included are... 10 Christmas chordal arrangements for solo bass in notation and tablature Auld Lang Syne, Away In a Manger, Ding Dong Merrily On High/Deck The Halls, In The Bleak Midwinter, Jingle Bells, Joy To The World, O Come All Ye Faithful, O Little Town of Bethlehem, Silent Night, The First Noel 11 Christmas melodies specially transposed to “easy” open keys ( ideal for less experienced players) in notation and tablature As above, but “Ding Dong Merrily On High” and “Deck The Halls” are presented as seperate pieces 2 mini lessons An introduction to natural harmonics and a lesson on the two handed tapping technique used for the arrangement of “Jingle Bells” So how do you get it? All you have to do is go along to http://bassbook.co.uk where you can pay by credit/debit card or Paypal by clicking on the Buy Now button. Once I receive your payment, I email you the zip file - it’s that easy I will also send you a link to performance notes to assist in playing the arrangements. Cheers and thanks again Si for buying one Alun

A couple from a gig last month.... In case you're wondering what the Hell I'm doing in the first one - I'm trying to juggle using an eBow, the volume pot and a Whammy pedal while watching for a cue from the keyboard player Cheers Alun -
Yeah, that's my man. He gave me my first ever jazz gig. Say hi when you see him (Rob Palmer - he won't know bilbo )
Will do
Hello! Ive only been playing bass for 2 years, im in a band but find it a bit hard when it comes to some notes. In some of our setlist, mainly a couple of cover songs, i follow the guitar chords as im not quite quick enough to pull off the full bass riff....but some of the minor notes dont sound quite right, just wondered if anyone had any advice as to an easy way of working it out? Ive heard playing the root note of the guitar chord is usually what to do but minors dnt seem to work! I understand ive probably made myself look veeery stupid in this message but i just dont know and no-one has ever told me :-( sorry! carla
Hi Carla. Playing the root should work on any chord eg A will work under A major, A minor, etc. Is there any particular song where you've noticed this? If so, please post and we'll work out what's happening Cheers Alun
Its weirdly nice, Jase The Cardiff scene sounds like it has changed since I was playing there ('88 - '94). The nearest I ever got to fusion was Dick Hamer's Rhythm Method, doing Crusaders and Steps Ahead coversas I recall. The Four Bars Inn - halcyon days!! You would have been around 20. Did we ever meet?
Sax player Dick Hamer? He's still about - do the odd big band gig with him. The Four Bars was a fab venue and much missed :-) Cheers Alun
Hey guys... after a sabbatical since the now ex hubby and I split up I'm back. *Waves* Hope everyone is well.. did I miss much? I'm good, slowly settling into single life.. still playing bass although currently mourning for my 5 string after the strap gave way and it hit the deck, bouncing off the jack... Taking it to a luthier friend of mine sunday.. pray for me... Band's going good. Got 2 new songs and a gig on the 14th December which we're really looking forward to. Ex hubby is still the drummer.. so was a bit weird at first but it's getting easier... Anyway, yea... I'll stop rambling. Hello anyway!
Welcome back Hope the bass is an easy fix! Cheers Alun -
Ok, I'll have a listen when I get chance and see if I can work it out

Most people would go for the loud rocky moments but it can sound quite effective in ballads surprisingly - listne carefully to "She's The One" by Robbie Williams - distorted bass galore! Cheers Alun

Saw them last night and Martini was incredible - doubling those runs fingerstyle takes some doing
Well, gotta mention, that the only thing I don't like about him is when he uses octaver and 'tries' to be gu1tar-like when soloing.. I don't see any reason here.
I know what you mean - I saw him on The White Room ( Ch4 music prog from the 90s) with Tackhead and he did the whole thing with the Whammy pedal on +1 octave while a second bassist stood at the back and played the basslines. I love his playing on "Stain" by Living Colour though - some of the most amazongly creative rock playing I've heard.

Which album is it on? Am guessing it's the most recent one as I've only listened to it in the car so never looks at the cover There's some great playing on their stuff, but the only one I've learnt so far is Beartown from the previous album.

Is it the weird fast slap thing he does you're referring to? If so, it's basically this.... He often uses his fingertips to slap the strings onto the frets, similar to the "typewriter" technique John Entwistle used. The fast triplet is played by using the first finger on the E string and putting the thumb under the string so that it's almost pinching it. He then quickly flicks his wrist so that the first finger hits ths string down and the thumb snaps it back up - it's pretty much the opposite of normal slapping! Weird but effective.

Gamlins in Cardiff usually have a few Snarling Dogs toys in but not tried that one yet.
