1. That's great, we didn't mind being part of that, so keep us posted about the next one
2. We never found Ralph and his other half! We drove back to Chiswick - cos we're not really Camden-on-a-Friday-night material, the two of us, are we? - and had a relaxing night in. Awesome to know that the gig sold out!
3.
It's a bit unfortunate that they mentioned it being Stu Hamm's first LBGS in the mag though as he was there a few years ago, first year possibly? Hope some more players are announced soon, it's still looking a bit thin on the ground. Wondering if they are waiting for 101% confirmations after Armand Sabal Lecco had visa problems at the last minute last year.
I think the show was still called the London International Music Show when Stu was there last (I had a brief chat with him). If my recollection is correct, then this *will* be his first time at the LBGS as such.
4. Tweeted. I'll create a Facebook event in due course.
5.
BGM run LBGS - because they run some live news stuff they will often pre-promote on the magazine news pages ahead of the show site. Gets them additional site traffic and good for SEO if they release lots of current news articles
Exactly
6. I don't know the tecnical details, but it must have to do with the different way in which flats vibrate - because they tend to be 'stiffer' (for lack of a more technical term). I'm sure someone more experienced can explain tension, compliance and all that jazz...
7. Big Thomann cardboard box with padding, and smaller, thinner Warwick Corvette box inside. Collection of either or both from Chiswick or South Acton as soon as possible please - otherwise they go into the recycling box. Thanks!
8. From the tone point of view, I can't say I can hear much of a difference between the two - both have a body made of ash and an ovangkol neck, and only the fingerboard is different (tiger ebony in the fretless, wenge in the fretted). Both have identical sets of D'Addario Chromes on, and I play both through the same PJB combo (one at a time, haha!). Although the fretted is a 2013 model and the fretless is from 2010, the differences in the body shape are very subtle, and probably have little impact on the sound itself. It's mostly the playing style on the fretless that makes the difference, wot wiv it not having them bleedin' frets making unwanted clanky noises... I'm deeply in love with both the sound and the look of both. Some more pics of the new baby: Note the low B saddle minus the spring!
9. The LBGS organisers have just announced a double bass builder, http://www.thomasmartin.co.uk/, among the exhbitors. Good news
10. A few minutes ago this appeared in my Facebook newsfeed, from my friend Dave Pomeroy:
Dave Pomeroy I made it into USA Today's story about the carry on legislation the AFM has worked on for years. Happy to take some of the credit, but it was a team effort all the way, including herculean efforts by AFM Legislative Director Alfonso Pollard and President Ray Hair. That's how we roll... [image removed because this site doesn't allow it] Instrument carry-on rule for flights pleases musicians Nearly three years after Congress passed the law, the federal government has implemented a rule that will require airlines to allow musicians to carry their instruments onto flights. usatoday.com
11. There was a stampede for Mark King two years ago, and we survived. And a different kind of stampede for John Taylor (middle-aged Duranettes, as opposed to middle aged slap-mad bassists).
12.
I had to do that on my 'vette too. Thought it might ave just been me.
You're not alone. I asked the question on FB (I've got lots of BCers there too) and I was told by many who use 5 stringers with flats that the problem is all too common.
13.
Mmmmmmmmm ... intonation.
I'm ready to get rid of the spring on the low B's saddle on this one too, if that's what you're referring to!
14. Here with its fretted "twin" I got a few months ago. More and better photos to follow once I've replaced the rounds with D'Addario Chromes
15. It's just worth remembering that current/contemporary Warwick necks are as thin as those of any other make. They were thicker only for a short period in the 1990s IIRC.
16. I own a Rockbass Corvette 5 fretless, and I'm waiting for Thomann to deliver me another, this time a Corvette Pro. If you are a fan of the Warwick sound, which I definitely am, and don't mind them being a bit on the heavy side, their fretless models are every bit as good (sound-wise, quality-wise and playability-wise) as the fretted ones - and the fingerboard is usually ebony
17. Thomastik-Infeldts for very low tension and typical flatwound sound. D'Addario Chromes for low tension (but not quite as low as the TIs) and much brighter sound. All the other makes I've tried so far are too high tension for my hands.
18. Hello Odyseus, and welcome to Basschat from another late starter! The more experienced and the teachers among our fellow Basschatters will probably add their much more informed opinions soon, but my two pence is to forget about books and online lessons, and save up for even just two or three one-to-one lessons with a good bass teacher (not a guitar teacher who does a bit of bass on the side). That money will be the best bass-related investment ever, believe me, even if you end up deciding that it's not for you. Playing with a pick is neither recommended nor discouraged. A plectrum will sound different from your fingers, and will suit certain styles and types of music better than others. If you find it easier to play with a pick, go ahead, obviously, but also get the abovementioned good teacher to show you how to play fingerstyle in an efficient, non-tiring way. And my advice would also be to ditch the IMO horrid Vox headphone amp as soon as you can afford to, and get something more expensive but better (just ask here and you will receive lots of pointers to better equipment!).
19. Only joking, it made me smile I'll tweet this meetup and the goodies again tomorrow (I tweeted it before you announced the addition of BC merch).
20.
Bass hat the next to step up and have donated some polo shirts which is very much appreciated.
"Bass hat"? At least your typo doesn't read "Asschat"...
21. Perhaps using a preamp will help and be less of a hassle?
