Excellent! Any Basschatters attending, do come and say hi to Jack and me - I'll be on duty behind the camera(s) and sharing the workload at the mixing desk.

No, if it's only got three strings it's an old-style double bass. 😱

In times like these, that's way safer than being smooched by strangers... 😉 -
What Are You Up to This New Years Eve ?

If we don't get locked down, and nobody in the band catches Omicron or is pinged etc., we are gigging with Damo And The Dynamites at a nice small pub in Buckinghamshire. There will be little space for the band and even less space for the PA and the sound engineer (me), so we'll try to simplify the setup as much as we can. 🤞 -
Googling around a bit I was able to find a couple of articles that examine the characteristics of strings in slightly more detail than the usual beginner help files. For an in-depth study of the actual properties of each metal used to create a string, though, I think we'd need to brush up on atomic physics! Presumably the structure and types of bonds in each metal's molecule is what gives the metal its characteristics. Would be lovely to see, say, a PhD study of their effects on sound. Anyone? No. No fee to pay, at least by the supplier. We got paid exactly what we invoiced, and we didn't have to add a percentage for the handling fee, unlike what we used to do with Invapay.

Thoroughly fascinating. 👍🙂

Having said that, would putting most of the bass on the PA, while keeping the amp just loud enough for you and the band, improve things? It might, as the bass channel on the PA would be EQ-able to suit the terrible-sounding room, and at least the PA has two speakers, therefore a fighting chance to offer the audience an acceptable sound.

I'm easily entertained and the orange banner announcement in the screenshot below is making me giggle. 🙄😂

It's the room plus the number of punters, plus whatever instruments you bandmates are playing. I EQ the drums on the PA (when I have the whole kit on the desk) to be complementary to the bass, so the two instruments don't fight. I try to make sure that the guitars have exactly the right amount of low-mids on the PA, and no more, so they don't clash with the bass. I work on the sound via the tablet throughout the gig, changing levels and EQ in real time, taking into account how many people arrive or leave at any given time, and of course when anybody swaps instruments on stage (bass guitar to DB, different guitars, etc.) Bass tends to sound better at a distance, because of its long wavelength. The sound on stage should be set up for the band to hear themselves and each other clearly; the main job for the audience should be left to the PA and the sound engineer (assuming there is one). Mids. When in doubt, always cut the low frequencies and boost the mids on the bass.

I think that's enough for this thread. Thanks to all who contributed, now please let's move on. -
Adam Clayton: Sexist bass comments

If we agree that describing something as 'gay' has a pejorative connotation (which I believe it has), then describing something as 'girly' is in the same category. At least in the eyes of this particular woman. At the same time, this particular woman knows that many famous people deliberately try to shock or at least be controversial because it gets them talked about and clicked on. So ther're usually best ignored, unless what they say is seriously outrageous. -

As a woman who plays bass I'm not so much offended as bored sh!tless by Clayton, his playing and the cr@p he's talking about in the bit quoted in the OP. I did not click on any links. However, the usual way to check if something is offensive or simply irritatingly idiotic, is to replace certain key words.- 176 replies

I've spread the word on Basschat's Facebook and Twitter accounts.

While I agree with that, Jack, bear in mind that adjusting any kind of soundpost requires a special tool (long, curved piece of metal, with the correctly shaped end for grabbing and moving the dowel) and the knowledge of how to use it properly, so this was never going to be as 'accessible', so to speak, as tweaking the truss rod on a bass guitar.

We've created this Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/HappyJackBass/posts/3148882842008286 For those not on FB, here is the text and image: Hope you can make it, @Piers_Williamson!

You cross-posted!

I've moved this to the upright bass section. The adjustable soundpost looks intriguing!

Band's Youtube channel - a question about followers

Incidentally, I think one of the reasons why the band got its custom option so quickly was that, according to YT Help, the system checks if you have any other website addresses with the same custom name (for instance social media accounts etc.). We have five, all of which are listed in our YT account... 😉 -

You're correct, and it's only for YT's use, because the URL works without it. https://support.google.com/youtube/thread/26510155/why-is-there-a-c-in-my-custom-url?hl=en
