Having said that, would putting most of the bass on the PA, while keeping the amp just loud enough for you and the band, improve things? It might, as the bass channel on the PA would be EQ-able to suit the terrible-sounding room, and at least the PA has two speakers, therefore a fighting chance to offer the audience an acceptable sound.

I'm easily entertained and the orange banner announcement in the screenshot below is making me giggle. 🙄😂

It's the room plus the number of punters, plus whatever instruments you bandmates are playing. I EQ the drums on the PA (when I have the whole kit on the desk) to be complementary to the bass, so the two instruments don't fight. I try to make sure that the guitars have exactly the right amount of low-mids on the PA, and no more, so they don't clash with the bass. I work on the sound via the tablet throughout the gig, changing levels and EQ in real time, taking into account how many people arrive or leave at any given time, and of course when anybody swaps instruments on stage (bass guitar to DB, different guitars, etc.) Bass tends to sound better at a distance, because of its long wavelength. The sound on stage should be set up for the band to hear themselves and each other clearly; the main job for the audience should be left to the PA and the sound engineer (assuming there is one). Mids. When in doubt, always cut the low frequencies and boost the mids on the bass.

I think that's enough for this thread. Thanks to all who contributed, now please let's move on. -
Adam Clayton: Sexist bass comments

If we agree that describing something as 'gay' has a pejorative connotation (which I believe it has), then describing something as 'girly' is in the same category. At least in the eyes of this particular woman. At the same time, this particular woman knows that many famous people deliberately try to shock or at least be controversial because it gets them talked about and clicked on. So ther're usually best ignored, unless what they say is seriously outrageous. -

As a woman who plays bass I'm not so much offended as bored sh!tless by Clayton, his playing and the cr@p he's talking about in the bit quoted in the OP. I did not click on any links. However, the usual way to check if something is offensive or simply irritatingly idiotic, is to replace certain key words.- 176 replies

I've spread the word on Basschat's Facebook and Twitter accounts.

While I agree with that, Jack, bear in mind that adjusting any kind of soundpost requires a special tool (long, curved piece of metal, with the correctly shaped end for grabbing and moving the dowel) and the knowledge of how to use it properly, so this was never going to be as 'accessible', so to speak, as tweaking the truss rod on a bass guitar.

We've created this Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/HappyJackBass/posts/3148882842008286 For those not on FB, here is the text and image: Hope you can make it, @Piers_Williamson!

You cross-posted!

I've moved this to the upright bass section. The adjustable soundpost looks intriguing!

Band's Youtube channel - a question about followers

Incidentally, I think one of the reasons why the band got its custom option so quickly was that, according to YT Help, the system checks if you have any other website addresses with the same custom name (for instance social media accounts etc.). We have five, all of which are listed in our YT account... 😉 -
Band's Youtube channel - a question about followers

You're correct, and it's only for YT's use, because the URL works without it. https://support.google.com/youtube/thread/26510155/why-is-there-a-c-in-my-custom-url?hl=en -
Band's Youtube channel - a question about followers

And... it happened! By the look of it, Damo And The Dynamites were luckier than many other bands and individuals, as the offer of a custom URL promptly appeared this morning, only 4 days after we started trying to get it. Many thanks again to all of you who helped us by subscribing! 🙏🙏🙏 As things stand, both the old gobbledigook URL and the new one with the name work perfectly. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPV6QAb2Pu-7dhX3hwgqohg and https://www.youtube.com/DamoAndTheDynamites take to the same page. The actual custom URL, however, has the extra characters c/ which are visible to admins and which, to be honest, seem to have no function other than aiding some sort of classification by Youtube. 🤔 Never mind... 😉 -
As a left-handed, 5-string bassist who plays fretted and fretless (and, God forbid, also upright 4 and 5 string!), I agree that going to an actual shop for anything that's not a Fender, 4 string, fretted bass guitar is a bit of a waste of time. Large, out of town stores are possible exceptions. What I found depressing when I was a beginner student, in my early 40s, was being offered the abovementioned 4-string Fenders even after stating at the very beginning of the conversation that 1. my hands are small, 2. I'm in proportion to my hands, so I don't want a bass with a big body, and 3. I'm actually left-handed, for real, so there's no point in suggesting I learn to play right-handed. The only concession to the above that the salesmen (all men!) would usually do was to offer a Fender Jazz, as opposed to a Precision, because the neck is so thin. What a pity its body is huge, heavy and stupidly shaped... So I think many bass players who want to look beyond Fender have been saved by the internet and the high number of good, higher-end luthiers we have in this country and abroad.

Band's Youtube channel - a question about followers
Silvia Bluejay replied to Silvia Bluejay's topic in General Discussion
LOL for a few crazy hours, and thanks entirely to you guys' help (🙏), the band had 116 followers. For some reason, Youtube has decided this morning that there's 'only' 112 of them. No visible sign of any unsubscribing in my notifications or stats. Hmmm... 🤔 No change in the absence of an option to customise the URL. 🤷♂️ On we go.... 😉😂 -

That's a possibility, but then it would involve all vids from a certain year, not just one? From what I can see, only that particular video is in such a parlous state. 🤷♂️ -
Band's Youtube channel - a question about followers
Silvia Bluejay replied to Silvia Bluejay's topic in General Discussion
Regarding @Happy Jack's pilates video, I've dug out the original .MOV file we shot at the bash, compared it with the previous, shorter version shot a couple of months earlier, and they are both fine on disk. The camera certainly wasn't 4K quality, but its output on both occasions, in broad daylight and bright artificial light, was good. That appears to suggest that a. Youtube's compression algorithm in 2014 was far, far worse than the one it's currently using, and b. At some point between 2014 and 2021 YT seems to have taken a dislike to that particular video and made an unholy mess of it. 😒 -
