Aw, great! Off to mention you in the caption. Thanks!

On a different note - I've finally written that blog entry! If you read it you will notice that I've been rather sparse with people's names throughout. Please feel free to either comment on the blog itself, or here in this thread, or PM me, and let me know if you'd like me to add your name when you appear in a photo, or if someone's playing your bass, etc. The blog can be edited at any time. And obviously, give me a shout if I got something wrong. Another question. I recorded several short clips of Laurence playing bass for us, from the "12 bar blues in G" that quickly becomes an awesome jazz improv to other bits of basslines he played while talking to us. Anyone know how to ask him for permission to upload one or two of them and link them to the blog? Mick, Lozz? The blues in G, for instance, is utterly awesome, and those who weren't at the bash might enjoy it. Thank you all in advance! http://wp.me/p2ZbyY-6H

I imagine one solution to that might be to organise a "festival" with more than one band playing from the late afternoon to the evening, perhaps preceded by a mini-bash for attending Basschatters. But of course it would be necessary to make sure we can rely on a good number of punters definitely coming along, and from a relatively large area, so that's a bit of an unknown quantity.

Excellent! Well done everybody. And I'm writing my blog as we speak. Would be lovely to have another bass bash there sooner rather than later
Is it too late to start a photo gallery of the bass on its travels?
There are photos on the relay's Facebook page, and IIRC there was a photos-only thread on here somewhere. Thomastik (TI) Strings - why do YOU use them?
Silvia Bluejay replied to Chiliwailer's topic in Bass Guitars
Strange that you would say that. I have a set of long scale TIs on my Corvette 4 and a set of short scale TIs on the Hofner, and on both the E string looks huge but sounds perfectly balanced (after height adjustment etc.) without the need of any additional trickery. Have you checked your pickups' height at the E string vs the G string? Edit: With the above I mean I hear no "jump" in tone from the big E to the thin A string. -
Excellent. Any photos from Glastonbudget?

Incidentally, I think I'll get the whole weekend ticket deal of £30 + handling fee if bought before 1st Sept 2013. http://www.londonbas...it/buy-tickets/ Hoping to see you there!

LOL and thanks to all of you! Sooo much GAS for such a little flat! But gassing for a bigger home is a no-no for now and the foreseeable future. Life wouldn't be fun if everything fell in your lap with no need for any effort DB and bowing ROCK!! \m/ \m/
-
Someone must have decided to remove that link... Checking out DB in need of repair is a good idea, and I'll consider the option if I decide to go down the real DB road, but that would have to be only after I've either re-jigged the furniture in my entire flat, and jettisoned some of it, or I've moved into a bigger flat! Thank you again Peter!
-
Excellent, thank you both! On the basis of what you say, Peter, I actually think I'm doing OK with my ribbon. But yes, if I realise I've seriously caught the bug, I'll find a teacher That elusive lefty DB is still a long way away... but my HB upright has a bridge and neck/fingerboard which are very similar to those of a real DB, so they're OK for practicing as a complete beginner for the time being.
-
Very interesting, thank you Peter! After we went to Matt McDonald's masterclass I was so inspired I actually got meself a bow! I had never actually held one in my hand, so I went online for info, and decided that French would probably be more comfortable to my wrist. (I think I was right.) I've been practicing gripping and bowing my HB upright - without a hint of rosin for the moment, to save my ears from the inevitable cacophony... If I decided to take it up seriously I would obviously have to find a teacher, but for the moment the main stumbling block for me is being sure I've tightened the ribbon to the correct tension when I'm bowing. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of advice on that detail online. I'll have a read through the site you link to

Oh, damn, is it? Time for a new camera, then?

stringing a fretted bass with flatwound strings
Silvia Bluejay replied to sprocketflup's topic in General Discussion
I have flats on all my basses, regardless of number of strings or presence/absence of frets. They sound great even on the cheapest models, and I don't see myself ever going back to rounds, really. -
Thomastik (TI) Strings - why do YOU use them?
Silvia Bluejay replied to Chiliwailer's topic in Bass Guitars
My tuppence: I love TIs for their awesome sound and for their low tension. I tend to install them on 4-stringers and reserve the somewhat brighter-sounding D'Addario Chromes for 5-stringers. I don't do rounds at all these days. -
So, why is that we are DB and EUB players?
Silvia Bluejay replied to ubassman's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Curiosity. The desire to explore all bass-related possibilities - fretless, 5-string, short scale, looong scale, and combinations of some or all the above! I still haven't had the honour of meeting a lefty double bass, though, as opposed to an EUB. Which obviously means: GAS lives on! -
PS thanks also for liking my Ignition! It's the Indonesian-made model, not the expensive German one, but it looks good and sounds pretty awesome all the same, especially now that I've installed a set of TIs on it

Thank you Dandelion! Clearing just the cache did the job - I didn't want to lose all my cookies, saved passwords and history, and thankfully that wasn't necessary

I know that the system usually takes some time to update after you've uploaded a new photo to your profile - but I uploaded a brand new one to mine more than 6 hours ago, and yet the avatar appearing in my replies is still the two-year-old photo. If I click on it, I am taken to my profile which is, instead, showing the new photo. What's going on? Thanks!

Thanks! There are many many more, and I'm still selecting the full set to go on my blog of the day

A quick selection from my billion photos of the day Happy Jack playing my cheapo Beatle bass upside down, and finding it not too bad! It was an AWESOME meetup. A big thank you to Mick and Lozz and all the other organisers who made it possible. I loved seeing old and new friends and meeting in person other people I know from the forum. Excellent work, everybody. I'm just back from a Junkyard Dogs gig where we went directly from the bash - hence my delay in joining this thread today. Look out for a massive photoblog - with additional vids! - in the next few days. I've given my details to Louise and we'll hopefully be in touch to compare notes and exchange photos
-
Yay! Will be good to see you again Although of absolutely no interest to anyone, I'll bring my new Ignition Beatle bass (LH) which I received from Thomann yesterday. Just for the hell of it
-
We'll miss those of you who can't make it, and hope we'll see you soon at another bash. Rest assured that, should you be curious to see what went on at this bash, you'll soon have an extensive, detailed photoblog courtesy of yours truly to wade through at leisure Rock on all the same you guys, whether at home with your families or out giggin \m/ \m/

bass and it's effects on marriages
Silvia Bluejay replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in General Discussion
Aw, bless - it was the exact opposite in my case. If there was one thing I had started disliking about the ex, before he walked out, was that his guitar playing had been relegated to occasional hobby, as opposed to the previous almost constant rehearsing and gigging. He had simply grown bored with it. (So it wasn't only me he was bored with, then!) So yes, another bass player (me) involved in a split. But I became a bass player after the split! Which way does that push the statistics' result?
