1. Definitely at the LBGS next year as a punter, and also hopefully as a Basschat rep, if we're allowed to have a small stand or a corner.
2. Go for it Mark! Sorry can't help, only lefty Rockbasses over here. I'm sure someone will come to your aid soon
3. Welcome to the "Lefties Ghetto", Aloysius I'm sure someone will get back to you about the G&L. In the meantime, get stuck in - the non-lefty topcs are very interesting too
4. LOL just to get back on topic, we'll have some more down time tomorrow morning. Facebook post is displayed on this site's home page.
5. I keep noticing that the site isn't as responsive as it used to be, and I've seen the ad.click.net message occasionally while clicking on forum threads or posts, so it's not just you. However, the delay could simply be caused by some extra layer of security filtering/processing being applied against bots and spammers.
6. You guys just stop scheduling gigs on the same dates as the Junkyard Dogs!! Grrrr Jokes aside, our gang will have to miss this, I'm afraid, as we'll be otherwise engaged at the George in W4. Any hope of catching this lineup on another occasion? PS Have a fantastic evening and take and publish photos and vids!
7.
Start saving for an EUB. Then a DB. That's the normal progression, isn't it?
LOL yes, except when you do it the other way round and buy an EUB first and then a fretless (5 strings in my case), followed inevitably by a 5-string EUB. No space for the DB at present, thank God!
8.
When you have a chance to use an open string, use it. That will let your brain re-set your mental intonation and give you an open string to compare your fretted strings to.
Good advice, but doing so usually sounds a lot better on double bass than it does on bass guitar, especially if you're playing twangy or boomy rounds and/or a fretless 5.
9. The neck will have the usual dots, which you can (in fact should) check periodically while you're fingering the notes, to make sure you're not too far out. As for the rest, trust your muscle memory and your ear, and just play
10. I've just tweeted this announcement for the second time today, and made it Basschat's 1000th tweet
11.
There was plenty of lefty thumb basses at the bass day last year bluejay ; ) .
I had to miss the bass day due to a bad case of snowed-underness with work! And it turned out to be a horrid project I should have avoided like the plague
12.
Grim. What percentage of the market is LH sales I wonder? Would more stock mean more sales, tricky issue for the retailers I guess. Is the lefty market place on here a good source of instruments - I've never looked tbh?
I'm not sure, it's a bit like the chicken and the egg. Perhaps if lefty instruments were easier to obtain, lefty children (and adults) would tend to learn to play in the way that's most natural to them. Instead, many force themselves - or are advised - to learn right-handed to have more choice, ready availability, cheaper price etc.
13.
How much of a problem is it being a lefty bluejay? Can you get pretty much what you want (eventually) but presumably much harder to find examples to try out I'm guessing; at least judging by what I haven't seen in the high street.
Exactly. You can order almost anything - especially from Warwick, who offer lefty models of practically every bass they sell - but the actual instrument you receive will be something coming directly from the manufacturer (if you buy new), and it won't be the classic "model you've tried and fallen in love with and bought on the spot at the shop", as there are usually no lefty models to try out and fall in love with... Having said that, a couple of the large music stores I visited in NYC offered the luxury of an entire lefty section, with a lot of guitars and also a few basses. Unfortunately, the choice tends to be limited to the usual Fender P, Musicman, Fender J, Fender something-or-other, you get the idea (YAAAWWWN!!)
14. OK, then - my next Warwick-related mission will be to find a lefty Thumb on display somewhere and try it. They didn't have a lefty in NYC when I visited. (That's possibly a good excuse to visit again soon...!)
15. Since I seem to gather that you do a lot of gigging in different styles, I would go for a second bass if you can afford it and have the space. After all, the number of lefty electric bassists and upright/double bassists is slowly increasing, now that we are no longer seen as spawn of the devil or sumfink... It's a matter of ordering a bass and waiting, as opposed to walking into a shop and grabbing one, but at least you're usually no longer met with a scornful laugh and a head-shake. You may well be able to sell on your spare bass - if one day either becomes surplus to requirements - to a younger musician. Or even to me, if I ever manage to move into a bigger flat!
16. Good stuff Posted on Tony's FB page! By the way, Jason's surname is spelled "Fraticelli" on his FB page, though (i tagged him in my post too).
17. David Ellefson's model sold by Jackson is identical to the one he plays, apparently, and comes at a price. Jackson also sell a more affordable model based on his specs. (That's what Ellefson said at the London Bass Guitar Show.) I was suitably impressed and GASsing.
18. I've tweeted this thread, and will retweet periodically. I'm not saying yes or no just yet, seeing that last year I was all for it and then I couldn't make it. This time, I'll jump on board - or won't - after you guys have decided the date and place, if there are enough takers. Thank you in advance Patch and Leftybassman for organising the meetup!
19. Right, you all got me gassing like mad, and I had only just begun to recover from that visit to the NY shop. Grrr....
20. Still on the subject of sales, I seem to have noticed a proliferation of seemingly innocent posts (under Bass Guitars, or another of the specific forums outside the Marketplace) along the lines of "I'd really like to sell X, I wonder how much it would go for?". Isn't that a way of inviting PMs and trying to make a sale by circumventing the rules, rather than a genuine request for opinions or info? Or am I being too cynical (in which case, I apologise in advance)?
21. And I can't believe nobody has uttered those two words - Geezer Butler. Four-piece band, one guitar, basslines from Heaven (oh yeah, and Hell)
22.
I have no complaints whatsoever. It a wonderful forum and very well moderated for the most part. The odd few complainers don't really indicate a trend for me.
Exactly. Keep up the excellent work, guys.
23. Thanks Norm! I also was surprised by how much rock, jazz and fusion I heard there, as well as C&W. The city rocks
