1.
I would like to play a lot of metal if possible so am looking for versatility and that 'crunchy' metal sound, I'm not sure what kind of bass would have this as well as being lightweight etc. Sorry if this seems like an easy, common sense question!
I believe that the sound is made by the way you play your instrument, and the effects you use - if any - more than by the actual make of bass. Think about this: Metallica's Rob - Warwick. Ex-Metallica Jason - Sadowsky. Megadeth's David - Jackson. Maiden's Steve - Fender... that's quite a varied list. And some of those bassists play with a pick. That, according to Ellefson, helps the bass sound cut through the guitars in the mix, as does upping the treble and mids as opposed to the bass.
2. Oh, missed your answer, apologies. Yes, I was talking about the Bay Area, and the birth of Thrash and speed metal. I was/am also a fan of big hair and spandex metal, but that sits lower in my list. And when you say it sounds like a bloody racket you sound not like my Mum (who actually appreciates) but like my Grandma!
3. Facebook album of the gig, shared by the Hammersmith Apollo: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151536151174341.1073741827.112183489340&type=3
4. PS big hair (as in permed) and spandex - nooo way, with Metallica and Megadeth. We're not talking Poison or Motley Crue or Van Halen here - we're talking Thrash!!
5. I've met both James and David in person now, and I still prefer David. Having said that, I haven't met you yet!
6.
Definite combover . I honestly don't know what you girls see in him .
LOOL! I don't care much about long hair, honest, or I would sport a long, luscious mane myself (my gym/pool routine put paid to it long ago). It's David's metal god status that sets him aside, combover or no combover . Time flies for all of us... He's been one of my bass idols since - well - forever. As a heavy metal fan in the 80s, you had Metallica with Cliff and then Jason, and Megadeth with David. All others, from Maiden's Steve and even Sabbath's Geezer to everybody else in the genre, were a tiny little bit less god-like to me. \m/ \m/
7. LOL, apologies for that... I didn't have as much time to go back to take photos of some stands as I thought I would. Then again, as I mentioned before, that probably saved you guys from having to wade through a blog containing my usual million photos
8. Heh, the stands and artists who proved too popular - i.e. were obscured by adoring crowds when I was trying to take a pic - didn't make it in the final selection because all that appeared in my photos was a series of people's backs...!
9. Just had a look at all the photos I took at the LBGS, but I don't have any of the Cort stand I'm afraid (probably didn't take any because there were too many people standing in front of it at the time). Sorry.
10. So, can we remember to keep an eye on this tour, and if it actually goes ahead without bust-ups, walk-outs etc., we should form a BC Hair Metal group and go together. Ooh yes!
11.
I mean, Basschat is getting f***ing BIG
All that also means that this site is probably very well set up for Search Engine Optimisation. I'm not surprised, considering we are all constantly using all the essential keywords relevant to bass-playing and selling/buying in our threads, and the site is gathering a lot of external referrers from the like of Twitter and FB.
12.
Does this include lefties who do everything left handed except playing the bass (and geetar)?
Traitor.
13.
Silvia, I'll bring mine too
Curious to see them, especially the bra...
14. ... not to mention leather miniskirt, fishnets, stilettos, padded corset and cropped leather jacket! (Still got all of them in my closet, only needing a bit of taking in...)
15. Knickers and bras at hand, ready to be thrown at Diamond Dave like it's 1984 all over again! \m/ \m/
16.
The gauges are because they are supposed to be balanced tension. If you look at the tensions of a standard set of bass strings, normally the D is the highest and string tension reduces on the lower strings. You are going to need to increase the weight in order to get closer to equal tension from one string to the next.
Thank you - this makes perfect sense. I noticed before how the D always seems to have the highest tension in the whole set, be it 4 or 5 strings, and regardless of whether the set as a whole is "soft" or "hard", so it's intriguing to see it's not just me the fumbling middle-aged newbie bassist noticing that Slightly OT, but I'm now curious - any particular reason why that happens?
17.
Or should I have said "Roll up roll up, getcher qualidee back to front basses here..."
18. Aw, you should have said hi! It was a totally friendly gathering of bass-mad BCers Please do join us next year (I am so going to do this all over again if they allow me to! )
19. All the best with your new job, Garey! It was a pleasure to talk to you as Warwick's representative Please make sure you change your account name but stay on the forum, we'd miss you if you disappeared.
20.
The Bass remains in the Wild West Midlands then... Anyone gonna pick this beastie up? It got an outing in sunny West Bromwich last night and is probably on the way to The Crown Inn, 23 Main St, Heather, Leicestershire, E67 2QP, next Saturday. PLEASE let me know if you are gonna pick it up there as I'm hoping to travel light next week and if no one throws their hat in the ring, it'll stay at home. C'mon people, this thing needs to get moving!
I'll make sure to tweet this post of yours tomorrow. Keep up the good work!
21. For those Londoners/West Londoners who may be interested in taking part or simply attending, the event has set the date for this year. This is from their Facebook page:
So, after a well earned break Oxjam Chiswick is back for 2013! It's Saturday 19th October. So if you'd like to play or get involved, let us know, we couldn't do it without you. x
http://www.facebook.com/OxjamChiswick Last year we saw Kit Richardson play in one of my locals, and several other bands play in other pubs and venues in the neighbourhood. Good stuff.
