1. No bass-related presents here, but I'm keeping my eye on a. the Sterling to Euro exchange rate; b. Thomann; c. Warwick (as in headstocks with "W", not "RockBass"). I might make up for the lack of presents to myself in the new year, if conditions and my bank account are favourable, and I might be tempted to splurge on a Corvette 5. GAS never goes away, really
2. I can't help, I'm afraid, but I would suggest you drop a PM to Warwick_Official on this forum - his name is Garey and he's always extremely helpful. He may be able to put you in touch with Warwick engineers or luthiers who could answer your questions. Good luck - keep us posted. And merry Christmas!
3. Thank you Tom, the same to you and the rest of Basschat. Let me post here the image I tweeted earlier today HAVE A HAPPY CHRISTMAS WITH LOTS OF BASS!
4. I'm obviously going to take my camera, and use its video feature too
5. The main problem I see here is being able to choose an individual for each category as opposed to nominating our community as a whole
6.
I find ultra-low action basses are unplayable for my style. I had a quick go on MacDaddy's custom jobbie a couple of years ago, set up for tapping and sweeping and stuff. I couldn't get a decent sound out of it! (Sounded very different when he played it, of course.) I'm an ... erm ... enthusiastic player, and I like to dig in. Most people think my action is high. Feels fine to me. And it's me what's playing the thing.
I just wish I could have a go at playing both your bass and Si's, out of curiosity, seeing that they are so radically different. I've seen and heard both of you play, and clearly your basses' setups suit your respective styles. Ah, well, never mind...
7. State The Bloody Obvious Corner: your preferences regarding action may change according to the type of strings you use. I learned to play on a student bass with a chunky neck and relatively high action, fitted with roundwounds. Then I learned how to set up a bass and lower the action and did so - my hands are tiny and not very strong, so any effort-saving measure is welcome. Then I moved on to better basses and installed flatwounds on all of them - massive shakeup! When I put TI flats on my 4 I had to tweak the truss rod dramatically and raise the action, because they are so soft. Similar - although slightly less marked - change with my 5s and their D'Addario Chromes. I still tend to prefer lowish action, but low-tension flats are allowing me a little more freedom.
8. Just stay put - you're in the right forum. Read the threads about getting a new EUB by those of us who trod the same ground before you. Then either have a look at this site's Marketplace - whatever its current shape - or log on to Thomann. You're on a wonderful journey and already there's no turning back. And you will fall deeply in love. (Take my word..)
9. Facebook event now up - please join us there too! http://www.facebook.com/events/309402535805923/
10. Some ISPs have spam filters that get rid of messages before they end in our inboxes. That may explain why some of you have found messages in your own spam folders while others never received anything at all.
11. Welcome. Lastnotleast! On reading the title of this thread I feared someone was going to have a rant at some girl who dumped them or sumfink... Glad to find another member joining from the States instead. As Bert says, this is a very friendly forum and our collective knowledge will get you out of practically any trouble, and not just of the bass-related kind! So get stuck in..
12. It's shaping up to be a BC Brum Meetup! Anyone else in the area or planning to come along?
13. One day I'll ask you if I can borrow your Nellie to get rid of some of those feline vermin infesting my garden, Chris...
14. Welcome Squidman! Remember, Fender is emphatically not the only make of bass you can look at. And, the choice is far wider than between P or J (as generic types of bass). I would suggest you find a nice music store in your German town or its vicinity (if you happen to live anywhere near Thomann or Warwick, I sooo envy you!!), and look at, and play, and listen to as many models of bass you can get you hands on. Doesn't matter whether you can actually play one or not, you can ask the guys at the store for help. Do it! Have fun!
15. We'll see you there, Jerry! Thanks for posting this.
16. I'll try that too, later. The string spacing on 5ers might not help, though.
17. I still need to try mine on the 4, and the fretless 5, and the upright (if the clamp can fit somewhere). I'll have a little fun tonight
18. Thank you all for your advice, guys! I received my D'Addario Planet Waves mini tuner this morning, and I've just tried it. Good points: - The adjustable clamp - very clever - Reversible display for us lefties - Tiny! Slightly less good point: - Still takes a while, and/or a few plucks, to decide if my B string is in tune or not. (At least, though, it doesn't have problems with the E string.) Excellent buy for a little less than £12 and free delivery from Amazon. Edit - the tuner wasn't touching the strings, even if in this photo it looks like it is.
19. And Badass is doing his bit for the Xmas spirit here: http://basschat.co.u...m-british-lion/
20.
Another innuendo
Stop forcing me to make inhuman efforts to ignore them all!!
21.
Pull the other one, it's got Christmas bells on it!
But I did a good job of ignoring it and posting a non-innuendo'd reply, right?
22.
Sylvia knows full well I could never be accused of innuendo.
Of course not, I wouldn't dare...
