1. LOL! I didn't know of their existence. Here they are in all their glory http://www.letsmaketragedyhappen.com/music.html (Huuuge fun!!) And also, of course: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4CMGbs1-rI
2. I paid £1.68 handling fee for my Saturday ticket. I would also be curious to know how to get a handling-fee-free one from Bass Direct! Daz - do you know of any others who would like to go to the show from outside London? If there's enough of you, you could drive down here and share petrol costs, and maybe get twin rooms somewhere affordable, and make it a weekend away and visit a few music shops or sights, etc. Ped - is that idea of having a BC corner at the show any closer to happening?
3. Bless - these guys have been going for more than 10 years, and when they first appeared we trad Metallica fans didn't know whther to cry anathema, laugh out loud or, you know, shut up and listen to them But they're good, and haven't vanished into thin air after a few months, despite losing their novelty value.
4. Thanks Paul - I'm not entering, as my composing skills are even worse than my bass playing! But I'd be happy to follow as Basschat and be followed by you on Twitter for further spreading the news and occasional chatting
5. I've tweeted this several times already! Paul, are you guys on Twitter? I can't seem to find you there for mutual following.
6. I've just added my name to your FB event. I, my camera, and very probably Happy Jack will be seeing you all there!
7. Bump to remind that the Early Bird expiry date is fast approaching. I've got a ticket for the Saturday, and am still tempted to get one for the Sunday. Anyone else already got tix?
8. Welcome Bezinga! Never too late to start (I'm a latecomer myself)! However, I would recommend taking some one to one lessons exactly at this stage, to help you avoid acquiring bad habits which you'd find very hard to get rid of if left unnoticed.
9.
i use powerchords mainly, or my own variation of a chord lol i'm brewing an idea in my head, but it always comes out metal.... grrr
Thumbs up on both accounts! Go for it
10. Yup, same in my Rockbasses. Warwick are now using a differently designed bridge which avoids the problem. Older Warwicks are stuck with it, though. The very max gauge you can use on the low B is 132 by stripping the silk and filing the thick end a little.
11. Thanks Fran - that sounds interesting. The reason why I asked is that I got close to one of those basses at the Bass Show last year, but it obviously was a righty model. All I could do was look at it and touch it with reverence. Many thanks to one of the guys at Bass Direct who decided I should have a pic taken with it! (The bass looks much more photogenic than me on this one...)
12. GAS acquires a different dimension when you play left-handed, because you have to deal with the additional problem of finding out whether the model you'd like to have actually exists as a lefty... that can result either in you not being able to spend your money, or you having to spend more than you planned at first. I'm still gassing for a real double bass which I still would have no space for in my flat, and which would have to be a decent "native" lefty - making the whole idea a very long-term dream of mine As for the occupational hazard of decapitation by bass-neck, I suppose it's not as bad as decapitation by egomaniac guitarist or mike-swinging vocalist prancing around...
13. Genuine question, possibly slightly off-topic: are basses with fanned frets easier or harder to play, or does the design make no difference at all?
14. Hi Ellie! Yup, another Warwick fan here - they're small and sound great, even the cheapo versions I have If I compare my list of gear in my first post with that in my present sig, I notice I must have given in to a certain amount of GAS during these 12 months... But it's obviously not over - GAS is never really over!
15. Gene Simmons, the tongue would be closer, I guess. Edit: to echo Deb, I also appear to look like the wife or the mother of the bass player when i'm in shops. I wonder why?
16. Oi! LOL! In fact, I appear to have totalled 1,624 posts so far, so there must be quite a few in Off Topic - mostly on the monthly photo comps threads I think... Honest, guv, I really try to make relevant posts whenever I can...
17. Thank you GUI! This really is a fantastic place to be.
18. I have reference dots on the fingerboard (as opposed to the side of the neck) of my NXT5, and find them helpful for keeping intonation, obviously. However, their presence also makes me look at my fretting hand far more often than I do on my other upright, and that's something I'd prefer to avoid, especially as I tend to read as opposed to memorise (I know, I know!). So it's a bit of a mixed blessing. Musical ear and muscle memory are best.
19. Also, play as many open strings as possible, so that you hear a reference pitch as often as you can. Believe it or not, that's more helpful than you think.
20. Aw, thank you Shell and Bert! Us girls will meet up in person again soon - we'll find an excuse - and Bert, until this country legally allows polygamy, I'll have to take my time whilst choosing only one of you wonderful guys...
21. First anniversary bump! I've been a member of Basschat for exactly a year today, and loved every moment. I can safely say that being part of this community has not just helped my cofidence as a - still very amateurish - bass player, but also changed my life for the better by allowing me to meet a fantastic group of friends in person, as well as giving me several equally great long-distance (BC/FB/email) friendships. I'm also delighted that I've been welcomed as a regular poster by the whole community and invited by the owners and admin team to help a little with running the site (on Twitter). Here's to many more years as a happily active Basschatter, and hopefully as a bassist. And to all you guys and gals, a big thank you for collectively being by far the best online community I've ever been a part of. I hope life is/will be as good to you as it has been to me so far.
22. Phew, I've finally had a listen, and voted for Rockford Stone because... because deep down I'm just a metalhead! \m/ All entries are outstanding, though, and I loved hearing all the different styles inspired by the photo. I'm in total awe of you guys as composers. Well done all. Keep up the good work.
23. Ahhhh, good, another disco fan... welcome Steve!
