1. True, it depends on the kind of audience and their alcohol levels
2.
This was never a problem with my old function band as we were all good improvisers/buskers and could all read music, so of a request was made we'd promise it after the break, get it on the phone/Internet in the interval and agree a lead sheet and busk it in the second half. If we liked it, it got added to the 'new songs to learn properly in reheasals' list Don't see what the big deal is with requests to be honest. If you're in a function band and play covers that people want, you can't JUST play covers that YOU think are right for the people paying you at the end of the night!
I see your point, and that's awesome (not everybody would be able to do that). Then again, you may "busk it" only to have the audience object and say (not always to your face) that it sounded nothing like the original or that the guitar solo was unrecognisable etc. I've spent many years in the audience, as opposed to on stage, so I know that that happens - a lot!
3. Sigh. Equal blame to both and let's forget about it
4.
Aparently, they still made records after 1979, but I don't believe it personally
Only heavy metal, and that ended in 1993.
5.
Being a band jukebox has always been a dream of mine. A book at the front of the stage with a list of all the available songs...request made...band plays track.
You would still need to have that book with the list! But that's a fun idea, although it might encourage idiots to think that any band can play requests, even without a list to choose from...
6.
My band is actually called "Not a Jukebox" Hope the punters get the hint
Alternative name: Not A DJ Bunch of idiots who have no idea that playing music requires learning and rehearsing songs, unlike playing a record, and should stick to the latter.
7. Hello Cetus, and welcome! There are a number of us who started playing bass only a few years ago, and I for one have found the advice on this site to be absolutely invaluable, as well as the people to be very welcoming and ready to help. I'm sure you'll love being part of the family
8.
A smidgeon of bad luck with the DBs but - at the risk of sounding like some TV engangelist - I consider myself a lucky person - I fell into a great band and just celebrated 21 happy years of marriage. Try not to puke everyone Put in that context, a dent and a broken bridge ain't such a biggie!
QED re. my previous post about the kind of person you are - coming from another one who considers herself lucky despite having received a few knocks every now and then. Good luck with your DB - I would skip this Friday and wait.
9. I'd have to sell up and find a bigger flat first! Or get rid of the guest room and turn it into a music room. I don't think my parents and my other visitors from Italy would be too impressed if I did, though, so it's dream on for the time being.
10.
Good job I didn't mention I work in a bank
That has no detrimental effect whatsoever on you being a thoroughly nice person
11. YAY! Excellent news. I sooo want a real DB to add to the uprights... but for now I'm dreaming on.
12. Commiserations! Do you have a second DB you can play while you wait for the overhyped, overexpensive Olympic madness to end?
13. I can't help you either I'm afraid, but I'll echo fumps' welcome. Also, regarding your DB's action in particular, the obvious question is, is the bridge one piece or adjustable through thumbscrews? Either case, do have a read through these threads on here: http://basschat.co.u...idge-questions/ http://basschat.co.u...on-double-bass/ and see if you feel like having a look around by yourself, even just out of curiosity, before you go to a luthier. And by the way, you'll fall head over heels in love with your DB. There is no way back once you've been bitten!
14. Friday 27th? I might well make it. I've pencilled it in pending a couple of possible commitments. Do post the gig here too please, preferably in a separate thread. Hopefully I'll see you there next Friday! Edit: Paco and his fellow guitarists, dancers and choir were amazing. They got two standing ovations at the end, and played two encores.
15. I hope the performers will have a few more people in the audience than just you and me...! See you there.
16. Will do, thanks - it's a pity I'm missing you guys. I hope someone will take lots of photos and let us see them! All the best for the gig. Please keep us posted about your future gigs in West London. You say it's your last gig for this year - are your band taking a break from gigging for a few months?
17. Will make sure to get to the Blues festival before 2 then, and hopefully I'll find you there, Paul.
18. I always turn the Warwick forum chat off when I log on there! I think it does detract from the content that would otherwise end up in the normal threads and be there for all to enjoy.
19. Paul - afraid I'll be at Paco Peña's gig that night but, for anyone else in the area, where exactly are you playing?
20. Hey, don't rush to conclusions - I 'm thinking of popping in, weather permitting!
21.
Hmm. OK then, how about this: I'll tell you something very interesting about my arse - for a pound. Any takers? Eh? Eh?
I love it when you raise the tone of a thread like this, Mark
22.
I started playing rock music in my teens and soon hair started growing in all the weiredst places ! So I cut down on rock music and played more Jazz to stop the effect !
Hmmm...
