1. Thanks for this thread, Kiwi. I think many of us may be a bit depressed due to the dreadful weather - I certainly am! We're supposed to be in summer and I go out wearing my winter jackets and always carrying a big umbrella. Sigh. I also tend to avoid posting in Off Topic, as it's not the main reason why I joined BC. I do post in the photography threads, though. I quickly read through any other topics out of curiosity, but usually don't get involved. Incidentally, huge respect to those here who underwent vasectomy - couldn't refrain from reading that thread. In my life in a couple, it was always understood that I would be the one to undergo the snip (actually, surgical tying of the ovary ducts), never ever my partner. You guys are awesome, and your partners should be proud and grateful. Edit: I never did have the operation, though - no need, in the end. Edit 2: apologies - will post my final OT comments in the correct thread. Please ignore them.
2. Public FB album - the quality of photos on FB is crap, I'm afraid. I'll be happy to give you the original files, Clarky, should you like any of the shots. 3. Heh - I'm painfully aware of that, believe me. I use skype-to-phone to call my parents in Italy, and Thomann at any available opportunity, and it's much cheaper than using a landline or a phonecard.
4. Back from the gig! Loved it. Thank you so very much Clarky and All The Queens' Ravens for an excellent performance, and thank you Sean (Billyapple) for driving me home. Lovely to meet Wayne and Alistair too. I'm still getting to grips with the new camera, but some of the photos taken tonight seem to be OK. This is one, more to follow as an album when I've had the time to sort the good from the bad ones.
5. I've said it before, I'll say it again - if you have a problem or a query, call them, don't email. They are incredibly efficient on the phone but very slack on the email. And yes, they do speak English, some even natively, as some of the operators tele-work from other European countries, including the UK.
6. Another happy customer. Bought lots from them, no problem so far, only one minor glitch that was solved quickly.
7. 45-132, D'Addario Chromes. I'm addicted to low tension flats
8. Should have gone to Florence and brought back some Chianti instead.
9. Same here, late last night/early this morning - only the home page was accessible. When I clicked on any forum the holding page would appear. If that's saved us from another attack, that's a clever system, and it has the added benefit of letting us [s]addicts[/s] users know that something may not be right with the server and it's not our browser's fault.
10. There with my new camera - using you guys as a test run
11. Welcome to Basschat! Not sure how to call you - if you're female it's a bit strange to call you Bernard I think that gear helps your appreciation and performance of music, rather than being an end to itself, but nice equipment is admittedly very sexy!
12.
Depending on where you move to BJ you could get a bigger place, a DB and some loose change left
Well, I would need to stay in the area, I just couldn't leave the BC Chiswick posse at this stage, could I?
13. Ooooooooo handbags at dawn I want a DB too, but I need to move to a bigger place first, which means a DB would end up costing me around £500,000*, give or take a few thousand... Edit: London W4 price of a not-too-upmarket, reasonably large flat.
14. This is a hugely interesting thread. Thanks for starting it, Lewk. I doubt i'll ever be involved myself, but you guys are making sense of quite a few memories I have of events and situations. Edited - apologies for misspelling, Lewk!
15. Welcome, Mandy! You've come to the right place
16. Heh. On my double-bass-like upright I've had the A string buzz (it was the tuning peg's wings, as mentioned!), the need to mute the strings below the bridge because they seem to love echoing the notes I play (sigh!), and the mysterious buzz-when-you-fret-a-C (3rd fret on the A string). I want to believe that the latter is just me fretting ineptly, but I'm still investigating... All very intriguing. I so wish I could find the space for a real DB at home.
17.
inevitably suffer from runaway scrotal adhesion.
Ah, so there is one advantage to being a female bass player then - nothing of the sort can happen to me
18. No prob guys! Took me a few seconds to realise that Garey's original link was in German - despite my knowledge of German being basic at best. The page just looked familiar and full of words I knew... that's the miracle of music
19. I feel like I still have an awful lot to learn on here, and I don't mean regarding scales, modes or playing techniques
20. I'm clearing my schedule and hoping to be there!
21. Here you are http://basscamp.gitarrebass.de/index_e.html
22. Welcome to the forum, from the equally low end on this side, Dingo! (A big, fat, thundering, low B!)
23. NS seem to recommend using their special set of 5, I guess not just because they are of the correct length and gauge, but also because - at least on my NXT 5 - the low B and the E are slightly different, and feel a bit rougher than the others (I think they may be groundwounds as opposed to flatwounds). That way, their sound is slightly brighter and creates fewer problems with the low frequencies when amplified. However, NS also says that it's perfectly possible to use "real" double bass strings, and that stringing through the body shouldn't make any difference (I haven't tried it, though). Assuming that a set of 5 double bass strings can be found, I imagine that would be the only way to obtain a good double-bass-like sound - I find that the current setup makes my bass sound electric despite me tweaking the pots and switches in any way possible.
24. Aw, welcome Marcus! xxx Warwicks - oh yes. One day I'll get a real-McCoy Corvette fretless 5. One day.
25. Only thing that doesn't convince me is the 15 minutes slot... seems a bit short. In any case, if I can find out more info the next time I - alone or with you, if you like, Jack - go there, I'll post updates.
