1. Oh, that'd be fantastic, Garey, thanks. The town looks beautiful, and it's famous for luthiery, a bit like Cremona in Italy, but yes, judging by the maps on the website it seems a bit far from everywhere, so any info about how to actually travel there from the airport would very useful. I'm seriously thinking about going, although I need to see how a couple of projects pan out before I can commit. Fingers crossed Thanks again!
2.
...you say "I'm buying a new G string" and people don't think you're a cross dresser...
But they suddenly become willing to accompany you to the shop when you're a woman saying that
3.
When you find yourself talking to your instrument. Lately I've noticed myself saying 'in you go!' or 'out you come!' to the Fender when putting it in and taking it out of the gig bag. Though I'm not sure if that's the sign of being a real musician or a really mad old spinster
LOOOL - but you're not a spinster, you're closer to being a divorcee I don't talk to my instruments (yet!) but I've given names to some of them... I suppose I'm in good company though - IIRC a number of you guys name their basses too, and obviously so do/did some big names in music. So it's all right, is it? IS IT???
4. Garey, what's the nearest or most convenient airport to Markneukirchen, do you know? (Will google too, eventually.)
5.
This thread has now entered the realm of utter fantasy.
Or you may get a bassist as a groupie...
6. Haha, repair to clothing? Never tried that so far (but obviously, never say never)
7. I would actually tend towards either A or B - if your missus is supportive, and kudos to her, I know how it feels - just because you might actually lose not just this tour but the organisers/promoter themselves, who might like to keep the other guy instead. It's down to how much you need them for future gigs and how likely you think they are to ruthlessly replace you.
8. You're a real musician when you ask "what key is this in?" before joining in a singalong (yes, it happened to me, I wasn't quick enough to stop myself asking...)
9.
You are a real musician when... you can no longer get car insurance or a mortgage.
I couldn't get a decent mortgage before I became a musician either (self-employed, y'know, so opted for stumping up the cash). Now there are no fewer than two reasons why I wouldn't get a mortgage if I wanted one. Heh.
10.
She may already have gone - you wouldn't notice.
11. Taken from one of my FB status updates - one of my friends there PM'd me suggesting I start a fun thread on here too. Signs that you are a real musician, No 1 - at the first glimpse of a ray of sunshine, rush to music corner and make sure the curtain is drawn and the gear is in the shade. Then, and only then, notice the nice weather.
12. I'll be there with my camera as always Will try to muster my football gene ((C) my friend Stew, who assumes I should have it, as I'm Italian. Hmm) and get into the spirit...
13.
I used to have the Deep Purple/Rainbow one on my bedroom wall when I was a kid. Was it out of 'Sounds'? I never bought MM or NME.
Kerrang, IIRC? I might still have it, hiding in humidity-proof plastic bags somewhere in the shed
14. Tempted! It even looks cheap from this side of the Channel. Will seriously give it a thought. I had seen the event mentioned in the Warwick newsletter before, but thank you for posting it here as well, Garey.
15. LOL! Heh. I know they have two sessions, and it's Ronnie Scott's and all that, but I find it a bit exorbitant, in the literal sense of "out of my pockets' orbit"...
16. I would but there's a Big Stumbling Block - cheapest ticket £65. Has to be no, then. Pity.
17.
In no particular order... Silddx Big Red X Clarky erm... that's it.
Love this list
18. I'm not sure whether I agree with G in disliking Krist because he's not good enough, or because I can't stand Nirvana. I had to learn two of their songs for my bass classes and hated every note.
19. Not a fan of Rob Trujillo (see my list of fave bassists in the other thread, containing Cliff and Jason but not him!), but hell, he CAN play.
20. Damn, RolandRock, you're right, forgot Carol Kaye and Gary Willis. No particular order in my list above either.
21. Cliff Burton Jason Newsted Geezer Butler David Ellefson Ian Hill Steve Harris James Jamerson Duck Dunn Stanley Clarke Marcus and Jaco - in a more indirect way as I don't seem to listen to their stuff all the time. I would like to add that no individual bass player inspired me to learn to play the instrument - I was mostly driven by the desire to "dissect" (so to speak) and play the songs I like, and especially the old ones (any genre) which I have liked for most of my lifetime.
22.
I usually say "Thanks, glad you liked it. Thanks for coming. Are you a bass player?" Then get into a massive argument over why I don't play a fender and whether the second note of the fourth bar in the third song should have been an E or a G#.
Best post in this thread BY FAR!
23.
Because some people can't say what they don't mean
As in "What? Of course I was fan-frigging-tastic on stage, how dare you even assume I could ever be otherwise?" Doesn't sound like something a bass player would usually say, but does sound like some singers and some lead guitarists!
24.
Again, I respect your opinion. However, I still cant get my head around someone who cant simply SAY thanks.
But we ARE in agreement - sorry for not being clear enough. I'm just saying that being unable to say thanks in this case usually isn't as rude or awkward as in other social situations.
