1.
I agree, but IMO someone who cant simply say "thanks", lacks basic confidence, regardless of "excessive", "over confident" or the instrument in question. You dont have to be an egotist to say thanks.
Yes, but there are ways of expressing gratefulness for a compliment even without uttering a word. All a bit too subtle for someone, but not for others. Also, we are talking about a special situation in this case, I think, not quite the same as giving a presentation at the office etc., as music is art, and isn't "measurable" in the same way as other kinds of performance.
2.
I would say this is a simple lack of confidende and down to personality, rather than any instrument related issue.
It's instrument-related only in the sense that bassists tend not to be over-confident arses like - erm - some other musicians Lack of excessive confidence is not a bad thing, and does not equate total lack of confidence.
3. Aw, how sweet of you guys. As a veteran member of an audience, I have learnt to compliment bass players' ability only indirectly, because a bass player's normal reaction is to blush and/or not know what to say, or even how to say thank you without feeling awkward (yes, Jack, I'm talking about you as well! ). Drummers are often like that as well. I think it's an endearing tract most of us share, and it's not bad manners at all in my view.
4.
I play bass in a band and we play Jazz Standards and Bublé songs - great fun!
Jealous (of your ability to play jazz standards, I mean! ). Welcome to the fold, Harry. Plenty of multi-instrumentalists and especially bassists-guitarists here - you'll feel at home.
5. Sorry to hear about your troubles, Clarky. Every time Metallica come to a festival in this country I'm sooo tempted to go, be it the "Fab Four" with Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, or Download, or whatever... and then chicken out miserably out of fear of exactly what happened to you. I see Andy's point about big outdoor gigs with camping being fun, whatever the weather etc., but I assume he's younger than us I used to do the various Monsters Of Rock festivals when I was in my 20s, but even then, my ex and I always made sure we went to the Italian and/or Spanish legs, as the weather in those countries was bound to be less inclement!
6. Welcome Lee! Squier is not the only option. Do visit a shop and try out a few basses - you may find something in the same budget that you like better. (I for one am not a fan of Squier or Fender basses myself, soundwise and looks-wise.)
7. Looks good! Please keep us posted about any future gigs of yours in London.
8. Welcome, John! I'm afraid I can't hellp you with your question, but I'm confident that one or more of the experts will read this thread and offer advice. Nice bass (and young son)!
9. Apologies - didn't make it in the end... I hope I'll have another opportunity to see you guys soon. Hope it was a good one. If you have any photos, please post them!
10. I would love to come see you guys - haven't been to the 100 Club for aaages... I won't know until tomorrow, due to a possibly overlapping engagement, but if I can make it, I'll be there.
11. Sigh, you're too far... if you come a bit closer to us BCers down sarf, do give us a shout. All the best for tonight, post photos if you get any taken!
12. Welcome, D! Please do tell us more about your touring with metal bands, I'm all ears
13. Two words - Black Sabbath. You'll be fine, fill in the guitar void with the bass and it will sound awesome. \m/
14. Public FB album from last night https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150945417434207.441870.528729206&type=1&l=6ab3d6463e
15. So we officially have reason to agree that playing a Warwick is eminently cool
16. I was in favour of the Like button exactly as it is on FB, where it saves posting +1s and Hear Hears (or "Here Here's"!) but doesn't get counted into a popularity contest. I'm against the Dislike option - I tend to articulate my opinion, if it's contrary to the one expressed by the poster and I'm willing to debate. Otherwise I forever keep my peace
17. Went to see Now Loaded and the other bands at Camden Rock tonight, and loved it. Thank you Mark for posting this gig! Photos to follow on FB - and one or two of them probably also on here - as soon as I've had time to review them.
18. +1 to binning IE and getting FF - works fine, although this site is still, occasionally, a bit slow (nothing to do with our browsers, and all to do with the hosting server, I reckon).
19. I'm determined to make it! Even if I will probably end up being the oldest person in the audience, what with the age of the average rock punter in Camden etc.
20.
I actually really like open strings, I don't think they sound bad at all, and play them a lot, seems odd not to, but on fretless or upright I use them even more as an intonation reference.
They don't necessarily sound "bad" but they muddle the sound when you play a lot of them in succession (E and A for instance, etc.). The same doesn't seem to happen on a DB. My NXT, however, has reference dots on its fingerboard so I try to fret the notes when possible.
21.
I do that and I find what's most interesting about it is that, often, I'm really not going to play exactly the same on the upright. It's likely to be simplified and to contain more open strings.
Yup, but that happens to me on the HB, which looks and - more importantly - sounds much more like a double bass than my NXT. On the latter, too many open strings sound as bad as they do on bass guitar, due to the type of strings it's got on and its passive electronics.
22. Hello and welcome! I'm a member of that other forum too
23. Beside the "hacked by" banner there were a few words in Arabic and a segment of a script. And some screen names made of upper and lower case letters. But I can't remember exactly what they were.
24. Until a few minutes ago I got a page with "hacked by the Muslim Hackers" or something to that effect.
25. Incidentally, has New Model Army's website been hacked...? If this is/was the correct one. http://www.newmodelarmy.org/
