1. Welcome zipideebass from a fellow Warwick, NS EUB and low B string addict!
2. I've just copied your initial post on to the Bass Players In London's Facebook page. Hope you recover all of your gear.
3. Am I the only one who likes to try out on the upright the easier basslines I learn on bass guitar? Pop or rock, or whatever I've been learning at the moment, I will try just for fun, unless the bassline's too fast or jumps around the fretboard too much for my present skills.
4. Yay! Looks like fun! And you guys even had a little stage space to stretch out. Good to know you had plenty of punters The reason why there aren't more pubs with live music licences is probably the red tape and the noise regulations they have to comply with, as well as (I think) the extra insurance etc. - at least this appears to be the situation in London.
5.
I don't give a monkeys-chuffbox about what people think about stuff like this. You have to call it something. Even if you called it something really cool, like the 'The Cathedral In Worship Of The Sonic Rumble-Hammer', someone would pick fault. I think the fact that the site can be called asschat at certain angles is a bit of comic genius and makes the place all the more endearing. Myself, I came on here nearly 2 years ago asking questions about valve amps.. and ended up with a full on Matamp rig. In the meantime I have.. Made friends Fell out with people Apologised and made friends with them Been to gigs with BC'ers playing Bought gear Sold gear Received top notch pro-advice Had bass lessons Auditioned for a name band Auditioned for unknown bands Met with other BC'ers in real life and got drunk with them Bought a Basschat shirt that was too big Won a competition I think Basschat is great, who cares about the name.... PS. Next weekend I'm off to see my pal in Brighton, and guess what? Our very own Big Red X is playing with Dick Venom and the Terror-tones, and I'm going. Plus I might be able to get a try-out on a Lakland Decade belonging to a fellow BC'er. How cool is that? Thank you asschat!
I've only been here 7 months, but in such a short time I have been helped with my bass playing by this site's collective knowledge, been inspired to purchase and play new gear I wouldn't otherwise have considered, found new friends I really, really like, and been to other members' gigs, alone or with other BCers. And hopefully I've contributed to the site a little bit too, with tiny nuggets of advice on the few things I know about, and by trying to organise real life meetups. Long may BC continue to thrive
6. Tempted! I need to check whether I can make it there in time - if I can, I'll be there. Off to like your band's FB page. Hopefully see you tomorrow!
7.
......and no lefty's?
Exactly. Quite galling, seeing that the model is promoted by Macca.
8. LOL I agree that being banned over that is out of order.
9. As far as I'm concerned, the song I'm playing will suggest, or even dictate, the bass I play it with - be it because it needs 5 strings, or because it sounds more rawk 'n roll on one or the other, etc. I've got multiple basses but they are all different, and suited to different uses.
10. I'm intrigued. Please do tell us what you said.
11. Have fun at your gig, Geoff - post photos if you get any taken. Hopefully the weather should be less dreadful today. And when you get to see the luthier, keep us posted on his work on your bass - the info will be useful to others who may be in the same predicament.
12. By the way, I've found an article among my DB-related bookmarks that may be of some help, even if only to know what the luthier will have to do, if you prefer not to work on your bass yourself: http://www.dennishavlena.com/bassetup.htm Looks very basic but it has drawings an' all
13.
Not only do I waste entire evenings on BC, but it's opened up a new social life for me where I actually get out the house, meet real people and listen to their music. BC's enough for me. I think there will be a point where BC overtakes Twatter and Facebunk
Yes! In the meantime I'm on all three, as well as on real life
14. My NS NXT 5 has a round fingerboard too. Edit: and my HB as well.
15. I'm sure that the experts on this forum will help you with more detail, but in the meantime, these are my answers to your questions. Yes, that sort of action seems way too high to me. If the height of the bridge isn't adjustable, it will need to be cut to measure by an expert in order to reduce the action for comfortable playing. The bridge tends to go out of shape when you tune the bass, due to friction, especially if there is little or no graphite or other suitable lubricant in the grooves where the strings rest. But to answer your question,no, that's not right, it needs to be adjusted. I would suggest you take your bass to a luthier.
16.
I've always thought that those who snigger at other peoples' specialist interests or hobbies - trams, philately, house bricks, whatever - are entirely deficient in the virtues of empathy, wisdom and politeness. That they freely articulate such views in the belief that they are demonstrating their innate superiority speaks volumes about their witlessness. It's rather like the person who says "You read books? God, how boring" and howls with idiot laughter. You don't know whether to pity them or lure them to a subterranean cavern and butcher them in the interests of the wider public good. .
Hear hear.
17. There is a subforum dedicated to "Other Instruments" already!
18. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, but that's just me, I guess. Personally, I hate the fact that a righty's body will not be shaped to be comfortable when resting against the lefty player's body. I find the look of an upside-down bass or guitar all wrong. I also dislike having the effing knobs touch my wrist when I play. Edit: I have tiny hands and fingers and yet manage fine with a 5-string Warwick! If I was you I wouldn't be too worried about the size of the neck - it's probably just a matter of good playing technique, and some practice.
19. They are forecasting dreadful weather for London on Sunday and Monday. Cold as well. So perhaps summer is being suspended for a while (sigh), and that may be one more reason for us to move the meetup to another weekend.
20. Monday is 4th June. I might make it but not 100% sure at this stage. Perhaps the date is a bit too close to be sure many of us aren't booked on other commitments?
21. I'd be up for it too. Re. gender stereotyping - try being unable to drive at all, and also hopelessly crap at reading maps (oooo!) and at the same time being the one the car mechanic, the plumber, the IT engineer etc. talk to when they have to explain a problem, 'cos you're the one who knows what they're talking about...
22. I have no problem tweaking anything stringed - truss rod, intonation with saddles, string height at bridge and nut, turning right-handed uprights into left-handed ones, done it all, so no issue with the truss rod I do see your point about those flats still being - well - the same flats I hated before. I'll keep the rounds then. They are new and don't smell at the moment - I've been using Fast Fret on them hoping to keep them as clean as possible. We'll see.
23. The strings simply happen to be a lot thicker and tougher to persuade into a coil at the tuning pegs! Especially the B (on a 5) and E strings, obviously.
24. I'm intrigued, as my acoustic has phosphor bronze rounds on. I love the sound, both when amplified and not, but I do prefer flats wherever possible. Can you stick on the acoustic any type of flats you use on electric basses? Or are high-tension ones not to be recommended? I have a spare set of Fender flats which I took off my Corvette 4 because they were far too high tension for my taste (I put a set of Thomastik-Infeldt in their place). Worth experimenting with, do you reckon, or would I end up loathing them the same way I did on the Corvette?
25. Love the Ferrari cars poster on the wall in the workshop - that EUB is probably the musical equivalent...
