  1. The sound may also depend on whether you mainly bow or pluck. It might be easier to get a DB-like sound in the former case, maybe?
  2. Damn, I was about to correct my post but you beat me to it! GARY. Sorry.
  3. I don't know, Gareth. What I meant is that if you go on, say, the Sunday, it will make no difference to the programme whether you buy an advance ticket or an on the door ticket. I didn't mean to say that the programme on Saturday and Sunday is the same.
  4. You're referring to 'Advance Saturday' and 'Advance Sunday' on the tickets page, am I right? In that case, 'Advance' refers to the ticket, not the day. Advance Sunday simply means 'the price of a Sunday ticket if bought in advance', i.e. not on the door when you arrive at the venue on the Sunday. (That will be more expensive.) The Saturday and the Sunday programmes/events are exactly the same whether you buy an advance ticket or one on the door.
  5. As the great David Ellefson says in a Facebook post from yesterday, The cancer has no hope!
  6. If it's the same person I have in mind, yes, definitely! But nothing is confirmed just yet.
  7. Imagine if he had bought an Alikat aluminium double bass for me too, to justify buying his... 😮😎
  8. LOL if @Happy Jack and I followed the same pattern on each new purchase, we'd own even MORE basses that we already have! (His kids don't live with us and earn more than us, and I only 'do' cheap shoes... )
  9. Thank you Andy for reminding us that not all musicians' wives are idiots. 😎
  10. Still weirdly upside down, though! 😂
  11. He also appears to play upside-down lefty, a major faux pas... 😂😮
  12. Not until tomorrow, though, by the look of it. The hosting company's status isn't promising for today. Meanwhile, Firefox still throws the usual message when I try to reach the LR site: Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead. :/
  13. Haha! Excellent topic. We're a two-bassists household, so we have a lot of bass gear! I can often be seen going around the house dusting those basses that are on stands, as opposed to in cases. Sometimes I wipe them down with a damp cloth, if they're particularly grubby! I include fingerboards and the 'underside' of the strings. I have a large makeup brush (I don't 'do' makeup, anyway) to dust pickups, bridges and headstock tuners. I keep an eye on the state of my basses' fingerboards and oil them when necessary, even if I'm not changing the strings. Same with cleaning the frets. On the basses I use most, I regularly check action/truss rod, saddle height, nut height (on the Warwicks) and intonation. I have been known to be OCD enough to tighten a tuner's screw if that tuner is slightly looser than the others. I have changed hardware on a couple of basses, and turned an electric upright from righty to lefty, but I don't feel confident enough to change pickups, or to do heavy duty cosmetic work such as sanding down the lacquer and changing the body colour. I'm @Happy Jack's strings and general setup tech... 😎
  14. Both hacking and a virus were mentioned in previous posts, but that message from Mac doesn't mention either. We have been assured that LR itself hasn't been hacked or infected.
  15. This is what has been discussed in various Facebook groups:
  16. Some opinions and recommendations in this thread.
  17. That's the point. I really loved your Wingbass when I saw it at the SE bash. If I end up buying one (they do lefties, yay!) it'll be for noodling and playing differently from the usual, not for holiday practice.
  18. Happy Jack and I had a chat about whether he preferred a Wingbass or a Snapdragon as a present. Nice as Wingbasses are, they don't seem to be designed to do the job of a normal bass - they are, so to speak, a standalone dusty end. They are obviously way more precious, higher quality and more expensive than the Snapdragon, but they don't cover the same ground. We decided that, for someone who wants to keep their fretting hand exercised on the basslines they play with their band (often mostly on the first 7/10 frets), the Wingbass is less useful than a longer scale bass - unless the person in question is a solo bass player, of course.
  19. Alternatively, a relatively cheap travel bass may be the answer. Having seen @MacDaddy's folding bass and guitar, I bought @Happy Jack one of these and he seems to like it too.
  20. Yes you're absolutely right, and I do wish they would get the lineup(s) sorted by the time the tix go on sale. The usual reasons quoted for the delay are that a. they want to keep the suspense going (does that mean they are mostly targeting local visitors as opposed to people like you?) and b. the artists especially are bloody difficult to pin down to attendance (perhaps the fee isn't enormous, and they get a lot of cancellations when the artist receives a better offer?) As I said, frustration shared, even if I live in London. I can choose to go to the LBGS with a press pass and work, or buy my own ticket and go as a visitor and have fun, so I'm in the same boat as you guys.
  21. While I do understand - and share - your frustration at not knowing exactly who's going to exhibit or perform, I can't think of any LBGS (or previous music show) I've ever been that I regretted buying a ticket for. Not a single one. Especially for less than £20 for the whole weekend. There are always one or more shops, luthiers, masterclasses or performances that make the day/weekend worth while.
  22. Have a look at this thread for some general opinions. I can't answer your question re active v. passive, as mine is passive only. Hopefully someone else can help.
  23. If the OP plays lefty, he may end up not finding a bass he can use unless he brings his own. Don't ask me how I know...
