Oooo that's a gap in the market someone could exploit! -
Spouses, do they like or hate your instruments?
Silvia Bluejay replied to Barking Spiders's topic in General Discussion
I would pick up my other half's basses and play them, but they're all right-handed, so I have my own instead, and that doubles the number of basses in the house. Wait till I find and buy a lefty double bass... At least we can share amps and cabs. -
Another updated list 1. Bassace. Bryant Solo DB, Felix preamp, Puma 500 amp, OneTen cab. Some 'fix your pickup jack to the tailpiece' devices 2. Happy Jack (TBC). Andreas Zeller DB and a KK BabyBass (plus, if I'm feeling mischievous, a Takamine TB20) 3. Bluejay (TBC). Cameras and video equipment 4. Owen. Late 19C Saxony DB with new 5 string neck,TC preamp/Berg IP310 or whatever I have by then. You know how it is. Howlett 5 string bass Uke. NS5 string EUB.German Carbon bow. 5. Neilp. 19th century unlabelled German bass, Meghan; it has acquired a beautiful Pete Barnaby mechanical C extension, and I've bought a Smooth hound wireless rig. 6. StingrayPete1977. Gedo DB half carved and stagg eub both with Spiro weichs. Yita carbon bow. 7. TheRev. East German ply workhorse with Krivo magnetic pickup, EA Doubler amp, Fishman Platinum Analogue pre and BigE/MAS45 double bass cab; I can also bring my other preamps (Fishman Plat Pro and Fdeck series 3) if anyone wants me to. 8. Sarah Thomas. German flat back, Kala UBass, Yita bow and AI combo. 9. TPJ. Duke ply strung with steels and a cheapo hybrid strung with Velvet Animas. Homemade "hang your bow from your pocket" device 10. AndyBass [?]. Left handed Duke or Strunal 50/4 11. invicta59 [?]. Zeller Bass, K&K pickup, GK amp and Fearless F112. Maybe also Tricky Audio 'Greenboy' cabs, and possibly a Tricky Audio builder (Guy)

That would be great, Andy! An absolute first! Happy to try at either of your DBs if you can make it, simply take the one that's more convenient. Should I end up owning a lefty DB in the future, I would probably go for the softest gut-like strings available, given my small, not very strong hands; then again, my uprights are strung with steels, so for the bash, either type would do.

Jack, the key was initially Emaj but we changed it to Ab min because it was too easy.

Excellent, thank you! I'll jot down a few newbie questions to ask for a start , and see where they take us. (I do have a cheap French bow which I've used on my uprights a few times, to get the feel, but I'm sure good ones will feel different!). I'm looking forward to the bash! and there will be photos and footage, of course!

Anything that suits you best! I'll be all ears (and eyes). Thanks

That's great, Neil. Incidentally, I'd love to know more about bowing (at least bows can be used with either hand with no modification!), so I may ask you a few questions while we are there. If anyone feels like sayng a few words about the basics of bowing, for instance, they'll have my eager attention.

My impression is that we are getting up to speed now, and deciding what to offer. As a lefty upright player who has never had the honour of seeing a lefty DB, let alone playing one, I'm not going to be able to play other people's instruments, but i'm looking forward to listening, learning about both acoustic and amplified playing, and soaking the atmosphere! I'm pretty sure there won't be any loud, mad slappers. (Anyone playing rockabilly, by the way? I discovered I like it a lot when I attended Lee Rocker's masterclass at the LBGS a couple of years ago.) We don't PM potential attendees for the other bashes; we tend to use PMs from organiser to organiser if there's anything to clarify before announcing it publicly, but most of the organisation is done on the relevant Events thread. The difference is that there are many more bass guitar players than double bass players on this forum, so the DB bash will be smaller; also, the most successful bashes tend to be the ones close to London, due to sheer numbers. Chris, I hope you will reconsider and come along. To the others who are planning to stay at home, please don't - come along too.

The Doors had former Elvis bassist Jerry Scheff on LA Woman and Roadhouse Blues IIRC.

Can we please reply and discuss on here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/283463-double-bass-bash-derby-oct-2nd/ I may lock this thread later, so as to avoid confusion.

The Junkyard Dogs (Happy Jack, MacDaddy, Paul the Drums)
Silvia Bluejay replied to Happy Jack's topic in Live photos & videos
Back home to the Chiswick Club Society last Saturday! https://flic.kr/s/aHskB4g8HV Walking in the audience while playing bass is cool, but does occasionally attract some unwanted attention... -
Time for a revival of this thread and a list of participants! Current state of play is the following - feel free to edit adding your name and gear you plan to bring. 1. Bassace. Bryant Solo DB, Felix preamp, Puma 500 amp, Crazy 8 or OneTen cab. 2. Happy Jack (TBC). Andreas Zeller DB and a KK BabyBass (plus, if I'm feeling mischievous, a Takamine TB20) 3. Bluejay (TBC). Cameras and video equipment; I can bring a lefty EUB if anyone remotely gives a damn about it, if not, I'll leave it at home 4. Owen 5. Neilp

For a professional there should be no difference in setting up a righty or a lefty. What I don't like in the setups offered by most specialists is that they will follow the book, so to speak, measuring distances and gaps and making them all standard according to "the rules". I don't know how many of us enjoy standard setups, but I know I certainly don't: for instance, I like the G string to have a much lower action than the other strings (makes it easier to play the high notes when I use my pinky). I like to adjust the action through lifting or lowering the saddles and the nut (Warwicks are way ahead of most other makes, in that they have adjustable ones) as well as through the usual truss rod tweaks. Some of the above would be anathema to a pro... I'm the official re-string/setup person in our lefty+righty household, and it makes no difference to how I work; however, I always do the final adjustments only after we have actually played the bass and decided if it still needs tweaking.

Whats the best way to promote a gig?
Silvia Bluejay replied to Pinball's topic in General Discussion
Agree with this. and become members of groups and post in those as well.
Especially the venues' own groups, as they will be frequented by many of their regulars. FB doesn't allow pages to post in groups, so an individual - band member or fan - has to do the posting. -
This is deadly serious stuff I'll have you know
It is indeed! I'm learning a lot from this thread.

Believe me, I'd better stick to (left-handed) bass and just to that, really...

You can use flyers in a targeted way, saving money and avoiding littering. We spread a handful of Junkyard Dogs flyers on tables when the band gigs a new or new-ish venue. They don't list any gigs, so they never expire, and instead they have all the links to the website, the social media and Lemonrock, and a QR code for reaching the website with your mobile phone at a stroke. -

Regarding Facebook, one way of extending the reach of the band's posts is to ask people to share them. For instance, ask all the band members to share the band page's posts on their own timelines. As mentioned above, that can also be achieved by tagging band members and friends, but I would be selective rather than indiscriminate, and tag only those friends and fans who aren't irritated by it and like sharing the band's news. -
LOL, subscribed - thank you Jack for pointing this thread out to me. Priceless
