Hi Roberto, and welcome to Basschat! I think that once you've tried a good fretless, you'll simply fall in love with it. They are obviously not suitable for [i]all[/i] kinds of music or songs, but they are unbeatable in the right place at the right time. I see you're based in Livorno - perhaps you could plan a reasonably quick trip to the Emporio Senese to try a few fretless models? Assuming the Emporio is still there, and they still sell basses? Haven't been there for a long time, but I remember it being a pretty large store with a decent selection at the time. Oh, and be ready to get lots more GAS while you're on this forum!

£120 lefty Warwick Rockbass Fretless 5 £80 Cruiser by Crafter, my first ever bass. Lovely shape, cool colour, pretty thick neck - when I moved on to my next bass, a Rockbass Corvette 4, its neck felt as thin as a pin in comparison.

No experience of playing Jazzes (I instantly hated all about the only lefty one I tried, except for its thin neck), but as far as Warwicks are concerned, I agree about the tendency to neck-dive. Having said that, Streamers are better than Corvettes, especially if you stick to 4 strings. And unlike the horrid, straight plank that's a Fender typical body, Streamers' bodies have a concave shape at the back, which many find very ergonomic (I'm not a fan, but that's just down to personal taste.) I would advise to try a Streamer or two in a shop, at a friendly local BCer or if you can make it to the South East Bash. Also important to check out the difference in sound with the Jazz.

I usually clean body, neck and fretboard with the Harley Benton spray I got from Thomann, and then lubricate the fingerboard with a little Fast Fret. I've done this for years and can see no damage, only improvement, but I'm sure someone will come along and state that I'm absolutely ruining my basses by doing that...

After all, if people keep reading the Basschat column from now on, at least it won't be because of the (rather superannuated)-girlie-with-a-bass pic. I can't say whether BC has gained any more members than it would have without the article, or if BGM has gained any extra subscribers, but neither was the aim of the exercise. What Joel wanted primarily was to strengthen the relationship between BC and BGM, and spread the word about both as widely as possible. That we are certainly achieving.
