1.
, my wrist hurts and my shoulder blades are killing, I think thats enough for today!
Please get yourself a couple of lessons before you do yourself some damage. And in the meantime, practice in 15 minutes bursts. Stop as soon as it hurts. Maybe the EUB isn't as potentially harmful as the acoustic, but it seems that the technique bass guitar players bring to the upright can cause problems. Keep your wrist straight!
2. I thought I'd been given soap instead of Danny, despite my husband sending the link to his mother, and her saying to him that she had got it. Then she said it was in with the soap, and sure enough, a slip case with the disc in was nestling in the discarded paper. Phew! And the soap's really nice too.
3. The strings have gone on Geraldine today and first impressions are pretty damn fine. They have a smooth feel with no stickiness - like silk under the fingers. The tension seems somewhere between Innovation Honeys and Spirocore mediums. They bow better than the Honeys but not quite as well as the Spirocores. And they look really cool. Black strings. Yeah.
4. Hooray! I have finally got my very own copy, even managed to get the family watching a bit of it on Christmas Day, but then Dr Who came on. So now on Boxing Day morn, while they all sleep off their hangovers and their snores rattle the foundations, I finally get to watch it. What a lovely man. It's made me look forward more than ever to his Double Bass Love-in, in March.
5. There's a lot of useful stuff here: http://dennishavlena.com/bassetup.htm with links to pictures too. Happy Christmas!
6. Wot, no jazz?
7. Great stuff and wonderful to hear of it. Thanks, Rob.
8. My bass went for a set-up (replace bridge, sound post and nut, smooth out bumps on fingerboard, fit good quality endpin and make the action jazz friendly) two months ago. I was told it would be ready at the end of the week - but not which week. However, in your case maybe it would be politic to go and see the work done so far and given the time frame, borrow a bass from the luthier which suits your needs better than the one you've got. Keep us posted!
9. It's a different picture - I'm glad I shrank it too, but only because I look very serious and rather unhappy. (nerves on first public performance) You can just see a blur of your mate Julian's hands on the djembe.
10. Ordered a new cable on Wednesday night and it arrived Friday afternoon. Very pleased with the service and with the cable. Cheers Dave and to Basschat members who know a good thing when they see one. Woohoo!
11. Maybe he'll bring a trial set or two to the double bass love in ...
12. Last year's Christmas pressie:
13. As a comparison, next year's jazz summer school at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama costs £595, including accommodation but excluding meals and drinks. And of course, they won't have Danny Thompson and it won't be focussed on the beautiful big double bass. No parking either, free or otherwise. Clarky - I'm longing to meet Boris Johnson with a bass. Do come! In fact, loads of us could go and finally have the big double bass bash that has been not happening for about five years ...
14. Here is the reply I had from Bree about the double bass love in - with the email address for a copy of the PDF which has more details about the course: Hi Sarah Thanks so much for getting in touch and we would love to have you there! I've attached a PDF with a bit more information but at this point, we're just getting an idea of how many people would be interested and then we can determine how much it will cost. If you need a rough estimate, we're looking at around £650 for the week, room, board and meals all included. In the mean time, if you have absolutely any questions at all specifically, please do let me know! 15. Cheers Clarky. I've sent an email as requested on the farcebook page and am eagerly waiting for a response. I am also waiting for my brother to return my call or answer my text. I am waiting for my luthier to finish working on my new to me bass and he is waiting for an endpin to arrive. I am waiting for my husband to return with beer (hooray) and of course, we are all waiting for christmas. For christmas, I would like to have some patience.
16. I'm going. I don't care what it costs (fingers crossed) and I don't care about work. It is unmissable.
17. 151 euros for a set of spirocores can't be bad (about £120 including postage to the UK). Knocks spots off the rest!
18. 'To charge 1k more than the estimate without consulting you is plain wrong.' I can see George's point to some extent, but this has not been addressed. To use George's analogy, if I took my car to my mechanic and he charged me £1,000 more than he had quoted without letting me know, then he would have to take me to court to get it. Furthermore, I would make sure all my friends and the local newspaper knew about it. As it is, he wouldn't dream of going £100 over, if that, without telephoning me for a go ahead. So what happened here?
19. Just to say I'm out of the running, having bought a flatback via Keith. Good luck with the sale though. It sounds like you'll win either way!
20. The strings arrived today - hooray! But alas, my bass is still with the luthier, who has had the flu. He said it would be ready by the end of the week, but didn't say which week ...
21. Crikey Daf, that's awful. £2,800 for a bass that's worse than when you left it with them ... You must be furious.
22. Hi Daf I'd love to try the ultra blacks please.
23. Given that Bilbo's post now runs to 31 pages and is running strong, could we have jazz bass as a sub-forum so that it's easy to find? Maybe on January 10 2013 as a special five year tribute to the strength and abiding interest of the original post?
24. What a fantastic clip - a masterclass in under five minutes! I'm watching it daily.
