Im not adverse to a Gibson i had a 1976 EB3 and a Gibson victory bass
much as i wanted to love the EB3 the neck dive on mine made it uncomfortable to play
i did buy a 2014 SG bass nice enough bass, but like others have said it doesnt have that sound ie Andy Fraser Jack Bruce
so sold it on
i liked the victory though it had that Gibson sound deep and plummy
im yet to try a gibson thunderbird or Rd artist, both basses i think i would probably like
and also they always seem well priced compared to vintage fenders
I have two 1997 BG basses a four and a five string both with emg pickups and schaller fittings
there very good basses and were pretty pricey when new, which makes them a real bargain nowadays if you can find them.
i remember going to my local pub and there was a covers combo there, a male and female, playing to a backing track.
the suprising part was the male chap was bass miming with a musicman stingray, bit ott for a pub i thought!
hi i bought a lodestone bass, which has ceramic saddles and one is broken i need to find a replacement
i dont mind if replacement is ceramic or metal i just need something that fits
if anyone could point me in the right direction, would be much appreciated.
does the neck look straight if you look down it?Normally i would just hold headstock into side of my face and look down the neck
if its straight or has a gentle curve that would be a good starting point
there isnt much point adjusting anything else till you know the neck is straight then you can adjust saddle etc adjust intonation.
i have a squier jaguar which i have a usa p pickup in and a entwistle jbxn http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/231141252091?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&var=530342071336&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
the bass has a active circuit but its very quiet and the pickups seem well matched,im unsure if the jbxn gives a traditional jazz bass tone though its pretty powerful.
i normally adjust neck till its quite straight, if there is buzzing on the first 3 frets on any of the strings thats normally a sign the neck is too straight so a little relief is needed.
then i lower the saddles until i have an action i like with no fret buzz.
yes it worth learning how to do it, i noticed in your other thread you mentioned you had a revelation jazz bass
i bought one of those, set it up, added a shim to the neck and i have to say its a great bass for the money
if your unsure, finding someone who could do a setup for you might be your best bet.
it makes all the difference to have a decent setup, can transform some instruments
you have to remember there are time constraints on factory setups so they arent always setup to optimum playability or to your own specific liking.
i once went to london guitar show in my youth, my two mates started getting excitable saying look theres wurzel! i turned round expecting to see wurzel maybe accompanied by aunt sally turns out it was the bloke from motorhead? i had no clue saxon where my favourite band back then
for me its jazz basses, love the look of them but could never get a sound i liked, although i now have a sire v7 and a bass centre stadium (MTD Grendel) that have jazz looks but they both have different sounds that work for me.
also had a G&L 2000 which looked amazing but just not my cup of tea
