If I was playing 4 stringers more often I think a pre EB Sabre would have to be added to the collection, what about a Classic series Sabre 5 String?!
Check this out http://www.alusonic.com/basso-in-alluminio-S-Special.html available as 5 string... I am seriously tempted!

Up for sale or trade is A01140, a beautiful 20th Anniversary StingRay, born on the 23rd of May in 1996. This is a rare model made by Ernie Ball to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of the StingRay bass in 1996. This StingRay unique features are an ash body with highly figured maple top, translucent red body back and wood body binding, back mounted electronics without front control plate, glued on tortoise shell pickguard, countersunk neck plate (like on the early Sterling models), 20th Anniversary Limited Edition silkscreen logo on the headstock and a birdseed maple neck with oil & wax finish. The instrument is in excellent almost like new condition with very little play wear. It has been played but very well cared for. There are a couple of small dings which are impossible to get shown on pictures. It's sounding great and is very comfortable to play. I've only played this bass in my smoke free living room and it has never been gigged. This is the second lightest StingRay I've come across, with a weight of only 3.97 kg (8.75lbs)!
With regards to the Sabre debate, now that they do Stingray HH models, there's not really much point, is there?...or is there more difference than I thought? Hopefully someone can enlighten me!
Thought the same before I was alble to play them. But they're quite different. Most obvious is that the Sabre was available with the 2 band preamp before the 3 band came out. Less obvious is that the pickups are not in the exact same spot, but IMO they're pretty similar so that the difference is not huge because of that (as opposed to the L2K which has PUs at complete different positions). However, the pickups themselves are different in that they are covered, smaller and the neck PU has not 8 but 16 pole pieces, and they are most probably not wound to the same specs. What I really like about the Sabre blade switching is that it is a cross over between the StingRay HH and StingRay HS: You get the following combinations: 1. neck S 2. neck S + bridge H 3. bridge H 4. neck H + bridge H 5. neck H These are all very usable and distinct sounds, with the position 2 probably being my favorite sound on the Sabre. The HS combo gives you the typical StingRay bridge H growl slightly smoothed out with a bigger bottom typical for the neck S plus and a rather peculiar metallic upper mid/treble edge which makes the bass stand out nicely even in a crowded mix of loud guitars, keys and drums. I would say that position 3 (single bridge H) is about the only position being similar to a modern StingRay, while all the others sound different. To my ears, the neck PU as single coils gets you into throaty P-bass territory while the neck PU as humbucker is very fat and round. What appeals to me (but probably turns off others) is that the Sabre keeps a certain metallic edge that brings out the ring of roundwounds in all settings. That combined with the elegant simplicity and effectivity of the 2 band EQ makes for a very nice all round bass full of character and attitude. IMO, a Classic Sabre would be a worthwhile addition to the EBMM line. But in the mean time I'm happy to have my vintage babies
I don't understand why they stopped the Sabre, that's ace!
Me neither. But as I understood from some hints on the EBMM forum, it was not exactly a successful product...
Hey Oli glad you made it to here. Beautiful basses man. Your Sabre looks almost new.
It has a good share of dings and dents... which are a tribute to its phantastic sound! I totally love that bass!
Bloody hell that '81 looks like it is in amazing condition?
That's true. Except for one single crack in the clear coat, which is only visible at certain angles, this StingRay looks almost like new. And the sound and playability are just unbelievable. I totally love that bass as well -
FYI, I just found t that I can send PMs just fine if I switch off JavaScript on the iPad.

Mobile site is working fine on the iPhone but can not be activated on the iPad. Yet, the iPad Safari has slight problems with pop up dialogs, e.g. for posting a PM, which unfortunately renders them useless. Would be nice if the forum could be switched to plain HTML regardless of thr browser or device using it. PS: I have to add the the design and usability is great otherwise. Maybe a plugin for ForumRunner or Talkatap would be helpful for monile devices.
