  1. So, do you think it's the MB200 built in chorus he used on that fretless sound? Seems very similar to me, although I've not had one for a few years.
  2. Interesting sofa - whats the scroll topped one?
  3. If he only made 10 a year or so (one man, little production line working) that makes a lot of sense, and the superstar clients must have spread his name in the pre-interweb world. Sort of where Carl Thompson's work would be if it wasn't for the web (and Claypool). Your comment about intonation doesn't surprise me - its an area where modern production instruments have probably improved a lot. I've got some hand-built instruments where you have accept a compromise...and it never seems to be quite right. Luckily its always in the higher dusty end, so it doesn't bother me. I'll have to have a look at that web page later, and go bass spotting!
  4. Yes, I can imagine that- I've owned one or two basses that you just didn't want to put down. For me it's a resonance thing, some instruments have a response that makes playing music a real pleasure.

  6. I liked the sound..can appreciate the aesthetic but I remain puzzled by the reverence collectors seem to have for these guitars. It seems odd to me that most other UK luthiers' work is very under valued (other than Wal?). V&R have an 80's Manson going for £800 - I know it's a collectors market, not a players...but still...
  7. Yep, that one! Its a Les Paul copy with a P bass pickup...but what a range of sounds!
  8. The VT DI is very tempting at that price...
  9. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9uafFaHEm_0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Not one you see very often...sounds great in the video. No doubt it will cost a fair bit, but I'm too scared to even look! Edit - techno failure..lookup Vintage and Rare's UTube channel. Or someone clever will probably fix the link....
  10. I borrowed a single pickup version many years ago - it was very nice, with no hint of the brittle/clacky edge some graphite basses have. Always nice to see unusual basses for sale - hope it goes to a good home.
  11. I've never been brave (or spendy) enough to try one...but from a lot of research the verdict seemed to be fantastic for front of house sound, but don't try and use it for stage monitoring...it only works in the very quietest of stage settings. I heard one a few months ago (folky acoustic duo) and it was great, but I have no idea how much of the house sound was the Fishman pickup and how much was DPA. If you get the chance to try to again, let us know how you get on?
  12. Jaco and Peavey...😳
  13. You can often see the date written on the transformer, or on an inspection label inside. Nice things these...I've used my Studio 220 a lot over the last ten years or so.
  14. Sorry to hear that...poor fella. Hope he gets back to it. Whatever you may think of his work, the world needs people like that.
  15. Nice...but too skint...any potential trade bait?
  16. Too late, but yes..of course.
  17. Thanks - I'll be having a think then....
  18. Whereabouts are you?
  19. Aguilar (old DB924) or current Tone Hammer or the Sadowsky - these really suit a J bass, without smothering the sound or trying to sound like an amp. Just your bass, but bigger.
  20. Roger Sadowsky is visiting the UK soon - worth a chat with his UK dealer and see what he can send over for bass chatters to buy? Levys are the best bags I've used...
  21. Levy's are great..but very hard to get in the UK (and then very expensive) one of mine came from walbassist (thank you!) and its been earning its keep for at least 5 years now! Its the posher version, but I would think the Sadowsky would be a very good bag with proper dense foam padding rather than the cosmetic stuff used in cheaper bags (Warwick being the worst I've seen).

    Ampeg SCR-DI

The first Ampeg product I'd think about buying....
